“How could I be so disobliging?” She winked.
After a breath, Evan’s face turned serious. “Megan Coulis, tell me that you love me.”
Megan looked up to the sky. The clouds were billowy and the sun was soon to set. There was the faintest hint of a star to the north where the sky had already begun to darken.
“Evan, I can say with almost complete certainty, that I have loved you every second of every minute of every day since the moment you said ‘knock knock’ at my dorm room door. That has not changed, and that will never change.”
Evan’s face lit up. “That’s all I need to know.”
But Megan still had her doubts. “But that doesn’t mean…”
“Shh. No.” He pressed a single finger to her lips. “I didn’t say it was going to be perfect. I didn’t say we were going to pick up where we left off. But now, I know you love me, and you know that I love you. That’s all that matters.”
“So it doesn’t matter that there’s three thousand miles between us?”
“Stop thinking. You think too much.” He jokingly scolded her. “Plus, I work from home aside from traveling to China here and there. Last time I checked, California was closer to China than Vermont. So that’s a win.”
“You would really move here for me?” Megan stepped in closer to him, remembering what it felt like to simply be in his presence.
“To be with you? In a heartbeat.”
“I bet your therapist wouldn’t be too happy with that.”
“My therapist?” Evan chuckled. “My therapist told me I shouldn’t see you. I fired him the next day.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “That sounds healthy.”
He felt the sarcasm in her voice. “I’ll be sure to find a better one as soon as I make the move.”
Megan felt her heart skip a beat. She was about to get everything she always dreamed: a new life, in a new place, with a new career…and the man she had loved since before she knew the word.
“You okay?” He bent down to see the expression on her face.”
Her soft smile made her face glow. “I’m happy. I don’t say that much.”
“I plan to change that.” He took her hand in his.
“Slow, right?”
“Very slow. Super slow. So slow that it’s going to make me crazy.”
She cleared her throat. “Maybe not that slow?”
“Oh thank goodness.” The both chuckled to one another.
“I missed you, Evan Covington.”
“And I missed you, Megan Coulis: like raspberry coulis.”
“I’m never going to live that one down, am I?”
“Oh, absolutely not.”
Evan pushed a strand of hair out of Megan’s face, and cupped her cheek in his hand.
“I have pond scum on my face and you’re wearing an expensive suit.”
“How long have you been away? Did you forget how much money I have?”
She bit her lip in embarrassment. “So it’s worth it to get a little dirty?”
“If you’re up for it, I’m willing to get very dirty.”
“Evan…”
“Right…slow…I know.”
“Just making sure.” She flirted.
“I hope you know I’d trade it all for one kiss with you.”
She had no doubt that with that kiss he meant ever word. It was slow and rich and full of a much different kind of want and need. In that kiss, she saw their future. She saw their struggles and their pain, but she also saw their triumph.
That one, shared kiss erased all doubt.
It was warmth.
It was happiness.
It was love.
It was everything.
Megan slipped her hand into Evan’s as they continued to walk to nowhere. “So.” She looked up at him, her bright blue eyes twinkling with the faintest hint of happy tears. “What are you making me for dinner?”
