“If I were you, I wouldn’t worry. There’s something much more important than that going on here. What happened tonight was a gift for each and every one of us. Anyway, you don’t have to give those kinds of gifts to feel good,” Carrie said, watching them humbly. The group smiled, and nodded in agreement with Carrie’s thoughts. “Know what?”
“What?” they all asked.
“I think you’re the best Christmas presents you could ever give each other,” Carrie said, watching them with joy. There was some slight chuckling from Amy, Jake, Chad and Francine after Carrie’s comment, and they looked lovingly at each other.
“You’re not off the mark,” Jake said, watching Amy, and hugging her after saying this. Amy gave him a wide smile, and surprised Jake with a peck on the cheek.
Chad and Francine also looked at each another, understanding that a new beginning was opening up for the both of them. They dreamily moved towards each other, and Francine looked at Chad deeply. Her green eyes were bright with wonder for the first occasion in a long time, and Chad nodded, smiling wistfully. They experienced an intense sense of relief now their games with Amy and Jake were over, and they could finally be honest about their feelings for each other, which were always around.
Carrie saw all her friends were at ease, and was satisfied with her accomplishments for the evening. She grinned cheekily at James, who did likewise. James stroked her hair with his hand, and she clutched his hand, holding it tightly.
“Don't think you’ve got anything to complain about, Carrie. Looks like you got what you wanted all along, and even more.”
Carrie attentively gazed at the Christmas tree, and was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the Christmas spirit. She knew that kindness, well-being, and above all, family and friends, was what it was all about.
“Yeah James, sure have. Yes, this really will be a Christmas to remember,” Carrie said merrily, embracing James.
