  She was not religious, but felt certain the world could not run without some design. Her rage, her pain, her fear hung on to what she remembered of the past, and rejected what she did not want of the future. With a controlled will and a small private angel you could do anything, she told herself. So one day, she knew it would happen. One day she knew she would hear a familiar voice in a strange, new face say, “Hello, Lilly,” And she would turn and smile and say, without surprise, speaking directly to his eyes because the eyes were always the same and she would know them instantly, “Ah, love … what took you so long?”
