Night mechanically pulled the syringe out from his belt and moved around the side of the bed but before he could get to Mann a voice from the door stopped him in his tracks.
“Hold it right there.”
Night turned to see the smoldering features of Alexis looking at him from the doorway with a look of amusement and triumph in equal measure plastered across her luscious mouth and intense eyes.
“You won’t be needing that, you’ll find he has already left this place.”
Her voice was low, easy and she spoke softly as though she hadn’t a care in the world.
“Check him, quickly, my guard will realise I’m not in the reception’s toilet soon enough and may come here looking for me.”
Night moved across to Mann and looked at his body and from his new position was able to see that he had a needle sticking into his right arm and that he was indeed already departed - He had no pulse, no breath and Night could feel the cold emanating from the man’s once warm body.
“Overdose. His own fault. Seems that man had many enemies. Now I suggest you leave this place but before you do you will find something of interest in that briefcase.”
Alexis turned to leave.
“Who are you?”
The escort slowly turned to face Night once more.
“Someone you quite clearly are not. Do close the door behind you, Captain. I only left it open so that you would not incriminate yourself with that key you hold.”
Alexis turned gracefully on her heels and left with only the slightest wisp of sound.
Night moved quickly to the briefcase Alexis had pointed out to him, opened it and found a passport, cash and a single folder entitled Arosi, Night and Crew. He quickly flipped through the dossier finding names, addresses, news articles and photographs of everyone in the world Night cared about. He quickly tucked the folder into his belt under his cape and left the room, having carefully sealed the briefcase and making sure to leave nothing disturbed.
Night closed the hotel room door behind him with a small click and quickly made his way down the corridor before turning a corner and then finally walking the final passageway, which was now filled with excited Japanese tourists happily snapping photographs of a couple of particularly sexy anime characters, past the golden staircase and then out of the super-yacht hotel.
So relieved to be out of the hotel Night didn’t see the giant bodyguard standing with his back towards him and walked straight into the protector. The hired muscle turned and looked down at Night.
“Batman! So lucky, come come, get photograph with us also.”
Night had to contain his surprise at finding Le Roux standing next to the bodyguard and Alexis standing in front of the pair of men with a camera phone facing the entrance to the hotel.
“Come stand here, little Batman, now I have bad guy and good guy photograph!”
The next few moments passed for Michael Night like the blur of a dream as he stood and posed as Batman with his arch enemy The Penguin standing next to a multimillion dollar super yacht photographed by one of the most breathtakingly beautiful murderers Night had ever known. And then they were gone, the giant bodyguard once again leading the vixen away.
“Well fuck me that was surreal!”
“You can say that again, Freddie.”
“Well I’ll assume you did what you needed to do, I saw them coming back, heard her say that she had forgotten her purse in the bathroom, sounded like bullshit to me though, what prostitute would ever forget her money eh? Anyway turns out that big monkey is a fan of the Batman franchise.”
Le Roux turned to enter the hotel but Night took hold of his arm and led him away.
“What are you doing Night I have to get to the kitchen, you know that?”
“No need, Freddie. Now come on, I have a plane to catch.”
