  He turned his head to the side, as though listening to something only he could hear. Then he hedged a glance at her. “Though greatly that does please me, I have one slight obligation I must tend to first. Wait here, nymph. I’ll be back.”

  She wrapped her hands around the bars and scoffed at him. “You can’t be serious. You’ve promised to free me, and suddenly, you’ve changed your mind.”

  He casually lifted and dropped one shoulder. “Can’t take you with me, so you’ll have to wait here for my return. Pray pardon, Asteri. I’ll be back soon.”

  “Damn you, Rhoetus.” She thrashed against the bars and glowered at his retreating form. “Don’t you dare leave me in here.”
