But that wasn’t going to happen, at least not until the article was finished. Nothing was going to take away from it. She would write it as well as she could, and then she would tell Kylie. That moment couldn’t come soon enough.

“I do okay,” she said, still looking down. “I get lonely sometimes, but so does everyone.”

She was quite used to it by now. The last time she’d even come close to a relationship was during college. The woman, Pearl, had put her off dating for a long while. She’d been single for the past six years, only seeing people briefly and casually. She hadn’t met anybody who made her want to change that status… until now.

When she looked up, Kylie was nodding. “I know what you mean,” she said.

Starshine looked into her eyes, seeing understanding in those dark brown depths. “Well, it’s not a big deal.” She was surprised with herself for opening up. She hadn’t meant to talk about personal stuff.

“You can tell me about these things,” Kylie said. “It’s cool. I’m not one of those girls who has to pretend that everything is perfect all the time. I’m pretty blunt and honest, if you hadn’t noticed.”

“I did notice,” Starshine said, her hand itching to reach across for Kylie’s. “I like that about you.”

She pressed her lips together, aching to lean forward and press them against Kylie’s. Kylie was surprisingly sympathetic, and it only made Starshine like her more. She wanted to open up about other stuff, tell all her shit to Kylie. That would have been a terrible idea, of course.

She sighed. “We probably should head to the restaurant.”

  Seventeen

“You girls are late,” Paula said as Kylie and Starshine walked into the change room. It sounded like a casual, offhand comment.

Alyssa seemed unduly excited about the issue. “Late, late, late!” she said, jumping in their path and wagging her finger at them. “Don’t you take this job seriously at all?”

Kylie rolled her eyes. “Lay off it, A. You’re annoying.”

Instead of getting offended, Alyssa raised her eyebrows and planted her hands on her hips. “I might be annoying, but you two are late! Together! Where were you?”

Kylie glanced at Starshine, suddenly less eager to tell the girls about their hike. “Nowhere,” she said.

Kylie headed for her locker, and Starshine went to hers across the room. Alyssa looked from one to the other as if deciding which to follow, eventually standing next to Kylie. She was several inches shorter, which made her an irritating presence around the height of Kylie’s nose.

Alyssa continue to pester Kylie as she changed. “Where’s nowhere?”

“Fine, we went for a hike and got pizza.”

Now they had everyone’s attention. “A hike and pizza?” Alyssa asked. “That sounds… romantic.”

“You two have been hanging out a lot,” Chloe said softly.

“Have they?” Paula asked. “I didn’t notice.”

Chloe’s voice grew louder. “Yeah, they both skipped the party the other night.”

“And they’ve been talking a lot, sometimes outside,” Alyssa added. She clapped her hands together. “Romance is in the air!”

Kylie stared into her locker, looking at the pile of clothes and shoes. She wished she could see how Starshine looked right now. While she knew she wanted romance to be in the air, she needed to see Starshine’s reaction before she could comment.

“They’re totally seeing each other,” Paula said with amusement. “Kylie, wow, you move fast. She just had a break-up!”

“Nothing is happening between us, ladies,” Starshine said.

Something had happened… but Kylie had to go along with how Starshine wanted to portray this. If she didn’t want the others to know about their night together, that was fair. After all, they weren’t going to hook up again. It had been a one-time thing, and she had to stop hoping that it would lead to more.

She turned slowly, regretfully, and went along with Starshine’s story. “You have this all wrong. We’re friends, nothing more.”

“I don’t know about that,” Paula said. “Look at them. They look pretty guilty.”

Paula had always been the one to make the others settle down when they acted up. Now she was acting just as bad as the rest of them.

  “We’re not,” Kylie said.

“I’ve seen her looking at Starshine,” Alyssa said to Paula.

“Actually, I’ve seen Starshine looking at Kylie,” Paula responded.

Kylie grimaced, wishing they would all just cut it out. She definitely had given Starshine a glance or two over time. How could she not? And she wasn’t surprised that Starshine would have done the same to her. She already knew there was attraction there. But Starshine didn’t want this to go any further.

This could have been a happy moment for the two of them if they had been on their way to getting together, like they should have been. But they weren’t a couple, and they weren’t going to be. Their adventure today had been a platonic one.

Kylie slipped out of her skinny jeans and into her Jubblies shorts. “Everyone, I’m serious. Give it a rest. We’re friends, and that’s all. Just like we’re all friends with each other. If everybody in this place was dating their friends, well, it would be a little messier than it is now. We’re all proof that girls who like girls can still be friends with each other.”

She wasn’t sure if they would accept that as an answer, but fortunately the girls made no further protests after that. She supposed her voice had been serious enough to convince them. Although she was bending the truth a little, it was necessary. She wasn’t about to tell them about her unrequited feelings for Starshine.

“Are we done here? Because Paula, you’re dancing first, and the rest of you are going to be up after her. You better get out there and start working, or I’m going to take all your tips.”

Kylie pulled on her leather jacket as the rest of them reluctantly agreed. She could see that a lot of them were rooting for her and Starshine to get together.

After waiting tables for a while, Kylie went to the cleared-out area for her bad girl performance. She shimmied around with an easy, natural technique. The cheesiness of the routine was kind of fun.

She played up the routine as much as she could, and by the end of it, she was actually grinning. The claps and cheers gave her confidence. She scooped up her jacket, which she’d dropped to the floor, and went back into the change room to fix herself up.

Maybe she could have another chance to hook up with Starshine. She saw in Starshine’s eyes that she wanted her. They definitely did have sexual chemistry. Even the rest of the girls could see it.

Licking her lips, Kylie remembered the electricity that had sparked between them. That night had been so unbelievably erotic, like nothing she had experienced before. How could she stay away from that? Starshine could say no, but it was worth asking. If she said yes, it would be incredible.

Besides, maybe fooling around would lead to more. Kylie couldn’t help but hope this could be the start of something. If it was only one hook up, that was fine, but more would be even better. Kylie was into that girl in a serious kind of way.

And on top of everything, Kylie was still curious about Starshine. There were still so many strange things about her. Kylie hadn’t figured out what those texts were about, or the time she’d walked in on her on the phone, or the notebook in her room. Even today, when Starshine had seemed to open up, she’d been guarded.

So there were all sorts of reasons for Kylie to ask Starshine to hook up again. And as she walked into the change room, she saw Starshine there ahead of her.

  “Hey, S.”

Kylie was already a little turned on at the sight of Starshine in just her skimpy uniform and bandana. Her pirate outfit would come later. Kylie loved the sight of her in that loose white shirt.

“Hey, Kylie,” Starshine said. “I’m glad you’re here. I’m sorry I didn’t tell the others the whole truth today, but…”

; “No need to apologize,” Kylie said. “I didn’t expect you to tell them that we fooled around. It’s none of their business, and it’s… it’s not like we’re dating.”

“Exactly,” Starshine said. Her relief sounded forced. “I’m glad you understand. I was just a little worried that I would hurt your feelings or something.”

“My feeling aren’t that easily hurt,” Kylie said. For once, her lie came out smoothly. “I was thinking, though. We had some chemistry. It must be pretty obvious if all the other girls can see it.”

Starshine’s eyes widened, and her expression grew tight. She stood up from the bench and took a step away from Kylie. “What are you saying?”

“Nothing,” Kylie hurried to say. This was probably a horrible idea. But what did she have to lose? The potential reward was greater than any possible risk. “Just that if you ever wanted to do that again, well…”

Starshine’s expression was unreadable. “The option is open?”

Great, Kylie didn’t have to spell it out for her. “Exactly,” she said.

She waited, hopeful. If Starshine said yes, she would be the happiest person alive. She could practically feel Starshine’s skin against hers already. Her mouth watered as she thought of running her tongue over Starshine’s body again. The memory of how Starshine had bucked and moaned as she went down on her turned her on beyond all reason.

But after a long moment in which Starshine appeared to be debating with herself, she shook her head. “That wouldn’t be a good idea.”

Kylie stared into her eyes, and Starshine appeared to waver. Kylie stayed quiet, hoping that she would change her mind. Surely she could see that she and Kylie had a special connection. Even if she was still into her ex, she should be able to get over it and move on.

This Lindsay girl was in the past. Kylie was the future. They liked each other, so why not go for it? Kylie couldn’t think of anything or anyone she would want more than Starshine.

Starshine didn’t say anything to indicate that she had changed her mind, and after another far-too-long moment, Kylie had to accept that she wouldn’t. “I understand,” she muttered, looking at the ground.

  “Okay. See you later.”

Starshine headed out, and Kylie sank to the bench. Putting her head in her hands, she massaged her temples. This sucked, it fucking sucked, but she would be okay.

Hmm… At least she had one souvenir from the night they’d spent together. She perked up a little as she remembered the video they’d made. She hadn’t looked at it yet, and Starshine had said she could watch it before deleting it. She stood up, feeling slightly better. Watching it would be almost as good as the real thing. She could relive what they had done together.

For the rest of the night, her mind was on the video. Every time she glanced at Starshine, she could picture what she would look like on her phone screen. She went through the night on autopilot, only looking forward to getting home.

When she did finally reach her bedroom, the first thing she did was pull that phone out of her pocket. She slid onto her bed, not bothering to get under the covers. After navigating quickly to the gallery of her phone, she found the video within seconds.

Her throat went dry as she pressed the play button. This was going to be so hot. Kylie’s breath caught in her throat as Starshine’s face came into view. She watched as Starshine’s image took hold of her panties and eased her out of them. Kylie lay back and started to touch herself. She could remember every second of how this had felt.

She watched, even more turned on when she saw Starshine dip between her legs. She didn’t remember this exact moment, and assumed her eyes must have squeezed shut at this point. She could see everything she had missed, and this time she wouldn’t miss a thing.

The sound of her own sighs came through the speaker, and her current heavy breathing added to them. Hearing her own noises was a turn-on, but Starshine’s soft moans were even better. Starshine had definitely enjoyed going down on her. Even before receiving any pleasure of her own, Starshine had been so into pleasing Kylie. Why wouldn’t she do it again? Kylie forced herself to focus on the image on the screen instead of dwelling on that thought.

Kylie’s fingers moved up and down her clit, and she touched herself harder as she watched Starshine speed up. Her whole body ached, and she wondered if she would honestly never have this kind of pleasure again. She wanted Starshine desperately.

The tiny image wasn’t enough. She needed to feel Starshine’s mouth on her again. She longed to get naked with Starshine, to fuck her through the night and into the morning. She wanted Starshine’s clit under her tongue again. If she got half a chance, she would do absolutely everything with Starshine.

As she watched herself come, she almost let it happen again. But she held off, wanting to see the rest of the video. After all, the next part was going to be even hotter. She was going to see what she had done to Starshine. She took her hand away entirely, fearing that she would come as soon as she saw herself getting off.

“You’re driving me crazy. You’re going to make me come.”

“You’re going to come right now?”

  “Yes, I’m coming. I… you… I’m coming!”

The screen went black, and then the image became clear. She put her hand back gently as she watched Starshine take her place on the bed. Only the edge of her face was visible, and she could see most of Starshine’s upper body and her face. It came in and out of the frame as she moved, but it was always enough to get a good view of what had happened.

Kylie thanked the stars that she had made this video. She would have hated to lose this exceptional moment. She would definitely come back to this video again and again.

As she licked Starshine’s folds in the video, Starshine quivered and moaned. Kylie bit her lip hard, hoping the pain would hold her back from release. She wasn’t ready yet. She wanted to see this video through to the end. She’d let herself come when Starshine came.

Kylie caressed herself with a light touch, even though what she saw made her want to move hard and fast. Her image was gripping Starshine’s thighs, her fingers digging in until the skin reddened. She recalled at the time, her view had been of Starshine’s stomach rising and falling with ragged breaths.

Kylie bit her lip, unsure if she could really hold off until the end. This was just about the hottest thing she had ever seen. She had watched plenty of porn before, but this was completely different. She had never seen herself on camera before, not to mention the fact that Starshine was more appealing than any porn star. She had lived through this actual moment, and the memories were half of what was turning her on now.

She watched as Starshine’s hips started juddering. She hardly remembered this part, and yet there she was in the video, expertly hanging onto her. Starshine was going crazy then, and Kylie was going crazy now. She couldn’t believe how much she had turned Starshine on.

Starshine was so into this. Why, why, why wouldn’t she want to hook up again? How could anyone pass up something that felt so good? Had she forgotten how amazing it had been? Rebound or not, Kylie couldn’t see how something this hot was a bad thing.

Again, she pushed the thoughts out of her mind. It didn’t matter. Her clit was throbbing and the video was close to ending. She was going to come, and it was going to be big. She didn’t usually come that hard when she was alone, but this time she had been holding off for so long that the orgasm was going to be massive.

In the video, Starshine let out a howl, and in reality, Kylie gave up her attempt at holding back. She couldn’t suppress it anymore. The climax rippled through her, one wave after another bringing her to the point of pure ecstasy. The sound of Starshine’s moans accompanied her own release.

She came and came, prolonging the orgasm for longer than she would have thought possible. Starshine could turn her on so much without even being there. What would it be like if they actually got together again?

Kylie got under the sheets, unable to push the thoughts completely
out of her mind. She was supposed to delete that video now, but as she held her phone, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Her body was satisfied… but a sadness still hung over her.

  Eighteen

“Hey, Krista,” Starshine said, holding her phone to her shoulder as she stacked up the clean dishes. The pile of plates clattered as she put them in the cupboard.

Her kitchen was extremely clean now that she had spent the entire afternoon going through everything, dusting and washing and re-washing. After so much procrastination, she had finally called her boss to talk about her actual work.

The offer Kylie had made last night had been going through her mind all day. She had said no, but should she have? She knew it was the right decision, but was it the right one?

She wanted Kylie more than she thought possible, but she wasn’t going to rehash all the reasons that it couldn’t work. She simply had to accept it. The more she thought about this, the more frustrated she was going to be. It would be better to just focus on her article and put Kylie out of her mind entirely. Too bad the sexy waitress wouldn’t stay out of there.

“Hello, Stella. How’s the article coming?”

  “It’s coming along.”

“Good,” Krista said. “How are the other waitresses? You get a lot out of them?”

“Yes,” Starshine said. “I’ve been spending more time with one in particular, so I have a lot from her viewpoint.”

“Don’t be biased,” Krista said. “Try to keep an equal balance between all the different waitresses. Focus on yourself and your experience.”

  “Of course,” Starshine said.

“This person that you’ve been spending time with doesn’t suspect anything?” Krista asked.

“It’s fine. I’m keeping her at a distance now.”

  “Now? You didn’t before?”

  Starshine hesitated.

“Shit. What did you do, Stella?”

The way she said her name was accusatory. Starshine missed the way Kylie called her S. She liked that one letter better than either other name.
