  About the Author

  Malissa Smith first walked into the storied Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, New York, in January 1997. She has been boxing on and off ever since and maintains a popular blog about the sport—Girlboxing. Smith was awarded her master’s in liberal studies from SUNY Empire State College in March 2012. Her final thesis project, Boundaries in Motion: Women’s Boxing, discussed the complex relationship between gender and women’s boxing and was the genesis of A History of Women’s Boxing. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, with her family and writes frequently on the topic of women’s boxing.
