“Plantation?” Candy straightened. She wasn’t certain she liked the sound of the word. After all, it had been one of Thelma’s dreams to find a business she excelled at. She had thought her friend had done just that.

“Here’s the thing.” Thelma made her way over to her wife. She was interrupting Kathy and Jessie’s conversation, but she knew they would both understand.

“Making a love connection or providing a safe place to enjoy one’s vacation is a noble endeavor.” Thelma leaned against her wife.

“But it’s short sighted. It’s also about business, more than anything else.” Thelma chanced a glance at her wife. Jessie once again merely nodded.

Normally the vocal of the two, Jessie knew her wife had thought things through a little more than she had, though Jessie had been the one to do the research.

“I realize I always wanted to excel at some kind of business, not because I loved what I was doing. But because it would have made my parents proud.”

Thelma felt the squeeze from her wife. “You see, we’re thinking about opening a school. It would be inclusive. It would be for all backgrounds. At first, we would finance it with the money my parents left me. We would have to do fundraisers and hopefully have donors after a while.”

“By inclusive you mean it would be LGBTQI friendly.” Thelma nodded in answer to Candy’s question. “I think that’s amazing. You can influence so many children, more than if you merely adopted or fostered.”

“I’m still not opposed to eventually attempting to do either.” Thelma once again was the voice for the duo. Jessie was beaming with pride. Or was it something else?

“It’s just this way, we can do so much for those in need.” Thelma began pacing. It was her way of thinking. Being in motion seemed to help.

“We can definitely use Sam and Abby to help with keeping the children of all ages safe.” Thelma’s mind was now rattling at a nearly alarming rate.

Candy watched as her friend was attempting to think of everything that was necessary for opening such a school. “And you’d have an endless source of books to be donated.”

Thelma stopped in her tracks. She couldn’t help the laughter. For the first time in her life, she felt approval. It wasn’t the approval of her wife or friends. It wasn’t even the approval of her parents.

For the very first time, Thelma felt as if she was finally doing what she was meant to do. With the support of Candy, Kathy and her wife, she knew she could do anything. It was all about transitioning. Here’s to the next transition.
