I staggered and put my hand out to steady myself; suddenly the world was spinning. I felt disorientated in the crowds and suddenly intensely claustrophobic. I stumbled down the street and into a quite side alley, and squatted down, leaning against the cool wall and breathing hard.
As my emotions began to settle I tried to think.
What had just happened?
Why had I reacted like that? I’d felt like I knew him. But I didn’t. I didn’t recognize him. But I knew him. It was the oddest feeling.
I drew my hand through my hair, tucking a lose lock behind my ear. Maybe I’d been overdoing it at work and on this case? I knew that wasn’t true as soon as I thought it. I wiped my eyes, and pulled the St. Christopher from my pocket, and stared at it for a long moment.
Then my phone buzzed again. Swearing under my breath, I stood up and answered it.
“Where the hell have you been, Agent Anderson?”
It was Cooper.
“On my way to the office,” I said numbly. My voice and the world seemed unreal. Unreal and grayer than the world I’d just stepped out of.
“Well, don’t bother. There’s been another incident. A mother and child saved from a hit and run in Pantheon Square. It’s the same guy. I need you over there now.”

About the Author
Until recently Melanie Brooks was an emergency room doctor. She only wrote when she had a spare moment, but she’s recently taken a sabbatical from medicine to devote more of her time to writing.
