  She snorted. “Does it matter?”

  “Not really. I’m just curious.”

  “I told him the truth.”

  “Which is?” he asked patiently.

“That I’m in love with you.”

He bent down and took her lips in a sweet kiss one last time.

  99 - 1468

The next few months passed quickly for Marin and his new wife. Moving to Famagusta, opening a house there, giving birth, embarking on a new career, and looking after three babies absorbed all of their time. They named the twins Alexandro, after Marin’s father, and Guglielmo, after Elena’s father, according to the custom of naming the children after their grandparents.

Marin’s business prospered, and soon he was able to buy his parents a vast estate about eighty kilometers southwest of Venice to encourage his father to retire. Marin and Elena had seven more children, five boys and two girls, one of which did not survive the great epidemic that broke out in 1470. A year later, one of the boys was lost in the catastrophic earthquake.

Andrea Cornaro’s endeavors finally paid off. Caterina Cornaro was married to James II by proxy, in 1468, in Venice. She arrived on the island four years later and was crowned Queen of Cyprus. Andrea came to Famagusta to pay Marin and his wife a visit and apologize to Elena who had just given birth to another healthy boy that they named Andrea after him. Andrea paid them a couple more visits before he was accused of poisoning the king and kidnapping his son on behalf of the Serenissima. Murdered in 1473, he never saw the flags of the Republic of San Marco rise in 1489, which signalized the abolition of the kingdom of Cyprus.
