by Scott Ridley
It goes without saying that the support of my family was essential as I disappeared for lengthy periods into the eighteenth century. My sons each made their own unique contributions. Evan, a budding historian, assisted with chapter notes; Colin and Trevor offered welcome distractions of baseball; and Graham provided his calm wisdom and advice when computers became balky. My wife, Carole, whose patience is now legendary, kept the light burning through late nights and steady distraction, and for that she has my deepest gratitude. The other members of our family: Mandy Gerry, Tighe, and Maeve; my brother, David; and Hector and Therese Pelletier, were always ready with a good meal and humor when the moment was needed. Absent the presence of these people, my understanding and appreciation of the world would not be sufficient to take on a project like this.
Finally, I want to acknowledge John Kendrick and those voyagers of more than two centuries ago whose story this is. These indivudals and the families they left behind received little recognition and suffered greatly for their sacrifice. To their memory and to those who continue to launch off to far corners of the world never to return home, I dedicate this book.
