“How do you know?” she asked, nuzzling his strong neck, still holding the ring box that could, if she so desired, symbolize their future together. “How do you know it’s right?”
“You trust in your instincts, the same as you do when you’re a cop. I’ve loved you for a long time, Lea Cordasic. Sometimes, when you meet someone, you just know.”
Sometimes, you just know. Holding his solid, masculine body, breathing in his familiar scent, she reflected on the rightness of those words.
When she still didn’t speak, didn’t answer, he pulled back slightly and kissed the tip of her nose. “You hang on to the ring. You can give me your answer whenever you’re ready.”
Though his level tone sounded casual, she could see the hurt warring with love in his bright blue eyes.
Now that she’d put Feiney and that past behind her, hadn’t she decided that fear would rule her life no more? What was she afraid of, other than losing him?
Sometimes, you just know.
Suddenly, joy filled her. Pushing herself up on tiptoe, she planted a quick, breathless kiss on his mouth. Then, keeping her gaze locked on his, she carefully removed the ring from its plush nest and held out her hand.
“I would love to be your lifetime friend,” she said. “But I’d like you to put the ring on my finger.”
With one quick motion, he did. Then, his gaze searching hers, he pulled her closer. “Are you sure, sugar? I don’t want you to have any doubts.”
Pulling his face down until they were nose to nose, she looked into his blue, blue eyes and breathed his name through her parted lips. “Marc, I’ve never been more certain of anything in my entire life.”
He crushed her to him then, his kiss savage and tender, intoxicating and possessive. They were both breathing hard when he broke away, smiling.
With a dawning sense of wonder, she saw that joy had replaced the hurt she’d seen in his gaze. “I love you,” she told him.
“Not as much as I love you.”
“I beg to differ.”
One quick, hard kiss silenced her. “This argument could go on for the rest of our lives,” he said.
“I’d like that.”
Then, her hand held firmly in his, they went to tell her family the good news.
