Four Reasons to Come Page 99

by Sarah J. Brooks

Liz could hardly hold back her excitement over seeing Harrison. As Bella and Ricardo joined her walking off the plane, Liz sent a text to Harrison to tell him they had just landed. Only a few more minutes and she would have her arms wrapped around him again.

“Hey, I need to use the restroom, wait for me,” Bella said as she walked off and left Ricardo and Liz standing there.

Bella was in the restroom for at least ten minutes and Liz was about to go after her when she finally reemerged. Liz was exhausted and just wanted to get back to her apartment and get some sleep.

“Did you fall in?” Liz joked as they all started walking toward the baggage claim area.

Liz looked back to see Bella whispering in Ricardo’s ear. Liz stopped and waited as the two of them continued on with a full whisper conversation.

“Oh, sorry Liz,” Bella said as she noticed Liz standing there waiting for them.

“It’s like you two are purposely want me not to see Harrison. Let’s go.” Liz kept moving down the escalator and toward the baggage claim area.

Liz looked back on the escalator and saw Bella and Ricardo making out as they moved down toward the baggage area. She stood there and waited for them to get done and continue walking.

  “Sorry, Liz,” Bella said again.

Liz continued walking down the long walkway toward the big open area by the baggage claim. This part of the terminal was huge and Liz looked around to try and find Harrison. He had said he would be by the baggage claim. But really there was like a dozen different baggage carousel areas.

“Do you know where Harrison is going to meet us at?” Liz said to Bella as they walked toward the open area in the middle.

“Bella, where is he meeting us?” Liz said again as she turned to look at Bella and Ricardo, who were probably making out again.

When Liz turned around Bella and Ricardo were not there. They had totally disappeared. Probably off to make out in a corner somewhere or something like that. Liz decided she would just have to meet up with them later. She was determined to find Harrison.

Liz sent him a text: “Where are you? I’m here.”

Harrison responded: “Be there in a second.”

Just as Liz read Harrison’s text, a homeless man walked right in front of her. She wouldn’t have thought it was odd except he was carrying a big boom box and people just didn’t carry those anymore. Especially men who were homeless.

His dirty trench coat was dark and hung down almost to the ground. His hair was messy, but his face was surprisingly clean. Liz watched as he walked right up to her and set the boom box down.

  She stopped.

What was he doing? Liz looked around again for Bella and Ricardo, but there were nowhere to be found. She took a step back and was about to walk around the man when he pressed play and looked up directly at Liz.

She couldn’t just leave now. Liz decided to stay for a minute and she would give him a tip if he were going to do some sort of trick. That was pretty common in New York and Liz liked helping out when she could.

The music started playing and Liz instantly knew the song. It was one of her favorite by Bruno Mars ‘Marry you’.

The homeless man started to sing the song. He was really good. Liz couldn’t believe how good he was. He stood there looking right into her eyes as he sang through the first chorus of the song.

  Then something amazing happened.

Liz saw three young women come in behind the man for the next part of the song and they started to dance and since with the song. The homeless man ripped off his coat and started to dance with the girls also.

As the song continued to play, Liz looked around again for Bella and Ricardo. She couldn’t believe they were missing this awesome street show. These people were really good. Liz looked through her purse for her wallet so she could find some money to give them. It was amazing how synchronized they were with each other. They really must have practiced a lot, she thought.

As the song continued to play, Liz saw a crowd starting to form around the group of performers. Liz looked at them and then back at the performers.

The song moved into the next verse and another group of people from the crowd joined in with the first three girls. Liz looked at the new group of about eight men and women and then back down at the boom box.

The song was at her favorite part, the chorus rang out, “It’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do…hey, baby, I think I wanna marry you.”

Wait a minute, what was going on here?

Liz looked around again for Bella and Ricardo. They were still nowhere to be found. Two of the dancers came up to Liz and grabbed her by the arms and led her toward the middle of the terminal. She looked around as everyone continued to dance.

  This was a flash mob!

Liz stopped and tried to take everything in. This was a flash mob for her? Why? What was going on?

  Chapter 9

By this time, the crowd around the dancers had grown very large. With twelve total dancers moving and dancing to Bruno Mars’ song, Liz finally started to understand what was going on.

The song went into the chorus again and a larger group of dancers from the crowd joined the dance. This time there had to have been at least thirty more dancers. Liz scanned this group of dancers and noticed Sarah was in there. What was Sarah doing there?

What was going on? Sarah, Harrison’s assistant, was dancing.

  Liz was in shock.

Then she noticed some of her friends from college were in this group. She couldn’t help but smile. This was crazy. All these people were here to dance for her. Harrison must have arranged this as a surprise. The song continued on and Liz saw Bella and Ricardo break through the crowd as they danced in unison with everyone else.

The crowd separated and on the other end of the terminal was Harrison.

Then it hit Liz. The song that was playing. The flash mob. This was because Harrison was going to propose. Tears started to flow uncontrollably and Liz covered her face in shock.

The dancers continued to dance in unison with the song as Harrison walked through them toward Liz. He was dressed in a tuxedo and her heart skipped a beat. She was already so excited to see him and now she could hardly stand her body was so overwhelmed with excitement.

His deep blue eyes wet with tears of his own as Harrison got closer and closer to Liz. He didn’t look away, not even for a second. His piercing gaze mesmerized Liz.

“Oh my gosh,” Liz said as loud as she could.

She really couldn’t believe this was happening. For so many years, Liz had been alone. She had wanted a forever family and found that in her relationship with Harrison and Bella. Liz couldn’t have even suspected that he was planning something like this. She didn’t know how he had pulled it off.

Suddenly it hit her. Liz looked over at Sarah dancing along with the other members of the flash mob. She looked around at the large crowd of people that were clapping and singing along. THIS is what Sarah meant when she said “Liz HNC.” Liz thought about it and laughed, Liz really did not have a clue at all about any of this.

Liz looked at Harrison as he got down on one knee. She wiped away her tears of joy as he grabbed her left hand.

“Elizabeth Cleveland, since you came into my life I haven’t been able to imagine mine without you. Will you marry me?”

He opened a small blue box that held a ring bigger and brighter than Liz could have ever dreamed of. Plus it was from the iconic store Tiffany’s, which Liz had always dreamed about getting a ring from.

“Yes!” Liz yelled over the music.

Harrison pulled the ring out of the box and slipped it onto Liz’s finger. He wrapped his arms around her and she wrapped hers around him. Harrison picked Liz up as he kissed her and twirled her around.

The entire crowd of dancers exploded into applause, so did the large group of onlookers who had been watching the whole scene unfold.

“I’m so glad you’re home,” Harrison said as he set L
iz down on the ground.

  “Me too.”

  Chapter 10

They planned their wedding quickly. Neither Harrison nor Liz wanted to wait around very long. Since the weather was nice they decided to have the wedding in Central Park. Not very many people were granted access to the park for a wedding. But Harrison wasn’t just any guy, his reputation as one of the top lawyers in the town often got them great seats and many other perks.

At the reception Harrison and Liz made their way around to each of their guest’s tables to thank them for coming and ask if they were having fun. It was a tedious task but one that was recommended in every wedding book Liz had read.

When they got to the bride’s maid table Liz and Bella started to giggle, scream and hug. It was hard for Harrison to decipher what was going on. But it would have been hard for any normal person to figure out what the two women had been laughing about.

As Liz and Harrison sat down Liz could feel the tension between Bella, Ricardo and Harrison.

“So what’s next for you guys?” Ricardo asked as he looked Harrison in the eyes.

Ricardo had some news of his own but he just didn’t feel ready to ask Harrison. It was a wedding and Ricardo thought that Harrison might freak out a little bit when Harrison heard the news Ricardo had to give to him.

“You’re next for the big wedding.” Liz joked with Bella.

“Actually we aren’t getting married anytime soon, but we did decide to go on a trip around the world.”

Liz instantly grabbed Harrison’s hand and help it tight. She knew this news would have Bella dropping out of school and that did not make Harrison happy. Liz didn’t want Harrison making a scene at their wedding and she held onto his hand until she felt like he had calmed down a little bit.

“Daddy isn’t that so exciting. We are going to travel around to everywhere and anywhere!” Bella said with a high level of excitement.

Bella’s excitement was so high that Liz thought there would be no way to convince Harrison that this was a good idea. Harrison already had it in his mind that he didn’t like Ricardo, this news obviously made those thoughts much worse.

Liz squeezed Harrison’s hand one more time as she stepped into the conversation.

“I think that’s an exciting idea. We can all help you prepare. How long will you be gone traveling?” Liz asked as she flipped through her online accounts.

“Yeah how long will you be gone? How will you pay for this extravagant adventure?” Harrison asked as he kept his composure and started to drill Ricardo with questions about his intensions with his daughter.

“We haven’t set a time yet, but we do have a plan to be gone for several months. We are preparing our things right now for our trip.”

  “Right now?” Harrison asked.

Liz decided she needed to get in the middle of this conversation. Obviously drunken Ricardo was not selling Harrison on anything about their trip. Liz couldn’t stand to just sit back and watch the conversation unfold.

“I want to make a toast,” Liz said as she started gently taping her wine glass with her knife from the plate she had been served for dinner.

Liz was not the type of girl who usually made toasts, but she decided she could make an exception since Liz wasn’t going to be doing this again any day soon.

“To life, love and adventure.” Liz lifted up her glass.

Harrison lifted up his glass too as he looked at Bella and Ricardo sitting next to each other and Ricardo leaning in to kiss Bella. Harrison didn’t know if he would ever be alright with a man kissing his daughter. And he certainly didn’t like Ricardo enough to want him around for any length of time. But Harrison wasn’t going to get onto his daughters bad side.

He raised his glass to participate in the toast. Harrison wanted to get this reception over with, he needed to get his woman back to their hotel room for the night.

They all raised their glass and looked at Harrison. It was official, Harrison was getting old. He looked at his daughter and her new boyfriend as he delivered his speech.

“Yes, to Life, love and adventure. I’d also like to toast to my beautiful bride who was crazy enough to let me come with her on her quest for adventure and sweet enough to share her love with me. Cheer Cheer.”
