That didn’t mean that he had to be happy about it.
“If anything happens to my son, I will kill you. Do you understand me?” Kayden demanded scribbling out a note for Abby. He just had to hope that the old woman would trust him enough to send Cameron with a group of total strangers.
Taking the note from Kayden once it was finished, Cyrus pocketed it with a nod.
“I will go to retrieve your son myself,” he promised, looking back at Kayden. “You don’t have to like me; you just need to trust me. I will not let anything happen to your son.” He pulled back and moved towards the door. “Please don’t try to leave, I promise you that you won’t get far.” He moved out the door and closed it behind him.
“I don’t like him,” Kayden grumbled the moment that they were alone. He bristled when Neil chuckled tiredly and wrapped his arms around his waist.
“Like he said, you don’t have to like him,” Neil mumbled, pressing a kiss gently to his lips.
Chapter Ten
Cameron was not happy when he arrived with Cyrus. The toddler was squalling and complaining noisily in his captor’s arms. Cyrus looked just as upset as Cameron. The man was balancing the toddler in one arm while his other arm was burdened down with the diaper bag that Kayden had sent with Cameron to Abby’s.
The moment that they moved inside, Kayden rescued his livid son from the flustered soldier. Pressing kisses over the boy’s face, the child’s immediately lit up with happiness. Babbling happily as he clung onto his mother, the boy pressed his face to his father’s neck and let the man cradle him to his chest.
“Not great with children I take it?” Neil raised his eyebrow at Cyrus who immediately responded with a rude gesture before moving out of the room and disappearing into what Kayden assumed was his rooms. “We’ll have to thank him, you know.” He chuckled, clearly amused with the Commander’s response to dealing with a child.
“He’s lucky that I don’t shove his gun straight up his-,” Kayden cut off when Neil raised an eyebrow at him, shaking his head and moving up the stairs to their bedroom. Settling down on the well-worn sheets on the queen sized bed, he trailed his fingers through his son’s hair as the fussy toddler settled in his arms.
“You know you would do the same thing if it was me who had been taken,” Neil insisted, sitting down beside his lover and wrapping an arm around his shoulder.
Kayden didn’t respond. He didn’t have to. Neil knew that he was right.
That didn’t make Kayden any happier.
“We could make a home here, you know,” Neil mumbled, pressing his lips to the top of Kayden’s head.
“We have a home up there,” Kayden grumbled, closing his eyes and trailing his fingers over Cameron’s back. “We can’t just give up on everything that we had up there,” he insisted, looking up at Neil with desperate eyes.
“We aren’t giving up everything,” Neil stated firmly, looking back at the man with soft eyes. There was a sad smile on his lips. “We have each other, Cameron, and this little one on the way.” He smiled, resting his hand on Kayden’s stomach.
“We’re prisoners down here,” Kayden argued.
“Was life any better up there? I guarantee that down here we have a better chance at living than we ever will up there,” Neil’s tone was firm, but not commanding. He wasn’t arguing with Kayden, merely trying to convince him of the facts. “You know that this is a real chance for us. For all of us.” He gently trailed his fingers through Kayden’s hair and kissed his temple.
Letting out a soft sigh, Kayden shakily pressed his face to his lover’s neck.
“I hate it when you’re right, you know that?” He hated how defeated he sounded. There was nothing he wanted more than to have something to prove that Neil was wrong, but he couldn’t think of anything. “Do you think that we’ll be able to get your brother back?” he asked softly, looking up at the man and biting his lip when the man didn’t meet his gaze.
“If we can, we will. If not?” Neil lifted up Kayden’s chin and leaned in to press his lips against his lover’s. “We’ll figure that out when the time comes.” He insisted, smiling when Kayden nodded.
There were so many questions that Kayden still had. The uncertainty of the future was nauseating, but he knew that there was nothing that could be done for the moment. All that mattered was that his family was safe. He would do anything to ensure that they remained that way.
Even if he had no idea how the city of Nox worked, he would do his best to make it his home. At least he knew that he had a real shot at making a difference. After all, if Cyrus could run the entire system on his own, then there was no reason that Kayden himsel couldn’t be more than what the rest of the world thought he could be.
“What are we going to do about the mob? If you disappear, then they’ll start hiring out to someone else.” Kayden bit his lip, looking up at his mate.
“One day at a time,” Neil insisted. “They were going to replace me eventually anyway, and right now? Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing if the government’s attention is on someone else.” He grinned wickedly, laughing when Kayden rolled his eyes. “Who knows, maybe they’ll wipe each other out.”
“We will never be that lucky,” Kayden teased, kissing under Neil’s chin and relaxing back against his chest.
“You never know, I’ve been pretty lucky so far.” Neil beamed, laughing when Kayden shook his head and shoved him back against the bed. Standing up with Cameron in his arms, he stuck out his tongue.
“I wouldn’t call it luck,” Kayden insisted, placing Cameron onto a small mattress on the ground that Neil had found for Cameron to sleep on.
“Oh? What would you call it?” Neil asked, lying back against the bed and beaming when Kayden crawled over the top of him.
“A miracle. You, sir, are a master of coincidence,” Kayden laughed, kissing his lover slowly and humming when the man rolled and pinned him to the bed.
“As long as that means that I get to keep you, I’m alright with that,” Neil whispered, brushing Kayden’s hair out of his face. For a moment, the world melted away leaving them alone in their own little bubble.
“I love you Neil,” Kayden breathed, trailing his fingers over his alpha’s chest.
“I love you too, more than you could ever imagine.”

Description:
Jason
My brother is missing and I need answers even if that means stalking Conner. This kid is pretty reckless commingling with the blood suckers. I’ve been keeping an eye on him, but getting myself killed isn’t in my plan and I need him alive.
Conner
This guy has been following me for weeks now. How long am I going to have to keep him busy? I don’t know what happened to his brother and am under strict instruction not to communicate with him. But after a chance encounter with someone from the underworld, I’m not feeling like myself and Jason seems to be the only person who can help me. I don’t know what’s going to happen to me after my tribe finds out just how far I’ve gone with him, but there’s no hiding this situation.
****************************
I hid in the shadows, knowing that if they saw me, I would be dead. I watched people walking in and out of the nightclub. People, I thought with a sublet laugh. You couldn’t call the creatures walking around after two in the morning people. They were monsters, they were vampires. Still, they weren’t my main target. I didn’t know how he could be so naive. Maybe he was just lost or confused, but the man I was watching actually went into the late night club. It blew my mind how someone could be so naive. Yet there he was in all of his handsome glory.
His name was Conner Patrick and he knew something about my missing brother. I was sure of it. After months of sifting through the wreckage of my brother’s life, I had stumbl
ed across the man I was not hunting. I had gone from my usually mundane life to a world of darkness and chaos. In the process of following my brother’s trail, I had stumbled upon so much more.
I couldn’t see him anymore, cussing under my breath; I knew what I had to do. Stepping from the shadows, I made my way into the nightclub. The bouncer didn’t even give me a second look. He didn’t care that I wasn’t yet twenty-one or that I was walking into my own death. As long as he got paid, it didn’t matter.
“What can I get you doll?” asked the woman behind the bar.
I was taken aback, she was human! “Umm, just a beer please.”
He grinned at me, “You don’t look old enough to be here.”
“They let me in didn’t they?” I said to her.
She laughed, “Honey, I don’t really care either way. I just don’t think a place like this is good for a kid like you.”
“What?” I asked her. My mind had drifted from what she was saying to the figure down the bar. Conner was busy flirting with a man who looked to be my age. I knew better though, he could have been a thousand years old and he would look the same.
Her gaze followed mind, “Ahhh.” She said knowingly, “Let me guess, your ex-boyfriend there decided to trade you in on fresh meat?”
“What? No!” I stammered, “He’s not my boyfriend! I was just curious is all.”
I quickly looked away from the action going on at the end of the bar, instead watching them with my peripheral vision. The bartender was still smiling at me.
“Listen, if you are going to give me crap about being in here, then maybe I should return the favor. You seem a bit too,” I lowered my voice, “Alive to be in here.”
Her eyes widened. “Well now, it would see you are smarter than you look. Tell me, what brings a boy like you in here, knowing the dangers?”
“What makes a woman like you work in a place like this?” I shot back at her.
Her chilling laughter filled the room, “Trust me honey, I don’t have anything to worry about, unlike you.”
“Thanks for the drink, but I think I’ve overstayed my welcome,” I said.
“My name is Gwen,” She replied with a wink. “You better make you exit fast kiddo.”
I nodded and spun around, searching for the door through the thick haze of hookah smoke and the stench of blood it was working to cover. I found the door without being followed, but it was too late. My target was gone. I cussed once again. I knew where Conner lived; I just hoped he’d taken his date back to his place. I also hoped that it wasn’t too late. I didn’t know what he was, but I knew he was something different; he was something not entirely human.
I started making my way back to his apartment. I had waited for too long to confront him and tonight had shown me just how much I was risking by waiting any longer. I needed answers and I needed them right away.
“Where are you headed?” came a voice from behind me.
I flinched, “Just heading home.”
I kept walking, listening to the footsteps behind me. As I walked, I fumbled through my pocket with shaking hands. Finally, I produced the small ultraviolet flashing I always kept with me.
“That’s a shame,” He said to me.
I felt him brush against my arm and I flicked on the light, spinning and shining it right into his eyes. He cried out, but didn’t smoke like any other vampire would.
“Jesus Jason! What the hell is wrong with you?” asked Kurt.
I sighed, “You scared the crap out of me!” I yelled at my best friend and roommate.
“What the heck are you doing here?” I asked him.
“I was at a club uptown and my date wanted to come here, but the place freaked me out so I bailed! What are you gonna do with a flash light anyways? Try some pepper spray next time.” He replied, rubbing his eyes.
I sighed, “Yeah, I must have grabbed the wrong thing. Oh well,” I said, my worry growing. “What do you say we head home?”
He nodded his head, “Fine with me, this night was a bust. What about you?”
I shook my head. He knew I was looking for clues about my brother, but he didn’t know how deeply I had gone. I wanted to make sure he made it home safe, more than I wanted to follow Conner. It was a lucky break that he didn’t go into the vampire’s club, otherwise he never would have made it back out again.
“Do me a favor?” I asked him. “Don’t go back to that place.”
“You don’t gotta tell me twice, it was creepy as hell!” He replied as we climbed into the cab.
“Good,” I muttered. “There’s always tomorrow, right?”
He laughed, “Sure Jason, whatever you say.”
I watched the city fly past the window. Another night of failure.
I blinked against the harsh light of the day, my eyes felt like they were on fire. I shook my head, trying to free myself from the crippling migraine that was starting to form deep inside my brain. The night before had turned into one wild ride. I hadn’t planned on bringing the dark stranger back to my home, but things happen. Never before had I set foot in the unusual night club and judging by the hangover, I never would again.
My phone started to ring as I struggled to find it. “What?” I grumbled.
“Good Morning sunshine,” said Micha with a cheerful voice.
“Sure, I guess you could call it that. I sure as hell wouldn’t though.” I muttered.
He laughed, “I was just wondering how things went last night? Did you see him?” he asked me.
I knew who he was talking about, the man who was following me. He was looking for information about his brother, but I was told not to get in the middle of it. I couldn’t be of any help to the poor kid, no matter how hard he tried.
“Yeah Micha, I saw him. He’s still following me just like you said he would.” I replied softly.
I heard him sigh, “I don’t know what to do. He won’t give up.”
“We just have to keep wearing him down, he will eventually.” I replied.
“Sure, whatever you say. Will you be at the meeting tonight?” he asked me.
He was talking about the gathering of the pack leaders. It happened once a month or when they had something important to say. Of course, the elders of our pack always thought that things were dire in the outside world.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world; it sounds like so much fun.” I said, my voice laced with sarcasm.
Micha laughed, “That’s the spirit. Go sleep off that hangover I bet you have. I’ll see you tonight.”
I hung up the phone and let out a dramatic sigh. Bits and pieces of the night before came flooding back to me. My date had been a wild ride, more than I had expected. I felt around my neck, looking for a wound. I could have sworn the man had bit me, enough to draw blood even! I must have imagined it in my drunken state. The more I tried to wake up, the more I wondered if my drink had been laced.
The pounding in my head would not go away. It felt like my brain was trying to explode out of its confines. I tried to sit up, maybe water would help, but it was near useless. Nothing was stopping the pain. As I rose to my feet and stumbled to the bathroom, the searing pain grew worse, it felt like my arm was on fire! I looked down to where it glistened in the sunlight and screamed. My skin was literally almost on fire!
I jumped backwards instinctively away from the pain. As soon as I was away from the light, I watched in stunned silence as my skin started to heal itself. As a shifter, healing was nothing new. Never had it worked so quickly though. My mind was racing, something was definitely wrong. Glancing at the sunlight again, I moved slowly to where it had cast down on my arm.
Gingerly, I stuck a few fingers into its warm beams and right away, the burning sensation returned and I jerked backwards.
“What the hell?” I said out loud.
I jumped through the light into the bathroom and looked in the mirror, what I saw was enough to make me lose my balance and stumble backwards into the glass shower door. My eyes, normally the golden
color of my lion shifter side, were blood red. As I crashed into the glass, I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest. Something was very wrong. The glass shattered all around me, but I didn’t feel the pain as it cut through my flesh, I was healing almost instantly.
The front door opened, “Who’s there?” I yelled, trying to rise from the bathroom. I looked up and saw the man who had been following me. “Oh shit.” I muttered.
He surveyed the scene before grabbing hold of my arm and pulling me out of the glass filled shower, cutting his arm in the process.
“Who are you?” I faked, “Why are you in my home.”
He blushed, “I was just about to knock when I heard the crash, are you okay?”
I glared at him, “I am fine.” “What’s wrong with your eyes?” He asked me, peering deep into them.
I wanted to answer him, but suddenly, I caught the scent of something delicious. Like the smell of a fresh kill when I was hunting in my lion form, but more. It was so intoxicating that it controlled all of my senses. I didn’t care why Jason was in my home any longer as I sniffed the air, I had to find the source of the meal. Jason backed away from me, covering his arm. It didn’t take me long to realize why. The blood was dripping from under his fingers and it smelled amazing.
His eyes narrowed, “Conner?”
I jerked my head up, breaking the trance and shaking my head, “What is wrong with me?”
“Oh my god, that man last night, did he bite you?” he asked me.
I glared at him, “Why are you following me? What’s wrong with you?”
He puffed out his chest and glared right back. For the first time, I got a good look at him. Underneath the consuming scent was something else. He was stunningly handsome. His broad shoulders and unkempt hair matched his hazel eyes and tanned body perfectly. I felt my heart start to race as I looked into his eyes, the desire towering over the hunger.
“I think you know why I’m following you, and it’s time we had a little talk.” he said sternly.
