  CHAPTER 1

“Are you here?” Sabrina’s text from Jason read. She had finally been able to come and visit him after months and months of talking about it.

“I am on my way to pick up my luggage,” she texted back.

“Cool, I will meet you outside,” was the text that she got back from him.

“K,” Sabrina responded picking up her step. Jason and Sabrina had met in an online support group for widows and widowers. They had hit it off from the start both having similar sense of humors. They both had sons that were five years old. They both had lost their spouses in Afghanistan. Sabrina Benson had been married to her husband, Mark, for ten years when the Marine Chaplin and a recruiter had come to her door to notify her that her husband had been killed in the line of duty. Sabrina had completely fallen apart that day, devastated that she had lost the love of her life. Sabrina had known Mark since they were in the fifth grade. Mark had saved her from a bully on the playground and they were inseparable from that day on. Sabrina had not known that Mark had a crush on her and wanted to be more than friends until their senior year when he had kissed her on prom night. Sabrina was not what you would call a sexy vixen by any stretch of the imagination. She was 5’2” with dark brown eyes and chocolate brown skin, with a short and curly pixie haircut. Her hair was black with blonde streaks now but she still had the same cut. Sabrina had always been a ‘thick’ girl in high school. She had been a size twelve; now she was a size sixteen. Pregnancy had given her ass a little oomph. Her parents had not been well off so she had not had the best of, well anything, but she had clothes and food and a desire to work hard. Mark came from a military family; his father, his father’s father and his father’s father’s father were all in the military. He was a Man of Honor. He had joined the Marines right out of high school and Sabrina had been on her way to Brown University. Mark had asked her to marry him the day after graduation and she had happily accepted. She had gone to school and graduated from Brown with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and went right into being the dutiful military wife with no hesitation. Sabrina thought they had a good life. They had tried to have a baby for years getting all the “work” in when he was home. It had taken some years but they had both been ecstatic when they found out that she was pregnant with Noah. So when Sabrina had gotten Mark’s belongings and, well, you could have knocked her over with a feather when she realized that he had been cheating on her for most of their marriage and had a seven year old daughter living in West Virginia with his mistress. Sabrina could not remember ever experiencing so many emotions all at once. The woman that he had been having an affair with must have thought she would fight her for Mark’s military benefits. She had gotten an attorney before Sabrina had even gotten the will. She was surprised when Sabrina had stood proudly and said she did not want it, to give it all to her daughter and she would take care of Noah on her own. Finding out all the things that she had about her husband when he had died had soured Sabrina on relationships. She was not the type of woman that could give up on love completely. She had seen her mother and father have a very happy thirty year marriage and she refused to believe that was a fluke. To help her with her mourning, she had joined an online support group. She had decided that she could not look at people’s faces when she told them about what she had learned after her husband had been killed. No matter what, Sabrina had loved Mark and they had a beautiful son, and she missed her husband.

Sabrina arrived at the luggage area and was waiting on her suitcase when she got another text from Jason.

“Are you ready yet, woman?” the text read. Sabrina smiled and laughed. That was something Jason was good at, making her laugh. He was like that class clown in the group who was always making jokes and dirty comments; making people laugh and sometimes making people want to slap him. Sabrina had been able to see right from the start that was all a mask for his pain. Jason’s wife had died in a car accident while he was deployed to Afghanistan. Luckily their son, Jason Jr., had been spending the weekend with his grandmother so he had not lost his whole family. Like Sabrina, Jason had found out AFTER she had died that his wife had been cheating on him for years; so far back that he had to do a paternity test to confirm that he was Jason’s father. Jason was angry and hurt and grieving all at the same time. Jason’s motto was “Fuck Love. I will never be fooled by it again.” He had convinced himself that all he needed was a warm body in his bed every now and then. He would never be in another relationship.

“I am on my way, relax,” Sabrina texted back to him. Just then she saw her suitcase on the carousel. Finally out of her thoughts, Sabrina realized that there were two men staring at her. Sabrina was still shocked and amazed at what a little makeup and a sexy outfit could do for you. When she had told her best friend, Natalie, that she was finally going to meet Jason she had said, “Grab your coat. We are getting you a makeover. You will not go and meet that sexy ass solider dressed like you are the first, last and only black member of the Clamppetts from the Beverly Hillbillies.” After a two hour shopping spree and two hours at the salon, plus sized or not, Sabrina felt like a new woman. Well, not completely a new woman; she was still a little insecure about her body. But she knew with clothes on, she was looking good. Her flight attire was a glammed-out sleek and sexy strapless dark denim jumpsuit with four pockets, six gold buttons and skinny leg fit. She had brought it all together with bold gold accessories and sky-high heels and subtle but sexy makeup. Although all of this would be wasted on Jason since they were just friends. The plan was for Jason to try and fix her up with a friend of his. Grabbing her suitcase and giving a sexy wave to the two men that were still staring at her, Sabrina started toward the door where people were picked up. She sent a text to Jason, “I am coming out.”

As she stepped out into the warm Texas air, she looked to the right trying to see if she could spot Jason. They had exchanged pictures and talked for hours every day for six months. Although she had only sent him pictures that were above the neck, he had sent her pictures of the fifteen women he had sex with in the time that she had known him and none of them was larger than a size 4. As she was looking around, she suddenly felt lips on her shoulder. Before she knew it, she had turned around and punched Jason in the nose, full blow.

“OUCH!! OH BRINA, IT’S ME!” Jason yelled grabbing his now bleeding nose.

“OH MY GOD!” Sabrina said grabbing her mouth. She dropped her purse and her bag, trying to help Jason. “Oh my God! Jason, I am so sorry! I did not know it was you!” she was saying as Jason was yelling “OUCH” repeatedly and holding his face. Sabrina bent over and grabbed her purse pulling out the Kleenex trying to give them to him. “Hold still, you big baby,” Sabrina said as she got him leaned
up against his car.

“Don’t call me a baby, woman, you cold-cocked me!” Jason said. Sabrina was trying to hold back her laughter as Jason shoved two Kleenex up both nostrils and held his head back.

“Who walks up behind a woman that they have never met and kisses her shoulder as an introduction?”

“You are lucky that I did not use some of those self-defense moves I have been learning with Noah!” She was now laughing so hard there were tears in her eyes.

“Are you laughing at me?” Jason said looking at her. He still had Kleenex hanging out of his nose. Digging in her purse to pull out her mirror, Sabrina held it up for him. “Look at yourself!” she said laughing so hard she was almost doubled over. Taking the mirror from her, Jason started to laugh at himself; he did look completely ridiculous. Pulling herself together, Sabrina held her arms open offering a hug. “Hi, Jay, it’s so good to finally meet you.” Jason pulled Sabrina into his arms. “Hey, Bruce Leroy!” he said hugging her. It struck Jason how good it felt to hold Sabrina in his arms. He felt safe with her. It felt like home. Jason pulled away from Sabrina having made himself completely uncomfortable. “It’s great to finally see you, Brina, you look great!” Jason was saying as he picked up her luggage. He handed her purse to her and put her suitcase in the trunk. ‘She really is beautiful,’ he was thinking. Jason had just realized that he had never seen a picture of her below her shoulders. He wondered why now that he was seeing every inch of her tiny curvy incredible sexy frame. ‘Get it together, Jay! This is your friend,’ he thought as he closed the passenger side door for her and ran around to the driver’s side. Just as he was about to take off, Sabrina tried to hand him a small piece of paper. “This is the hotel I am booked in,” she said to him smiling.

Jason pushed her hand away. “Get out of here with that! You are coming home with me.” Jason started to drive out of the airport.

“No, Jay! I am not going to put you out. I booked a hotel!” Sabrina said to him. She didn’t realize how sexy Jay really was from his pictures. I guess the old adage ‘your pictures don’t do you justice’ really was true. Jason had blondish brown hair leaning more toward the brown side that he kept cut very low. He was a military man after all. His eyes were a deep green that changed colors and looked brown in the sun. He had an amazing tan; he did live in Texas so the tan was no surprise. He wore casual khaki shorts, a University of Texas Alumni t-shirt, and a pair of flip flops. Sabrina had always thought that Jason was handsome, but she had not realized until now how turned on she was by him. Jason continued to drive as if she had not spoken.

“JAY! Are you ignoring me?” Sabrina said to him.

“Ok, first you cold-cock me before saying hello. Now you are yelling at me! I am starting to feel like I picked up my wife!” Jason said laughing.

“You are such an ass!” Sabrina said to him “Seriously, Jason, don’t you think that I should stay at a hotel?”

“Yes, Sabrina, I think you should stay at a hotel. That is why I am taking you to my house so that you can stay in the guest room because I really think that you should stay in a hotel,” Jason said sarcastically. He was doing the motion of masturbation as he was talking.

“Jason, I know you masturbate frequently! But please don’t do it now. You are driving and I just ate!” Sabrina said sarcastically.

“I got something for your fine ass to eat,” Jason replied quickly. They both settled into silence for a little while. Sabrina was not quite sure how to take what he had just said to her. Then decided that he was just joking.

  CHAPTER 2

“Daddy, Daddy!” Jason Jr. said as he came out of the house running into his dad’s arms.

“JJ, JJ!” Jason said running toward his son like they were on a beach and had not seen each other in years. He swung his son into his arms and gave him a big hug and kiss. “Were you good for Mrs. Valdez while I was gone?” Jason said to his son.

“Yes!” JJ said to his dad. “Can I have my treat now? I was a good boy,” JJ said to his dad with his hand out.

“Hello, Mr. Jason,” Mrs. Valdez, his next door neighbor and sometime babysitter, said coming out of his front door. “JJ is always such a good boy,” she finished smiling at JJ as she rubbed his back. Mr. and Mrs. Valdez were Jason’s elderly Latino neighbors. They were both retired military and had five daughters and four sons that were military. They would sometimes watch JJ for Jason when he needed a babysitter. Mrs. Valdez was 6 feet tall with a wide frame that told the story of how well she had performed and had done her duty in the military. She was in her late sixties now so her hair was gray and pulled into a bun. She was wearing a yellow spaghetti strapped sundress that accented her brown skin perfectly.

“Thanks for watching him for me, Mrs. Valdez,” Jason said smiling at her as he reached in his pocket.

“Jason Schroeder, if you pull money out of that pocket, I promise you, you will regret it,” Mrs. Valdez said with her hand up looking away. Jason shoved the money back into his pocket and whistled as he looked around. He was not going to press his luck. Even in her sixties, he was sure Mrs. Valdez could take him.

Laughing, Sabrina said, “I like her!” as she walked toward Mrs. Valdez with her hand extended. “Hi, I am Sabrina, Sabrina Benson. It’s nice to meet you,” Sabrina finished. Before she knew it, she was wrapped in a bear hug from the elderly neighbor. “Oh Ok,” Sabrina said looking at Jason.

“Bienvenido a la familia mi querido,” Mrs. Valdez said to Sabrina which meant ‘welcome to the family.’ Smiling, Sabrina took her hand while she was shaking her head and said, ‘¡Oh! Somos sólo amigos,’ which meant ‘we are only friends.’

“Hey! I didn’t know you spoke Spanish,” Jason said to Sabrina.

“I told you like three times; I don’t know why not,” Sabrina said to Jason, shaking her head.

“Well, JJ and I are not fluent yet so no saying things we don’t understand,” Jason said to them.

“I know what she said, Daddy,” JJ said to his father hitting his leg. “Grandma Maria welcomed Ms. Brina to the family and Ms. Bree said that she was only your friend,” JJ finished. The ladies chuckled quietly. Then Sabrina looked at Mrs. Valdez and said, “Supongo que el único que no entiende es, Jason,” which meant ‘I guess the only one that does not understand is Jason.’ The ladies chuckled and so did JJ.

“Hey, I heard my name in there. I know you are talking about me,” Jason said pointing at Sabrina. Shaking her head, Sabrina turned to Mrs. Valdez. “It is a pleasure to meet you,” she said to her in English because she was pretty sure Jason was on the verge of tears. To make matters worse, JJ turned to his dad and said, “Do you know what she said right there, Daddy?”

“YES JJ!” Jason said picking him up and tickling him.

“I am going to get home to my Hector. It was lovely to meet you, my dear. I hope you can come to dinner tomorrow with Jason and Master JJ,” she said to Sabrina.

“Oh! Yes, I look forward to it. Can I bring anything?” Sabrina said to the woman as she walked away.

“Just make sure this one is on time,” she said pointing at Jason. Jason and JJ spent every Sunday having dinners with Mr. and Mrs. Valdez. It was a tradition that they had started the first week Jason moved here. It was where he had some of the best Mexican dishes in his life. But he was always late, to dinner fighting off one Saturday night “date” or the other. Smiling and shaking her head, Sabrina said, “I will.” Turning toward Jason, Sabrina started to say something and Jason held up his hand. “DON’T ask,” he said. Sabrina laughed and left it alone. She kneeled down in front of JJ and took his hands in hers. “Hi, JJ, it is so nice to finally meet the cutest young man I have ever met,” she finished smiling.

“Even cuter than Daddy?” JJ asked.

“MUCH cuter than Daddy,” Sabrina said hugging the little boy.

“HEY!” Jason said. “What is it, kick a brother in the ding-ding day?” he said grabbing Sabrina’s suitcase out of the trunk. As JJ ran off to play, Sabrina and Jason sta
rted to walk in the house.

“First,” Sabrina said to him, “you are not a brother and second, we are telling the truth,” she finished, elbowing him. Jason’s house was awesome. When his father died, he had inherited his ranch in Texas. Jason had figured what better place to raise a growing boy than the wide open spaces of Texas. The house was a four bedroom two and a half bath rambler that had been impeccably decorated for a bachelor and his son.

“Jason, your home is lovely,” Sabrina said looking around the house.

“Thanks. Once I get you settled in your room, I will give you the grand tour,” Jason said walking toward the back of the house passed the sunken dining room.

“Ok,” Sabrina said as she followed Jason to the room she would be staying in. Opening the door, Jason walked into the room. “There are towels in the bathroom and plenty of room in the closet for all your stuff,” Jason said as he turned on the lights in the room and the bathroom. The room was decorated in warm orange and brown hues; the sun was beaming through the floor to ceiling picture window and there was a patio set out on the deck that was outside the window.

“Oh my God, Jason, this room is breath taking!” Sabrina said looking around. She could not believe that he had such good taste in interior design.

“Before you say it, no, I did not decorate. It was my mother and two sisters,” Jason said smiling at her.

“I hate when you do that. Can you get out of my head please?” Sabrina said to him laughing.

“HA,” Jason said walking toward her. He put his arms around her giving her a hug. “Sometimes, Brina, I think I know you better than I know myself, then I realize I just know what every woman is going to say.” Jason said looking into her eyes. Smiling, Sabrina wrapped her arms around his waist giving him a bear hug.

“It’s good to see you, Jason. Even if you are an ass.” She looked up at him. “How is your nose?” she asked as they stood there looking into each other eyes. There was all of a sudden a great deal of sexual tension in the room. Sabrina was quickly very aware that she had her arms wrapped around not just her friend but a deliciously sexy man that she trusted implicitly. Clearing her throat, Sabrina stepped back from him
