Chapter One
Varsha pulled her car into the valet parking line in front of one of San Francisco’s best hotels. Her sister and brother-in-law met a guy at their friend’s place and set her up on a blind date. She handed her keys to the valet attendant and adjusted her red-lace dress that skimmed her knees.
Her sister wasn’t entirely thrilled with her choice of outfit when she saw her earlier that day.
“This dress does not do justice to your rack.” Her sister looked unhappy.
“The dude is very smart, interesting, and good looking.” Her sister winked.
“Another reason I am going because I am intrigued by that combination and want to know if men can have all three qualities and not be cocky,” Varsha smirked.
Varsha agreed to meet the guy only because her sister thought he was perfect for her. The first time she was set up on a date, her date picked her up, and she realized how big a mistake it was. She drove to this one after that experience. She offered to meet the guy at a lounge on the top floor of the hotel where he was staying so he could catch his early-morning flight out of the country.
Varsha smiled remembering her sister’s remark about her date leaving the following day on a two-month trip.
“This is your opportunity Varsha. This dude is going away on some highly confidential government mission and will be off the grid for almost two months,” her sister giggled.
“So?” Varsha retorted grabbing her car keys.
“This is your chance to fudge and forget.” Her sister was out of control, but she meant well.
Varsha was not ready for the dating game yet, but her sister insisted she give the male clan another chance. The last couple of times she dated, she ended up making excuses and left hastily.
She walked through the extravagant lobby, her heels with soles the color of her scarlet dress, clicking on the marble floor turning heads as she made her way to the bank of elevators at the end of the hallway. She stepped into the elevator telling herself that she would be polite, make conversation, and leave graciously.
Kris sat on the bar stool at the circular granite bar waiting for her. It was thirty minutes ago he had gotten a call from his buddy, Sam, who was supposed to meet a woman on a blind date. The woman was on her way to San Francisco, something came up that he couldn’t make it, and it was too rude to cancel at the very last minute. Sam’s ex had called him and wanted to see him before he left the following day.
Sam literally begged Kris to show up at the bar to talk to the woman and be social so he wouldn’t get into trouble with his colleague and friend. He had told Kris the woman had been through a bad divorce and had a baby. She was getting back into dating, and Sam didn’t want to be the reason for her to go back into the cave.
Kris was not in the mood to spend the evening with some random woman when he knew she was not his type if she was set up for Sam. He had no interest in women who had baggage, let alone a single mother, but he told himself he would endure it for a maximum of an hour for Sam’s sake.
He flew in from New York on business a few days ago and took the opportunity to see Sam before he went on his secret mission and was heading back the following morning. Sam and he went to engineering school together and were best buds in spite of their varied tastes.
“Are you my date?” A modulated voice cut through his thoughts.
He turned around to look into beautifully shaped brown eyes that bore into his with confidence. The woman was clad in a hot red dress that was filled to shapely perfection.
“I will say yes, even if I am not your date…,” Kris managed to say coolly as he struggled to find his voice, a novel feeling.
The woman chuckled looking into his eyes, the sound of pure joy awakening something deep inside him. She had an aura about her, and the casual smile showed off a cool exterior while her eyes said something else. Kris was sure this woman was not Sam’s date.
“If you are the guy that is disappearing tomorrow morning on a secret mission, you definitely are my date,” she smiled, sending jolts of electricity through him.
“No one warned me you’d be this beautiful.” He knew he had to thank Sam for sending him to meet this woman. Her whole demeanor screamed ‘untouched’, and he couldn’t wait to peel off all her protective layers to ravish her sweetness until he claimed her completely.
Varsha could not digest the fact that her date was the hottest guy she had ever met. She wondered why her sister had not used the words ‘scorching’ or ‘wild’ to describe him. The man who looked at her with his eyes piercing into hers was a beast, a delectable one.
He was as feral as any woman would want a man to be with a well-trimmed beard that added a mysterious element to his look. His dark hair was long and looked stylishly unkept. When he stood up smiling at her, she knew instantly that her high heels on top of her five-foot-eight frame could not intimidate him. She looked up into eyes that spoke to her and told her they wanted her. Lust had no boundaries, and she reasoned with her pragmatic mind that it was not wrong to find a man attractive as soon as she clapped eyes on him.
“Hi…I’m Lisa,” she blurted, not wanting to give out her real name. The man who stood magnificently in front of her was bad news. She fisted one sweaty palm to stop herself from running her fingertips in his beard and held her hand out.
“I’m Kris. Nice to meet you.” He took in the softness of her palm and the firmness in her grip as he shook her hand and wondered how her palm would feel around the throbbing in his jeans.
“Sorry, I got held up at the valet parking line,” she smiled sheepishly as he guided her towards a mini-couch next to the glass wall that showed off the San Francisco skyline.
“Totally worth the wait,” he declared huskily.
Varsha caught her breath at the open admiration but steadied herself as she sunk into the comfortable leather couch. He sat just a foot away leaning forward looking at her with his gorgeous dark eyes and a rakish smile. She couldn’t figure out why he was coming on so strong when her sister had told her that the guy was shy and needed some probing.
“Are you excited about your trip?” Varsha chirped in an attempt to shake off the impending sexual tension.
“Not any more, I don’t want to go now,” he winked and looked at the waitress who approached them.
Kris had not expected Sam’s date would turn out to be a firecracker. His friend’s choice of women was always questionable, but whoever set him up with this woman was doing him a huge favor. He was glad he showed up to meet her and was thrilled she was with him.
He was aware of her eyes on him as he spoke to the waitress. She had her dark hair pulled into a classic bun and all he could think about was how it would feel to run his fingers through her dark hair.
She watched him order their drinks taking in the manly charisma that almost made her stutter. She remembered being told that he was some kind of a scientist working on high-profile government projects, and she wondered if he was in the Army or Navy. There was no other explanation to the rugged build and the rough exterior that seemed indestructible. She had a big frame for her size, her broad shoulders, wide hips, and long legs made
her seem taller than she was but with the guy sitting next to her, she felt fragile.
“Where are you from?” he asked scanning her face unable to take his eyes away from her perfectly full lips.
“Originally from India,” she smiled wondering why he would ask her about her origin.
“Lisa is an interesting name for someone from India,” he observed huskily, and she knew she had to be cautious not to give out too much information about herself.
“You should talk to my parents about that,” she smiled hoping for a shift in the conversation. She didn’t want to know anything about him, knowing more meant more opportunity to get hooked on him.
“What’s your story?” she asked when Kris continued to look at her in silence.
“What do you wanna know?” he teased.
“I…I wanna know about your secret government mission,” she teased.
Something inside him twitched when he realized that he hadn’t told her Sam couldn’t make it like he had planned.
“Absolutely!! The mission is all about the very highly confidential stuff we do, and it is such a huge secret that no one knows about everything that is done and who does what,” he said, satire weighing down his words.
“Not cool, you could have just said you couldn’t talk about it or made up a juicy story that I sure would have believed,” she mocked.
“What do you do?” he asked softly, unable to contain the questions that lined up in his head. He wanted to know everything about her. He wanted her butt naked on a platter after she told him everything about her.
“Nothing as highly confidential as your stuff,” she said smugly.
“I am sure it’s very interesting,” he leaned in closer.
His musky cologne tickled her nose, and she felt the raw masculinity his body emitted and felt her body being pulled by the sheer magnetism. She felt a twitch between her legs as her inner folds responded to the pull.
She was tempted to pull off her ‘I need to go’ card before she got into a deeper conversation, but she could not get herself to do it. She told herself that her drinks had to wear off before she could start driving back home.
“I love the view from here. Thanks for picking this location,” she said taking a sip of her red wine.
That bastard Sam, Kris thought and realized how everything was aligned for Sam to have this woman in his life, but he was glad his buddy’s ex had called him. He was stung with jealousy just at the thought of Sam going on this date with Lisa.
“Do you not live here?” he asked looking at her. She smiled, shaking her head swallowing her drink.
She was more intoxicating than the drink he had in his hands. The red dress that showed off her curves did a good job of hiding her hardened peaks. Kris looked at the delicious mounds of flesh and knew instantly she was attracted to him. He knew he needed to move fast or the night would melt away before he knew it.
“I work here but live down south,” Varsha said softly. She bit her lip when she realized she was giving out too much information. He was handsome, smooth, and definitely a womanizer. She was positive he had broken a string of hearts along the way, and she had no interest in being one of those women.
Varsha kept wondering why a guy like Kris needed to be set up on a blind date. He was mid sentence when she interrupted him and asked him why he needed help with a date.
“I didn't ask for help, it just happened.” He shrugged and winked at her. “What about you?”
“Well, I was questioning my faith in relationships and needed the intervention,” she pouted.
“I am glad someone knocked some sense into you.” He laughed.
“Hey...” she objected, and he laughed tilting his head back cutting through her annoyance.
“You do react. I wondered if you were always this poised or you actually let go.” His voice was satirical, but she knew there was an underlying theme.
“Are you calling me a stuck up?”
“You said that, I didn't.” He chuckled.
She took a sip of her wine and shook her head.
“Do you react when things happen?” he asked softly.
“What does that mean?” She raised her eyebrow.
She watched his palm go to her cheek and lowered her gaze having a tough time containing her raging heart. His hand went past her cheek and reached behind her ear and then she felt his fingertips in her hair. She sucked in a breath of air when she felt her hair fall loosely on her shoulders. She was surprised and annoyed at the same time when he pulled out the clip that held her hair up and shot out a glare.
“That's hot, I am glad you don't have special laser powers,” he mocked.
“Whatever,” she snapped.
“That's cute. Were you a spoiled brat when you were little?”
“I wasn't. I've always been a good girl.”
“Time to be a bad girl. Good girls don't know how to have fun,” he said twirling the tip of his index finger on the back of her hand.
A jolt of energy ripped through her body, and she wondered if she was overreacting to a silly comment and a gentle contact.
“What do you suggest I do to have fun?” she challenged, mockery brimming in her eyes.
“Dance with me,” he urged.
“I don't dance with strangers,” she retorted enjoying the banter.
“Go on another date with me, and I won't be a stranger,” he fired back.
“Not happening.” She shook her head laughing.
“Why not?” He was enjoying her company without thinking about what he was going to do to her naked body.
“A secret government mission, so secret you can’t talk about,” she teased.
Kris stumbled for a fraction of a second as he wondered if he should tell her Sam was the one leaving the following day for the project. He couldn't get himself to tell her, he was having a great time and no matter how many lies it took, he didn't want the night to end.
He looked into her eyes and said, “I will cancel my travel if you agree to go on a date.”
Her breath got trapped in her throat with the intensity in his tone.
“I can't…I’m not ready for this. I have too much fun going on in my life,” she declined politely.
“Please let me in on the fun, I’d like to be part of it.”
“You're trouble,” she snorted.
He laughed, easing the lump that had formed in her throat. “Depends on what kind of trouble you are looking for.” He smirked.
“I've had my share of trouble so I am good, and you shouldn't be ditching your plans for me anyway,” she said softly.
“I would ditch anything for you,” he declared.
His words rippled through her entirety making her feel sensations she had never felt for a man during her first meeting. She smiled, ignoring his comment and not wanting to respond for the sake of responding.
“We should take a walk,” he blurted, unable to contain his impatience. She smiled raising an eyebrow as if questioning his motive.
“This hotel has a roof-top garden with a small bar, and I‘m sure you’ll get an unobstructed view from up there, and I will get my fresh air,” he clarified, and she complied enjoying the attention he was giving her.
She stood up and took one step toward him, and that’s the opportunity he was waiting for. He let his shoulder rub against hers as he took her hand in his. He held it firmly as he led her out of the lounge.
Varsha’s heart started a rampage against her rib cage, and she shuddered when her body came in contact with his well-built structure. A tremble ran through her making her wonder why she was reacting that way with such slight contact. She lifted her eyelashes to look at the man leading her not caring as to where he was taking her. She inadvertently dug her fingertips into the side of his palm feeling the tension growing between them.
“Last call is in five minutes. Can I get you something to drink,” the friendly waitress interrupted Kris and Varsha as they sat under the heat lamp chatting endlessly.
“What time is it?” Varsha stumbled.
“It’s 11:40. Can I get you guys something to drink?” the waitress repeated when she found Kris and Varsha looking at each other in disbelief.
“We are good for tonight,“ Kris managed to say peeling his eyes away from the woman who sat a few feet from him wrapped in a woolen blanket. She had kicked off her fancy heels and had her feet on the plush chair. He could not believe he had not met anyone like her before and could not believe her passion for sports, fast cars, and technology. He was so close to telling her he wasn’t the guy she was supposed to meet but as they conversed, he just couldn’t get himself to tell her.
“I can’t believe we spent three hours talking about—about everything, I guess,” she laughed taking a sip of her wine and added, “you have an early flight to catch, and I have an hour drive. I think we should call it a night.”
“Don’t worry about me. It’s not midnight yet, and I am sure we can hang out here for a little longer,” he urged flashing a gorgeous smile her way.
“I can only stay until midnight,” she declared looking at her phone.
“I will take you home if your car turns into a pumpkin,” Kris said flatly and enjoyed the chuckle that escaped her.
“I want to see you tomorrow,” Kris blurted finally unable to contain his urge to not let her go. He wanted to know more about her and knew she was capable of surprising him every step of the way. She was smart and was one bullhead that made her all the more irresistible.
“Not happening, wasn’t part of the deal,” she laughed, trying to ease the intensity in his stare.
“What’s stopping you?”
“Dude, you won’t be here,” she laughed shaking her head.
“Can I see you if I am here?”
“Kris—I had a great time tonight, but I don’t want you to change your plans.” She smiled making him more resolute to keep her.
“If you had a great time, what’s stopping you?”
“I’ve got too much going on, and I’m not sure if you want a piece of that,” she said looking down twirling the leftover wine in her glass.
