“Listen,” Samuel said, “Like I told you before, I would have paid any price a thousand times over to have stopped Carolyn. If my fate is to go to Hell, then I except it.” He smirked. “I pray it’s not my fate. I mean, I’m not stupid. So, maybe you could say a little prayer for me.”

“I will, Samuel.” Anger over the injustice poured through me. “I’m going to say a thousand prayers for you. And don’t you worry, I know people.”

And by people I meant beings on the other side. As a matter of fact, one of my good friends was a demon. I bet if I asked her, she’d make sure Samuel got a fair shake.

“Thank you, Lisa. That means a lot to me.” He stepped into the elevator and turned toward us. “Here’s to the next act.”

As the elevator door slid closed I said, “Break a leg.”

Nate and I eased away as the elevator pulled into a tight blue line, shrunk, and then winked out of sight. Silence blanketed the theater. It was just the two of us now. I lifted my wrist and tapped on my fitness tracker. It was nearly five o’clock and seeing the time suddenly made me all the more tired.

“Well, I guess we’re done here.” Despite the fact that he’d been up nearly twenty-four hours, nearly thrown through the wall, and tossed to the ground by a psychotic ghost, he seemed as fresh as he did when we first arrived at the theater. It was so unfair. “Let’s get our stuff from the break room—” He paused. “—and then I’ll buy you breakfast.”

“Is this a ploy to try and steal my phone?” I smirked. “Because I don’t really have a picture of you.” I was such a pushover, spilling my guts with the least provocation.

“No, that’s not why I asked.” He stepped so far inside my personal zone I had to crane my neck to look at him. His gaze held mine. He reached up and took hold of the edges of my jacket. “I asked because I want to have breakfast with you.”

This felt like a moment—like the kind I’d been hoping for. He’d initiated the closeness, but now I wasn’t sure what to do. Where should I put my hands? Did I slip them inside his pockets or wrap them around his waist? I ended up hooking my fingers onto his belt loops.

“You want to have breakfast with me? No ulterior motives.”

“Oh.” His eyes narrowed. “I definitely have ulterior motives, but for now I’ll settle for breakfast.”

“You don’t mean that Spam in the breakroom, do you?”

“Not unless you’d rather have that.”

“Breakfast at a restaurant is good. I like breakfast.” We were definitely having a moment. My heart raced and I finally gave into the urge to lean into him. “Nate?”

  “Yes, Lisa?”

Were you planning on kissing me?”

A smile tugged at his lips. “Yes, Lisa.”

  “Now?”

In answer, he lowered his head and slanted his mouth over mine. I couldn’t have stopped myself if I’d wanted to. I wound my arms around his neck and pulled him closer, and thankfully the guilt I thought I’d feel over kissing another man never surfaced. Maybe because it was Nate. He was more than just another guy. Or maybe it was the soft way he claimed my mouth, and how his right arm crept its way around my lower back and drew me to him. There were probably a lot of reasons, but at the moment I was having a hard time concentrating on anything but his lips.

We broke off our kiss and eased away from each other, otherwise we probably would have never made it out of the theater. “Okay then.” I picked up my bag, slung it over my shoulder, and then looked at him. “Where should we eat?”

I’d just had one of the most amazing nights of my life. I’d ninja chopped a serial killer with my scythe, helped hundreds of souls cross over, made new friends, and possibly landed myself a boyfriend. Happy Halloween to me.
