  ABOUT THE DOGS

  MITCH, THE MARVELOUS MALINOIS

Mitch was found on the streets on Miami by ABMR (American Belgian Malinois Rescue) in October 2017. They guessed he was born sometime in July.

In November, he went to his foster home in Orlando. His foster mom is a police officer at the Orlando Airport and her K-9 is a bomb specialist.

Ann’s daughter saw Mitch online, and Ann Davis asked to adopt him, which resulted in an intense series of interviews and a home visit. Says Ann, “It was like I was adopting a child. They agreed to let us adopt Mitch and his gotcha day was officially February 2nd.”

MILO, QUEENIE, OSO, ACER, AND THE REST

Milo is modeled after my beloved Bailey. And, yes, he really was that elegant and tall. A wonder mutt, Bailey, for me, was extra special. I so wish he were still with me.

Queenie is based on an Irish Setter I inartfully nicknamed ‘Red’. She was a windfall who wound up going on to win all sorts of awards, both for her conformation—the judges drooled over her, in fact—and for her startling skills. This dog had a soul of boundless joy and was responsible for finding a lost six-year-old.

Oso, the Elkhound, was a dog I had as a kid, and, yes, I named him Oso, because he looked like a fuzzy bear. He wandered in one day in the middle of winter, starved and sick. We took him in …as we did all strays, got him the veterinary help he needed, nursed him back to health, and kept him. Ultimately, because he was an Elkhound, a breed known for their air scenting skills, he was responsible for finding people lost in an avalanche in our mountains during Christmas break one winter. His very best friend was Erasmus, the Philosopher Piglet, my pet piglet that grew into a thousand-pound Yorkshire boar. Their friendship lasted their lifetimes, the two of them dying within weeks of one another.

Acer, Britta, and Sumi are all based on various German Shepherds who I have known or who have been part of our family throughout my life. Within these novels, you’ll get to know them all and more, along with other notables …like Chauncey, the Briard …but that’s another story.

  ABOUT THIS SERIES

The Jessica Anderson K-9 Mysteries began life near the end of November 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic which reference I have purposely omitted from the stories, because, like all of us, I hope to put that behind me and begin, once more, to live a more normal life.

I have a series of books planned for Jessica and her dogs which I hope to write and release on a regular schedule for you (and me) to enjoy. And joy is, in fact, the main reason for writing them, for, while there is drama and trauma, there is a quintessential heroism in these marvelous animals. In writing these novels, I wanted to share that joy, inspiration, and unique richness that is a life with animals, specifically dogs, and of living in “God’s Country.”

Within this book and all the subsequent ones in the series, all the places and events, as well as all of the persons’ names, save one (with permission), are completely fictional. That said, though, the bases for the elements of the stories are very real and true to the land, the climate, and, most importantly, to the animals and people who call this great, but often misunderstood, part of rural America their home.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As an author who delights in writing stories that I myself would want to read, this is the first novel and series of novels that I’ve written under my real name. For decades, I’ve cloaked my identity under pen names, even once deciding to self-publish instead of continuing the traditional publishing route. Convinced to by another author who has become a close friend and writing confidante, I decided to unveil my identity and allow readers to connect me with some of my fiction work.

Writing is my passion. Though, among other things, I’m an artist and musician, writing novels is where I lose myself in The Zone, immersed for hours, even, days, into the worlds that birth themselves in my brain to emerge out my fingertips. May you enjoy the results of my creative travels as much as I.
