A Reckless Night

“I don’t get it, Kris. It is an up-hill battle talking to these people, and you don’t need to give them anything. They can ask me however many times they want, but I am not going back.”

Her father chuckled shaking his head. “What’s so funny dad?” Varsha was close to losing it.

“Do you think businesses in India are like selling security software?” Her dad was mocking Kris, and she could not handle it any more.

“Ma and Daddy, please leave. This conversation is over.”

“Varsha, hold on. What will it take for you to stop tormenting your daughter to go back to a marriage that doesn’t and never existed?”

“Will you be able to give me a contract worth 150 million dollars?” her dad mocked.

“I can if I want to.”

“Is this some kind of a joke?” her dad stood up gesturing her mom to leave.

“I am the Vice President of the Vardhan Group of companies and yes, I am willing to give you a contract if that puts an end to this madness,” Kris declared. His grandfather was one of the first automobile engineers who acquired a license to manufacture cars in India. His father continued his legacy after he moved back, and Kris was ready to take on the reigns of the multi-national group of companies.

“What?” her dad asked looking at him in disbelief.

“My name is Krishna Vardhan Vaasireddy, and I am the future president of the organization.” Kris tried real hard not to introduce himself to Varsha’s father associated with a multibillion-dollar company but as a man who loved their daughter.

She saw the blood drain out of her father’s face and wondered what the big deal was with Kris’s family.

“But you said you sell computer stuff,” her dad said in disbelief.

“That’s what I built myself, and I don’t rely on my inheritance.”

Every person in the room looked at Kris in silence and finally her mom spoke up. “Is that baby your sister’s baby?” Varsha was surprised her mom was able to figure it out and realized Kris’s family had to be pretty well known for her mom to know and care about what happened.

“She is our daughter.” Kris put his arm around Varsha pulling her close to him.

“We need to go,” her dad said moving towards the main entrance.

“Please stay for dinner, we may have our differences but we are still family,” Kris said surprising everyone.

Varsha was in the bathroom later that night brushing her teeth when she heard Kris call out to her. She could not believe the events that occurred earlier that evening and was still processing everything.

She mumbled her response when he called out again.

“I was brushing my teeth, why are you so impatient?” She mocked getting into bed next to him.

“I didn’t really need anything. I just wanted to say your name out loud,” he teased leaning to his side to put his head in her lap as she sat with her back propped against the headboard.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the automobile company your family owns? You know I would have loved a tour of the manufacturing plant,” she teased.

“Something my grandpa and dad built. I can’t take credit for it, but I have the responsibility to take care of it.” He chuckled and added, “and for the tour, it’s gonna cost you dearly for one.”

“I know how to make you take me on that tour,” she retorted playfully.

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out.”

“Ohh… and did you know why my parents were visiting us?”

“Yes, I did.” He ran his fingers through her hair.

  “Why didn’t you say something?”

“I didn’t want to assume that was the only reason they were visiting.”

“Unfortunately, that was their only reason. Meena and I wonder if we were adopted.”

He laughed burying his face into her belly. She held his head to him running her fingers through his hair.

“How did you know they were part of Plan B?”

He mumbled against the cotton fabric of her sleep shirt and took a bite of her belly. She squealed in surprise pushing him away, glaring at him.

“Do we really need to talk about it now?” he asked laughing at her expression.

  “Fine, we don’t have to.”

“I have something I need to ask you.”

“What?” She looked at him as he sat up and reached for the end table.

“I don’t need another ring, Kris. I will marry you,” she teased.

He pulled an envelope out of the end table and handed it to her. “Adoption papers. Think before you sign them.”

“Kris, Nikki has been mine since the day I laid my eyes on her.” She pulled the documents out of the envelope and flipped through the sheets. She stopped on a sheet where she saw Rahul’s name and signature.

“Why is Rahul’s name on Nikki’s adoption papers?” She was confused.

“These are the adoption papers for both kids. You get Nikki and if you agree to sign there, Myra becomes mine.”

She smiled; her eyes dancing at him and his breath got trapped in his throat. His body responded to the joy on her face. “Yes, I can’t believe this.” She was ecstatic.

“Will you let me be the father of our children?”

“Oh my gawd, what kind of a silly question is that? Yes, yes, and I am the mommy.”

  “You are one hot mama!!”

“Thank you, Kris. Thank you for everything.”

  “I love you, sweetheart.”

His lips found hers for a slow and sensual kiss, his tongue exploring her mouth like the world had stopped spinning and time stopped for them. He took his lips to the corner of her eyes to wipe off the moisture that gathered and whispered in her ear, making her shudder, “You are the best thing that happened to me, I will never give up on you.”

She gasped as his lips claimed hers with more demand and a primitive need, and she swallowed against his mouth taking in the mind-numbing kiss she knew would lead to an explosion of her senses well into the wee morning hours.

  Epilogue

  One year later…

“I was only kidding when I said you need to have more kids,” Meena teased looking at Varsha run her palm over her baby bump.

“I knew that Meena.” She laughed looking at the kids play in the backyard with their dads.

“Two girls, two boys, and two more to be added to the chaos?” Meena said almost in disbelief.

“I didn’t see the twins coming,” she said smiling at Meena.

“I’m excited and terrified for you. What if you have two more girls?”

“We’ll be fine, Meena. Kris is the one who needs to figure out how to deal with all the women in the house.”

“Do you think you’ll go back to work again?”

“I don’t want to. I love being at home so much I can’t think of leaving the kids.”

“I’m excited to hang out with you when all your kids are in school,” her sister cheered.

She laughed. “Long way to go, but I’m sure it’ll be fun.”

“I love what you’ve done with the house, rather your houses.”

“We need all the extra room now.” They had done a major renovation on their townhouses by breaking down the wall on the upper floor to combine the townhomes into one massive house. They carved out a portion of the townhouse for her nanny’s family. She had moved into the lower half of the house that was segregated for her nanny’s family. The nanny agreed to the sweet deal of never having to pay for rent as long as she worked at their place while getting her regular salary.

“Hold on to your nanny,” Meena advised.

“I know. I try to give her the weekend off, but she feels obligated to cook and clean every day.”

“She is a godsend, Varsha, just for you.”

  “I know.”

“Are you guys considering moving to India since Kris is going to be the president of the family-owned companies?”

“No. He might make a few trips. He is looking to hire a
CEO he can trust to take care of the business so he can manage from here.”

“Thank you. I was worried you would move back.”

“I can’t leave you Meena. What would I do without your food?” she teased.

“You are the best sister anyone can have.”

“You are my mom and dad, Meena.”

“Stop saying things like that, you’ll ruin my mascara.”

  “Trying out some makeup finally?”

“I had to, my eyes looked weird on camera in my cooking videos.”

“Nice going, sis. I am so proud of you.”

“I got a comment from mom on one of my videos the other day.”

  “Finally!!”

“I guess we weren’t adopted after all.” She laughed.

“Mom and dad came to meet Kris when he was in India last month and were very apologetic.”

“Hey…where’s my apology call?” Meena grumbled.

“Well, you guys are even, they set you up to get married with someone you didn’t like and you eloped for someone you liked.”

“I guess so. Do they know about Rahul?” Meena asked, and she nodded in response. Rahul announced to his family about how he had been living a lie all his life and got back with Rohan. Rohan moved to India for good to be with Rahul.

“I’m so glad Kris showed up instead of Sam that night.” Her sister looked at Kris holding Myra and Nikki in his arms.

“Yeah…and I’m glad he came looking for me.” She felt blessed and thanked her stars every opportunity she got.

“What time are you going out?”

“I’ll leave after the girls are fed, and once Kris gives me a thumbs up he is cool.”

“It’s not like it’s the first time he is watching the kids,” Meena observed.

“Yes, but this night out with my friends is very special.”

  “Why is that?”

“I haven’t told them yet!!” she squeaked with excitement.

“Didn’t you see them a few weeks ago?”

“Yes, but my belly wasn’t visible then.” She winked.

“Four out of the six girlfriends are expecting babies. You are really having kids at the same time?” Meena got excited.

“I know, and I suspect the other gals are getting busy.” She giggled.

“You kept your promise, that’s amazing.”

  “I feel blessed, Meena.”

Later that night, she pulled into the garage after a fun night out with her friends. She stepped out smiling to herself remembering her friends’ expressions when she announced they were expecting twins.

“You had fun?” Kris was standing by the garage door smiling at her.

“I did, and the gang went crazy when I told them about the twins.” She took his hand as she gingerly went up the small flight of stairs.

“I missed you.” She put her arm around his waist and planted a kiss on his cheek.

“I don’t believe you. I doubt if you girls think about your spouses when you get together,” he teased.

“That’s not true.” She objected as he nuzzled her neck running his palm on her rounded belly.

“I can’t wait for the twins.”

“My friends think we are nuts to have four kids.”

“Yeah…nuts about each other,” he laughed.

She turned to face him. “If one of the twins is a girl, I want her name to be Seema.”

He looked at her in disbelief. “I know how much you miss your sister.”

He kissed her forehead, his heart beating for the mother of his children. “Why don’t you go get ready for bed? I will see you in a few minutes.”

Almost fifteen minutes later, Kris showed up in the bedroom with a grin on his face.

  “Someone’s happy.”

  “Your husband is very happy.”

“Why is my husband so happy?”

“I found the CEO I’ve been looking for.”

  “That’s great!! Congratulations!!”

“Aren’t you going to ask me who it is?” he mocked.

  “Do I know the person?”

  “Very well.”

“Who is it?” She asked unable to contain her excitement.

  “Kevin.”

  “What? My Kevin?” she squealed.

  “Yes, your Kevin,” he teased.

“That idiot!! He didn’t say a thing to me about this,” she growled.

“He wasn’t entirely sure until tonight. I think he wanted to make sure this is what he wanted before he moved to India. You need to cut him some slack,” Kris reasoned.

“What? He is moving to India?”

“Sweetheart, I need him there so I don’t need to go there every month.”

“No, why can’t he work from here?” She knew it wasn’t possible, but she couldn’t digest the fact that Kevin was going to move to India.

“He is the guy I’ve been looking for. I’m glad I asked him.”

  “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Kevin wanted it that way because he wasn’t sure how your gang of friends would feel about it.”

“They are all going to be pissed, including myself.” She glared at him.

“Hey…I’m not the enemy here. It’s what Kevin wanted, and he is going to be good at this.”

  “Is it a done deal?”

  “Yeah…I already told Rohan.”

“I’m happy and sad at the same time,” she whined.

He put his arm around her shoulder pulling her close to him. “You can see him when we go to India, and you can have your reunions when he visits us.”

  “I guess we could.”

“Cheer up, baby, this is good for Kevin.”

“Yes, I am happy for him and you do realize Kevin turned down a couple of international offers in the last year.”

“Yes, I’m just glad he accepted my offer.”

She smiled. “Don’t even think about poaching any of my interns.” She had quit her job and was working with Kris on the product that allowed parents to create custom books for their kids and sell them to other parents. She had hired her intern team who worked with her the previous summer.

“I promise.” He laughed slipping lower on to the mattress.

  “Kris…”

  “Yeah, baby,” he crooned.

“Do you miss having your own company?”

He looked at her with a quizzical look without responding.

“You took the job for me when you could be building another new product and doing something more exciting.”

He smiled rolling to his side placing his head on her lap, his face level with her rounded belly.

“Nothing is more exciting than our precious girls and most of all, you. Nothing excites me more.”

She ran her fingers through his hair looking into the eyes of the man that showed her the true meaning of love. She knew life was merciless at times, but nothing in the world bothered her as long as he was with her. She knew he would protect her and her children so no sorrow reached their hearts. She thanked the heavens everyday for that night, the time she locked her rules away for a fierce and reckless night.

  Chapter 1

“911, what is your emergency?” I heard the firm voice of a woman as I got out of my car at two o’clock in the morning.

“Hi, I’m reporting an accident. A car just went off the highway.” I looked at the dark colored sports car that was now lodged against a tree with its headlights pointed at the branches above.

The car had driven past me just a few seconds earlier as I took the exit. Half way through the exit, the car spun out of control, and I saw it roll off the road down the slope on one side of the curvy exit ramp. The driver wasn’t going that much faster than me to have lost control, and I was sure there was ice on the road. The temperatures had been too low for a California winter day, and I was sure a nice layer of ice had formed on the road.

  “What is your location, Ma’am?”

“I’m on 280 northbound at the 380 exit ramp,” I said, debating if I should go down the slope to check on the people in the car.

“Can you describe the vehicle to me?”

  “It’s a black sports car.”

  “Make and model?”

“It’s a BMW coupe, one of those tiny sports cars.”
