Dr Velascos' Unexpected Baby Page 18

He responded to her pat by leaning over and kissing her on the neck. “Well, maybe that, too! But that’s not what I really prefer to bask in. I have other favorites, if you’d like me to remind you.”

“It is good, isn’t it? I mean everything. Us, together. Our family. Friends. The clinic we’re building.” Named after her sister.

“It’s very good, Arabella. What’s also good is that it didn’t take me forever to convince you to marry me. Once Father Carlos convinced you that it was a very practical plan…”

  “Father Carlos?”

Grinning, Gabriel shrugged. “I suppose there were other factors. And it was practical.”

“There was nothing at all practical about it, Gabriel. In fact, it was more like…”

  “Catching a dream?”

“Or a miracle. Or both.” She’d become a believer. Rosie had taught her how. So had Gabriel. “You know, when I was going to find Ana Maria, I think that’s the first time I ever truly understood the kinds of amazing things people do for those they love. And it’s not really a sacrifice if you love them. I always thought Rosie sacrificed so much for me, but it’s what she wanted to do. Maybe even had to do. I didn’t understand that until I knew that there wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do to get Ana Maria back. So maybe the biggest miracle of all was realizing that when you love someone, you don’t think of it as a sacrifice or an inconvenience. Finding Ana Maria helped me find my sister and, more than that, helped me find things in myself I never knew were there.”

“I knew they were there. Anybody who knew you saw them, Arabella. When you were calling yourself selfish, what everybody else saw was selfless.”

“That’s being too generous. I still have so many things to deal with. So many feelings. Things to reconcile.” But they didn’t seem so big, or overwhelming, any more. There was still guilt to resolve, and she knew that in her down moments she might tend to revert back to the old Bella. But she had so much support now, people she loved, people she trusted. And she had Gabriel. That he believed in her made her almost believe she could believe that much in herself. It would be a slow process, but she trusted Gabriel when he promised she’d get there. For the first time in her life, she wanted to.

Life was good in a way she’d never believed she could have for herself. In a few short weeks Arabella Burke, lonely lady, had become Arabella Burke Velascos, married lady, with a baby. Be spontaneous, Bella. I know that goes against your nature, but be spontaneous with this change in plans. Step outside your normal self just this once. Have some fun. Who knows? Maybe something absolutely wonderful will happen when you least expect it.

“It did, Rosie,” she whispered. “It truly did.”
