The Amulet Thief (The Fitheach Trilogy Book 1) Page 29

by Luanne Bennett

I pulled my hand away from the scar. “But…this isn’t how I got it.” Even as I denied the memory, I knew it was true. “Why didn’t you tell me about this before? You let me go on about faeries, like a fool!”

He took a deep breath. “I knew you’d remember when you were ready. It just took a little longer than I expected.”

I’d held a piece of him all my life. That small shard of magic wasn’t just a connection—it was a pipeline. The more I thought about it, the more my heart sank. Ava wasn’t the only one who’d left me behind. “I’m really having trouble understanding this, Greer. Why didn’t you come for me? I had no one.”

I could see the frustration in his face for not having the right answer. “I couldn’t see you,” he said. I looked down at my hands and he lifted my chin to bring my gaze back to his. “But I could feel you.”

I remembered why that small white charm was so important to me—it worked. That’s why I never took it for granted and never wasted my wishes on stupid things like new shoes. There’s a good reason why I made it past all those land mines and made it back here, and it wasn’t just luck. No one is that lucky.

“You were always there, weren’t you?”

He didn’t answer, but now I knew it wasn’t the faeries responding to my prayers.

“There’s something else I have to tell you,” I said.

His eyes roamed over my face as if he were trying to work out who the girl in front of him was. “I had a chat with your friend—Katie? I know about the mark.”

He must have gotten to the shop right after I left, while Katie was still inside.

“If I ask you something, will you give me a straight answer? No sugarcoating, Greer. I’m not made of glass.”

  He nodded.

“I once asked you what you were. Greer…what am I?”

He tilted his head as if the question surprised him. “Haven’t you figured that out by now?”

“I’m not talking about being the Oracle, Greer. I mean, what makes me so damn special that I was chosen?”

“Alex, you are the daughter of a Raven. That makes you extraordinary.”

I didn’t feel extraordinary. But I guess someone saw something in me because I was the Oracle, and the fate of the world stopped at me. It terrified me and filled me with pride at the same time.

A smile spread over his face as if he was doing that annoying reading of my mind thing again. I stood up and extended my hand to him, with no thought to the fact that I was naked and dripping all over the floor.

  “Let’s go find that vessel.”
