Cooper grinned, his nervousness of moments ago dissolving as he interpreted the look on her face. He leaned forward, touched her face, and stared into her eyes.
“Devlin, Kam, and Bae have invited us to join them on the colony they’ve established on a planet not far from here.”
Del grabbed one of her hands in both of his. “I know there’s still more to be done, but we’ve done our part—for now at least. Isn’t it time we started living the free life we’ve fought so hard for?”
“Of course,” she said, not really surprised by Del’s wish to begin a new phase of his life. Ever since they’d defeated Keytark he’d been restless, unfocused, not quite himself. It had permeated every part of his life except this one. With his partners he was happier than Cooper and Avery had ever known him.
“So you wouldn’t mind retiring for a while, maybe starting a family?” Cooper asked.
“Family as in a baby or two?”
“Or four,” Del said with a grin.
“You’re okay with this?” As much as she wanted to, Avery couldn’t avoid the question. With Del being a Pendarian, all of the children she had would be Cooper’s, they’d be human, and Del would be giving up his chance to father children of his own.
“Avery,” Del said with a very serious look on his face. “I love you. I always have. It doesn’t matter who is the actual biological father of any children we have. It only matters that Cooper and I love you and love each other. Our children will be loved by both their fathers. Never doubt that.”
“I love you,” she said as tears filled her eyes and clogged her throat. “I love you both so much.”
“And we love you, too, Avery-girl,” Cooper said, his thumb smoothing the tears off her cheek. “Say yes. Come live with us and have our babies and celebrate the life together that we’ve always hoped for.”
“Yes, it’s definitely time to retire from life as a pirate,” she said, nodding frantically, her tears falling freely as she climbed off the bed and into Del’s lap. Cooper placed his arms around both of them, pressed a kiss to her temple and then one to Del’s mouth.
“We’ll always be pirates,” Cooper assured her with a soft laugh. “But for the next twenty years or so, how about you and I just restrict ourselves to being Del’s pirates?”
Del laughed, pressed a kiss to her forehead, and said, “Sounds pretty good to me.”
“Me, too,” she agreed with a soft laugh. “Me, too.”
