Show the Fire Page 32

by Susan Fanetti

“I love you, too. Just us. Forever.” She draped her arms over his shoulders and kissed him. He held her close and savored the feel of her.

He liked that. Just them. Their love was not for sharing. Their world could have a little part of them, but the rest of them, the heart of them, the heat and fire of them, was for moments like this. Moments alone. Alone with her, he felt invincible.

  This was hope, too.

They rode back just as the sun was fading toward the horizon, leaving fiery trails of light in the sky. The air had taken on the chill of a not-quite-spring evening. Len felt good. It was hard to feel good right after that run, but today, he felt good. Tasha was ahead of him, and he watched her ass as she maneuvered her silly sportbike around the curves and hills. They were both riding too fast for reason but just fast enough for sanity.

He rode up the first of a series of three big hills on the stretch of 68 that ran through a tree farm, big pines on either side. For the rest of his life, he would know this road as Havoc’s road. As he came over the crest at speed, he felt that split-second of weightlessness, his momentum carrying him just enough off the bike to stroke his reflexes. It was a feeling not far from orgasm, deep in his gut. It was the cresting moment of potential meeting the adrenaline surge of risk.

  And that was hope, too.

Note: The words Isaac speaks over Havoc’s casket are not mine. They are a Viking funeral prayer; you can find it in a host of places online.
