“You keep postponing telling me many things, starting with this,” he pointed at Randy’ perfectly round stomach. “I’m already used to that. So, you’re with The Dealbreakers. What deal do you want me to make with you?”
“Actually, you already made one, pal,” a sturdy, bearded man who was sitting at the table said. “You made Randy pregnant. You became one of us. You need to feed your new family, and you also need to keep a good relationship with Randy’s family.”
“Let me explain it to him, Dan, please?” Randy said, and Dan gestured to him to go ahead and explain.
“We were doing some business with your base. We had some soldiers in charge of cargo transfer extra cargo with theirs. Tons of weapons. But our allegiances are getting weaker, so we needed someone influential enough to save this ship from sinking. They just smuggle some extra weapons for us, we pay up front for each delivery. But some of them are getting scared of getting caught, so we might lose this line of transportation in the future. So, as I said, we needed someone who won’t back out, and who’s influential enough to help us out.”
“How you can say all that in one breath and with such a flat expression is beyond me,” Josh said, “You look all slutty and you sugarcoat your words. You even reached as far as to feign love and distort your body to make children, just for business purposes? You disgust me, Randy, you really do!”
“It goes without saying,” Randy continued, as if Josh had not said anything at all, “That we can hire a woman to act as your wife, and as soon as I give birth, she would assume my role. Your family doesn’t need to know. We obviously need you for our cause, so we would never jeopardize your position at your workplace…”
“You thought this through pretty thoroughly, I see. Well, thanks a bunch.”
“Now that the boy told you everything, there’s nothing left for you to do but adhere to what we put before you. I’m looking forward to working with you, and please take good care of our Randy,” said Dan, who was obviously the leader of the gang. The men stood up and left soon after, leaving Josh and Randy alone. Randy did not dare look at his lover.
“Are they wolves?”
“No…”
“Great.” With that, Josh took his car keys and exited the house.
The very next day, Josh bribed a doctor into making a false report that he was slowly going blind. He submitted this together with his resignation immediately afterward. He deeply apologized to his superiors, and they were very nice about it, deeming him a very conscientious soldier. Even though he loved his job beyond words and was quickly climbing ranks, he did not like being given an ultimatum, or being threatened in any way. Perhaps this way was the best way in which he could save his face and retreat with dignity. Feigning blindness would be nothing compared with what he would have had gone through had he accepted to go along their wishes.
“Tell your goons I’ll tear them apart if they try anything. You’ll have your child and you’ll leave him or her to me. I don’t want to see your face ever again,” he told Randy when he got back. He was feeling drained and desolate. He had some savings, but he had to find another job, or to move altogether to escape this gang. He had to find something respectable for the child that was to come to this world in two short months. He had to do so many things, and his thoughts were rushing constantly in so many directions.
“Josh, if you’d please listen to what I have to say…”
“I’ll tell you what you wanna say. You had your eyes on me from the beginning. You knew everything you needed to know in order to be sure I’m your perfect candidate. I already know that.”
“It may be so, but I genuinely fell in love with you. I really love you.”
“Really? Don’t you have any shame whatsoever, Randy? Lying to me to my face for the entire year?”
“I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m asking you to hear me out. I made a terrible mistake. I mean, I love you now. Hell, I fell in love with you while we were still friends. I had no choice but to do what I was told to do. That’s my job. That’s what I do,” Randy was desperately trying to explain.
“So what do you want to say? What benefit do I have from you loving me, when you stabbed me in the back more than once? Do you do that to the man you love? Do you make him quit his job because he doesn’t want to smuggle things for you? Do you get pregnant without his knowledge of werewolf anatomy, just so you could keep him for your gang’s purposes?” Josh was beyond angry at this point.
“No, you’re right,” Randy lowered his head. “And I feel really sorry for doing that. But now that you quit your job, they’re going to cut this thing out of me. It serves no purpose to them anymore.”
“That’s what you get for your vicious ploy,” Josh cruelly replied. “But it’s my child too, and I won’t let them. I’ll protect you until you give birth, and then you’ll scram and never show your face in front of me ever again. That’s the plan, and that’s how we’re going to do it. Now,” he was already beginning to form a plan. “I already sold the house—I had some connections—so pack your things. I bought another one. I know you can’t travel much, but we’ll have to take that chance. You’re going to give me all of your electronic devices. You are not allowed to use them. I’ll tie your eyes until we reach our destination. You’re basically going to be my prisoner.”
Randy wanted to ask him how he could behave so cruelly to him, but decided to keep quiet since he was no better. He agreed to everything Josh had told him that night. He began packing immediately, and Josh helped him. They packed only necessary things, and it took about two hours. Josh put everything in the trunk, broke all of the devices in the house including computers and phones, and tied Randy next to him to sleep a bit before the next day’s big trip.
They departed early in the morning, with Randy with a blindfold over his eyes and headphones over his ears to keep him from hearing anything that could give away the location they were passing through. The feeling was defeating to both of them, with Randy sitting there regretting his decisions, picking at the seat with his fingers and feeling the vibrations of the vehicle as they rushed toward their new home. He did not intend to do anything anyway, but he understood the reason Josh was acting the way he was, and could justify all the mistrust and disgust his lover was feeling.
Josh could not believe how easily he had been tricked. He did not presume life would go easy on him from that point onward, despite him taking extreme measures to hide them well and make the life tolerable. His heart was deeply broken. He could see that Randy was feeling sad as well, and he wanted to hug him, to tell him that they would work things through, but he himself had little faith in their future relationship. He had his pride to uphold, and his safety. And now that the child was on its way, he could not take chances.
The house in question was a small cottage with a kitchenette and a dining room, a small living room, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. From what Randy could see, it was pretty remote and barely accessible. Thankfully, the roads had been relatively good, and he knew the baby and himself were not in danger. Everything was tastefully decorated; there was not much furniture, but it still felt like home. It still gave that feeling of belonging, and the nursery was decorated in a simple, but endearing manner. He immediately knew how much effort Josh had put into it, given the fact that everything looked perfect, and he had arranged for this during such a short period of time.
“I do really regret my decisions,” he told Josh, while they were sitting at the dining room table having a small snack. “You’re such a dependable, capable man. And please, before you say anything toxic, let me finish. I’m endlessly grateful to you for accepting to be the parent of this baby. You could have simply denied its existence, but you stayed by my side. I feel so bad that I tricked you, but there was no way I could abandon the gang. I really wanted to, when I saw how everything got serious with you. I’m still serious about you, and I love you. I know this doesn’t mean much to you right now, and please don’t think that this is my trying to
elicit some sympathy from you. That’s not my intention at all. I just want you to know that I’m sorry.”
“Okay,” Josh simply replied. “Sorry for not being very eloquent, but that’s the only thing I can say right now.”
“Understood,” Randy cast a weak smile in his direction. “I deserve it.”
Days were passing peacefully. Randy was allowed to go freely into the woods as long as he was within Josh’s eyesight. At night, they were sleeping in the same bed, and in the mornings, they would converse on various topics while having breakfast. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary save for the lack of intimacy, but that was reasonable considering what had happened not so long ago. And so Randy passed into his ninth month of pregnancy. Both men were excited about having a child, and that drove them a bit closer, yet Josh was still visibly wary of the father of his baby.
But, yet again, the days of tranquility were over again, for they were found by The Dealbreakers. They broke into their home one evening, but Josh was quick to turn into his wolf form, not entirely sure what to do since he had not shifted shapes in a long while, nor had he ever assaulted anyone while being in that form. It was worth a try, however, since his shifting served as an element of surprise. He decided to murder them all, and ensure the safety of his family for good. Without much ado, he jumped among the crowd before they could draw or shoot from their weapons and began tearing them to pieces. While doing so, he felt reconnected with his other self, his other nature. Never in his life had he felt fulfilled. After a half an hour, all of The Dealbreakers were dead.
Randy watched with fascination what his lover was capable of, and felt that by doing so, Josh was enabling them to choose a new life path. He helped him clean up the mess, and refrigerate some of the meat. They did not want to be wasteful, after all. They burned the men’s clothes, dismantled their cars and buried the parts. Everything was done within two days, but that much work made Randy go into labor a week before he was due.
Josh did not know what exactly he should do, so he prepared everything he had seen in movies—clean towels, and a lot of hot water. He placed Randy on the bed, and asked what he should do next.
“You have to cut me,” Randy said. “Since I can’t make a vagina now…”
“I know, I know,” Josh said nervously. “I’ll do my best to make this right…”
And he did. He had already had some practice with small procedures when on the battlefield, and this proved to be helpful to him. He extracted his baby carefully, and it immediately started crying. It was a normal baby at a first glance, nothing out of the ordinary. He tied him into one of the towels and gave it to Randy. “I’m gonna clean you and stitch you up,” he told him. Randy was only smiling placidly at him.
It was only when he was done with Randy’s wound that he was able to relax. The baby was sleeping contently in his arms. He looked at them and smiled. “Do you need anything?” He asked gently.
“Just stay with us a bit. Let’s make things work out. Please.”
“…I’ll try doing that,” Josh said gently, once more, sitting beside his lover and their first child. It was small and round. “I really hope we can become a family; get off the grid, disappear completely, and start over.”
“We’ll do our best. Now that we have our baby boy here with us, nothing seems to be impossible. We’re gonna train him to be a respectable little wolf.”
“Yeah. And we’re gonna find him other wolves to play with. I don’t want him to be lonely like I was.”
“Yes, of course. Everything’s going to be just fine,” Randy took Josh’s hand into his.
“It will,” Josh replied, looking at their firstborn with love.

*******************************
The constant buzzing of his phone on the nightstand was starting to drive him mad. Lying out in bed, glaring at the device while mid-afternoon sun streamed through the cracks in his curtain, Caleb realized that his friends weren’t going to let up on him anytime soon. Slowly sitting up, Caleb ran his fingers through his tousled strawberry blonde hair and snagged the phone that had dragged him from his dreamless sleep.
Four missed calls and ten messages from Max. Caleb couldn’t help but give him credit: the man was relentless.
Flicking his thumb across the screen when it lit up once more, Caleb lifted the accursed device up to his ear.
“What is it, Max?” He demanded, lying back down on the sheets and closing his eyes as his friend let out a flustered noise of relief on the other side. “Today’s my first day off in a week; I’m allowed to sleep in.”
“It’s three in the afternoon,” Max snapped, his tone earning a grimace from Caleb. He was really not looking forward to the verbal lashing he was obviously about to receive. “What is it? Dude, you broke it off with Ava last night! What do you think I’m trying to get a hold of you for?” Max’s voice was irritated, flustered with his friend’s lack of interest in explaining himself.
“Yeah I did, and it wasn’t out of the blue,” Caleb grumbled, peeling himself out of bed and moving over to the dresser to pull on a shirt. “I’ve been telling you for months that I didn’t feel like things were going anywhere between us. I told you flat out that I was starting to think maybe I wasn’t all that interested in girls?” He reminded his friend, moving into the bathroom to brush his teeth and get rid of the lingering taste of beer on his tongue.
“So what? Five years of dating her, and you’re suddenly gay?” Max questioned, earning a sigh from Caleb.
“No, I am not just suddenly gay, Max, don’t be stupid,” Caleb huffed, looking himself over in the mirror. After the conversation he had with Ava the night before, he had one too many beers in an attempt to sleep off the guilt. His usually bright cornflower blue eyes looked dim and bloodshot. His full lips were lacking their natural coloring, and his freckled skin looked even paler than it usually did.
He hadn’t expected to break it off with Ava the night before, but when gentle kisses on the couch started to escalate into sex, he found that he couldn’t force himself to be sexually attracted to his girlfriend. She had, of course, asked if something was wrong, and instead of lying like he normally would, he finally broke down, telling her everything that he had been hiding for the past few years.
Caleb had expected anger, but Ava, the kind hearted woman that she was, told him that she had known that he was at least bi-sexual for years. She had known that their relationship wasn’t going anywhere, but like Caleb had enjoyed his company too much to want to end it. He still loved her dearly, but he was almost twenty-five, and he needed to realize that if he ever wanted to really be happy, he needed to come to terms with the fact that their love was purely platonic.
“Right, sorry. It’s just a shock is all, you two have been together since freshman year of college,” Max muttered, sounding a little bit calmer than he was at the start of their conversation. “So, now that you’re single, that means you’re finally going that club with me tonight.”
“Cosmos? The gay bar?” Caleb demanded, moving into his kitchen to make a pot of coffee while Max let out an affirmative noise on the other end. “You really aren’t going to let me just mourn the loss of a five-year relationship are you?”
“No sir,” Max laughed, sounding pleased with himself, “I’ll be there to pick you up tonight at seven sharp. You’re going from the straight stream right into the b
ig gay ocean where you belong my friend!” Rolling his eyes, Caleb pinched the bridge of his nose with a tired noise.
“Yeah alright, I’ll go to your stupid club,” He relented, deciding he really didn’t have anything to lose at that point.
“You say as if I was going to give you a choice. Later, loser!” Caleb had to laugh at Max’s response, shaking his head as he hung up the phone. At least he didn’t have to go to the club alone.
Pulling up to the packed club in Max’s black Toyota Camry, Caleb felt the first twinges of anxiety roll through him. Clubs had never been his scene. In fact, they were places that he went out of his way to actively avoid. Still, if he wanted to forget about what happened with Ava, a club was loud enough to drown out most rational thoughts.
“Excited?” Max asked, pulling his friend out of the car once they were parked, “It’s Friday night, dude, all the hot guys are going to be out!” He insisted, moving past the bouncer with a quick flash of their ID’s.
“Not really, but you know I’ll try anything once,” Caleb explained, grimacing as Max spotted a few of his friends, and dragged him over to the bar. Hiding as far in the corner as he could while Max chatted eagerly with a group of sweaty, flamboyantly dressed men, Caleb ordered himself a beer in an attempt to calm his nerves.
He was going to be ok. He told himself, pulling at the collar of his dark green button-up shirt. Sipping at his beer, he felt his stomach drop when Max was dragged towards the dance floor, simultaneously abandoning him.
“Well, that only took three seconds,” he muttered bitterly, tearing at the label on his beer and jumping when he heard a throaty chuckle behind him.
“You don’t seem to be enjoying yourself,” A deep, accented voice hummed behind him. Glancing up, he felt his heart jump into his throat when the beautiful man standing beside him flashed him a charismatic grin. Extending a massive hand for Caleb to shake, he chuckled softly. “I’m Johannes, Johannes Almstead.” He explained, sending a shiver down Caleb’s spine when his storm-grey eyes studied over Caleb’s stunned form.
