What Goes Around Comes Around
Beware the Solitary Drinker
McNulty’s Old Favorites
Have a drink with McNulty.
MARTINI
(A true martini is made with gin [maybe vodka] and vermouth. Those other things with apples or chocolate are cocktails, not martinis.)
3 oz. Beefeater gin
dash of dry vermouth (French)
olive
Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes, add gin and dash (8–10 drops) of vermouth; stir for 20 to 30 seconds. Pour into a chilled stem glass. Add the olive and a couple of drops of olive juice.
MANHATTAN
2 oz. blended whiskey or bourbon
¾ oz. red (sweet) vermouth
dash of bitters (optional)
maraschino cherry
Combine ingredients with ice in a mixing glass; stir until chilled. Strain into a stem cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
STINGER
1 oz. brandy
1 oz. white crème de menthe
Fill a mixing glass with ice; add liquors. Stir for 20 or 30 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass.
GIMLET
2 oz. gin (or vodka)
1/2 oz. Rose’s Lime Juice
Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes, add gin and Rose’s Lime Juice; stir for 20 to 30 seconds. Pour into a chilled stem glass.
OLD-FASHIONED
2 oz. bourbon or whiskey
cube (or teaspoon) of sugar
dash of Angostura bitters
orange slice
maraschino cherry
Muddle the sugar and bitter in a rocks glass (or old-fashioned glass, if you can find one), add bourbon and ice. Stir. Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.
BLOODY MARY
4 oz. tomato juice
1.5 oz. vodka
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1–3 dashes Tabasco
juice of ¼ lemon or lime
dash celery salt
dash salt, pepper
celery stalk
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. (You have to juggle the proportions of ingredients until you find the mixture that suits you.) Shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass or pour over ice in a highball glass (It’s a toss-up). Garnish with a celery stalk.
MARGARITA
2 oz. white tequila (gold if you want to show off)
1 oz. Cointreau (triple sec if you’re on a tight budget)
1 oz. fresh lime juice
lime wedge
Combine ingredients in a shaker. Shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass with a salted rim. (To salt glass, run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass, dip the rim in a bowl of salt.) Garnish with the aforementioned lime wedge.
SHOT OF TEQUILA
(ONE OF MCNULTY’S FAVORITES)
1.5 oz of tequila in shot glass
wedge of lime
salt shaker
Rub the wedge of lime between your thumb and forefinger on the back of either hand. Shake the salt on your lime-flavored hand. Take the lime wedge in your salted hand, and the shot of Tequila in the other. Lick the salt off the back of your hand, and throw down shot. Suck on the lime wedge.
COSMOPOLITAN
(NOT ONE OF MCNULTY’S FAVORITES)
2 oz. vodka
1 oz. Cointreau
1/2 oz. cranberry juice
1/2 oz. lemon juice
lemon twist
Combine all liquids in a mixing glass. Add ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a stem glass. Add twist.
DAIQUIRI
1.5 oz. light rum
1 oz. fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon extra fine sugar
Combine ingredients with ice in a shaker. Shake vigorously 20 to 30 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass.
WHISKEY SOUR
1.5 oz. blended whiskey
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 teaspoon extra fine sugar
Combine ingredients with ice in a shaker. Shake vigorously 20 to 30 seconds. Pour into a sour glass. Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry. (Add 1/2 oz. of grenadine to make it Ward Eight.)
JACK ROSE
2 oz. applejack
1 oz. lime juice
1/2 oz. grenadine
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
SIDECAR
2 oz. Cognac (or brandy)
1 oz. Cointreau (or triple sec)
1 oz. lemon juice
Coat the rim of a chilled cocktail glass with sugar. Shake the ingredients with cracked ice and strain into the cocktail glass.
BALTIMORE BRACER
1 oz. brandy
1 oz. anisette
1 egg white
Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled. Pour into a cocktail glass.
IRISH DRINKS
IRISH WHISKEY PUNCH
1.5 oz Irish whiskey
1 teaspoon of sugar
2 slices of lemon
3 or 4 cloves
6 oz. boiling water
Combine whiskey, sugar, lemon, and cloves in glass with a metal spoon to conduct heat. Pour in boiling water.
IRISH COFFEE
1 teaspoon sugar
6 oz. hot black coffee
1.5 oz. Irish whiskey
2 tablespoons whipped cream
Combine sugar and enough hot coffee to dissolve the sugar. Add Irish whiskey and stir. Fill the glass to within an inch of the rim, using a metal spoon to conduct heat. Float the whipped cream on top of the coffee. Do not stir. Sip the whiskey-laced coffee through the whipped cream.
SOME BASIC HIGHBALLS (STIRRED DRINKS)
SCOTCH AND SODA (THE CROWN PRINCE OF STIRRED DRINKS)
1.5 oz. scotch
6 oz. club soda
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
MRS. MCNULTY’S STANDARD HIGHBALL
1.5 oz blended whiskey
6 oz. ginger ale
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
PRESBYTERIAN
1.5 oz. blended whiskey
3 oz. ginger ale
3 oz. club soda
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
BRANDY AND SODA
1.5 oz. brandy
6 oz. club soda
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
GIN AND TONIC
1.5 oz. gin
6 oz. tonic water
Stir with ice in a highball glass; garnish with a lime wedge.
RUM AND COKE
1.5 oz. rum
6 oz. Coke
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
CUBE LIBRE
Add a wedge of lime to a rum and Coke.
SCREWDRIVER
1.5 oz. vodka
6 oz. orange juice
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
CAPE CODDER
1.5 oz. vodka
6 oz. cranberry juice
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
MADRAS
1.5 oz. vodka
4 oz. cranberry juice
2 oz. orange juice
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
SEA BREEZE
1.5 oz. vodka
4 oz. cranberry juice
2 oz. grapefruit juice
Stir with ice in a highball glass.
SALTY DOG
1.5 oz. gin
5 oz. grapefruit juice.
Salt the rim of a highball glass by rubbing the rim with a wedge of lime and dipping it in bowl of salt. Pour gin and grapefruit juice over ice in the highball glass.
FANCY CREAM DRINKS
PINK LADY
1 oz. gin
1 teaspoon grenadine
1 teaspoon light cream
1 whole egg white
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
PINK SQUIRREL
1 oz. crème de noyeaux
1 tablespoon White Creme de Cacao
1 tablespoon Light Cream
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
BRANDY ALEXANDER
1 oz. brandy
1 oz. white crème de cacao
1 oz. heavy cream
dash nutmeg
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the brandy, crème de cacao, and cream. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with the nutmeg.
GRASSHOPPER
1 oz. green crème de menthe
1 oz. white crème de cacao
1 oz. light cream
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
