Conflict Of Interest Page 14

Our ride was quiet and the air was stiff. It was honestly a little weird before dropping Alyssa off at her apartment. We don't really say much of anything. I am sure he is overwhelmed like I am. We finally make it home and almost run inside. I head over to the kitchen counter to get a much-needed drink like I am so used to doing.

Suddenly I feel his hand on mine, holding the bottle. I look up at him like what the hell is wrong with you? “You are not drinking with my baby inside of you. Did you forget?” I slightly nod my head. “I understand if you have been drinking, but from now on, there’s no more drinking.” He stares hard at me. I let the bottle go, for now. I walk over to the living room, feeling his gaze on my back the whole time.

“So now…” He starts to speak and I interrupt him.

“I think I want an abortion, Evan.”

I can hear him walk toward me. “What did you say?” His tone was deep. I turn around and saw his eyes full of anger. It scared me a little. I had never seen this look before. I have to move away. “Don't move, Natalia.”

“I think this is too fast, too soon.” I lower myself and sit on the couch while he is still standing in front of me. I began to cry and put my hands across my face. He didn't console me or say anything. He was waiting for me to calm down so I did. I look up and I saw his face completely blank.

  “Stand up,” he demands.

I stand slowly and look up at him.

“Is this what you want? You want an abortion?”

“I don’t know what I want anymore, Evan. I am so scared; aren't you?”

“Shhh,” he says, embracing me. He hugs me gently like I was a porcelain doll about to break. “I know you’re scared,” he whispers. “I get it. We both are, but you are going to be the best mother in the world. This baby—” He rubs my belly, “—is the luckiest to have the best parents in his life.” He wipes my tears away with his hands. “Listen to me, Natalia. I could say the decision is yours, but I am not. I have no plans on leaving. We are going to do this together. If you have an abortion behind my back, I would never look back.”

I look at him standing there. “I should have been more careful.”

“It’s too late, so now we move on. This is a shock to me, too, but it’s a good shock.” He reaches over to hold hands and he smiles. I return the smile. “Come to me and give me a kiss.”

I couldn’t help it; I give him a quick kiss.

“Now, I am not going to tell you again. Kiss me better than that. Like I am your man.” He chuckles. “Now.” We kiss passionately like nothing exists in this world. Now the two of us are one.

“Dinner in or out?” he asks after he devours me.

“I’m not in the mood to go out so in will work.”

  “Anything specific you would like?”

“No just grab whatever you’re eating.”

He leaves to get us dinner and I go to take a real hot bath. I need it after this long day. I prepare my hot bath and I dip my feet in first. The water was hot, but I took it like a champ; it felt good instantly. Not skin melting or anything of that sort.

This water feels relaxing; I close my eyes as I lay back against the tub. I feel a little lost in my mind, thinking of the baby, me, and Evan over and over again. How are my parents going to take this? My dad, who spends his whole life preaching to finish school and to marry later in life and to get your career settled first. My mom always said that kids can wait till later after you lived with your partner for a while.

What to do? Keep the baby and slow my life down? Or have an abortion, live life without Evan? Do I have the balls to do such a thing? I curl up in the tub and hold my legs toward my chest with my arms. I fall to the side and sob.

After minutes of blubbering like an idiot, I have exhausted myself. I have to get myself together. I can't be like this. After all, it is my fault for not taking extra precautions. I finish up in the bath, then dry myself and put on comfortable clothes.

My heart started racing and I almost forgot about work. I call my boss quickly to explain my situation. Luckily, she as very understanding saying that she would help in any way possible.

I hear the keys and door opening. “I’m back,” I hear Evan from the other room.

  “Thank goodness because I’m hungry.”

“I hope you like steak and cheese sandwich with fries because that was what I got.” He serves me some on a plate, “Sit down and eat,” he demands. Can he be any sweeter, I say to myself. I dig in this sandwich like I have not eaten in days. It tastes so cheesy and so delicious. I lick my lips after every juicy bite.

I happened to look at Evan and see his face was full of surprise. “What?”

“Nothing, I was enjoying seeing you eat that steak like a wild carnivore. You didn’t even stop to take a breath.”

I laugh. “This is so good; stop looking and eat yours.”

“I will as soon you stop making those noisy sounds after every bite.” He laughs.

We spend the rest of the afternoon together on the sofa watching TV shows cuddled up. We fell asleep on the couch and I wake up in my bed. Well, my alarm woke me up. I look over to Evan to see him still asleep.

I roll over, lean against his back, and reach his ear. “Good morning, baby.”

He replies the same with his deep morning voice. He turns around to face me and my chin rests on the back of my hand on his chest. He stares at me like I am his whole world. He smiles and caresses my hair.

“What are you thinking?” I ask.

He hesitates a little but he finally says, “I want this, I want us, and our baby. I want you. You and the baby have my heart; I want to have yours completely.”

He rolls me over and this time he is on top so fast I let out a scream. “You graduate next week. The baby is not due for another 8 or 9 months. You move in with me in the meantime. You don’t have to work; I want to take care of you. What do you think?”

We look into each other’s eyes intensely. No words are spoken out loud, but they are speaking loudly through our touch. That was the moment I decided to keep Evan’s and my baby.

We both went on about our day and agreeing to spend the night over at his house. Soon to be ours, he keeps saying. That is the least of my worries right now. I have too many other things I need to do and worry about first.

The next afternoon, Alyssa and I went to walk around the park to enjoy the cool, beautiful weather today plus get some exercise in. “I’m sending resumes to every company there is in Manhattan,” she says.

“I will find out if they are hiring for something close in what your degree is in at my job,” I tell her. She studied business marketing so there should be plenty of options for her.

“How are you and the new baby deal?” she asks me, giving me a warm smile.

“Well, I have decided to keep it. Evan is all for it and for us. He wants me to move in and take it from there,” I explain to her everything we spoke about yesterday. “The only problem and big deal is how and when I am going to tell my parents.”

“Oh wow,” she says. “Don't worry; they are pretty good with things like this.” She stops walking and then turns to me. “But I do have an idea. Call them up and ask them out for dinner and take Evan with you to spill the beans. If they try to kill you, well Evan would be there.” She laughs.

I smack her shoulder. “Oh my God, Alyssa.” I shake my head and roll my eyes. She is right in a way. I think I will go to them with Evan. Kill two birds with one stone. The question is when?

We finish our walk and go our separate ways. She went home and I went to mine. I wanted to call my mom when I got home. I take my cell and dial her number. She answers on the first ring.

  “Hey, Natty. How are you?”

“I’m fine, Mom. We are getting ready for your graduation and I want to take you to dinner afterward.”

“I can’t wait,” I answer her. I had to perk up my tone so she didn’t notice something was going on and she would bombard me with an interrogation.

  I couldn't tell her th
at I needed to talk to her then and there. I will wait till another time. I spoke to my dad a little and then we ended our conversation.

My phone rings to a text and I check it; it is from Evan. Automatically, I smile.

Evan: Don't forget you’re spending the night. I am in a rush to see you soon and have you all to myself.

Nat: I want to be in your arms already. That is home to me. See you soon.

That is exactly how he makes me feel. Like the most priceless possession he has.

  Evan’s POV

  Chapter 26

I was in a state of bliss when I heard those words coming out of Natalia’s mouth. I did hear what she said, but I had to ask her to repeat it just to make sure I heard her words correctly. “I am pregnant.”

I wasn't expecting it this early, but I was lost in love when I first met her that protection and condoms slipped out of my mind. I want this girl even more now and I want to have this family. I couldn't be more ready for this. I hope she feels the same way.

I have this sudden urge to want to take her home with me to protect the both of them. I also wanted to share the shocking but great news with my mother. I excuse myself from the room to call the office, but it is my mother that I want to call. So I did just that. She took the news incredibly well. She loved Natalia and her soon to be grandbaby. For the time being, though, I will keep this to myself.

We finally get our go ahead to leave and I take her as fast with me as I can go. She needs to be home and resting.

“I have decided to tell my parents the news after I graduate. I will tell them I have a boyfriend first, and then later I will tell them that I am pregnant.”

Natalia was rambling and rambling while pacing back and forth when I entered my bedroom. I sit on the bed and I watch her intently. She is quite a sight since we have left the hospital and I enjoy just admiring her.

She faces me and I say nothing. I just let her talk until finally she catches her breath. “Say something, Evan.”

“I was waiting for you to stop chatting so much,” I say jokingly.

She looks like she is about to have an anxiety attack. I get up on my feet quickly and walk to her, holding her arms. “You need to relax. It is going to be okay, I promise. I will be right by you every step of the way.”

My words seemed to be working when I see her body relaxing. Then she smiles. I hug her before throwing her on the bed, pinning her underneath me, helpless. You know what happened next!

  ***********************

I’m all ready and dressed to attend my future wife’s graduation. I’m standing in front of her door as we planned to meet her parents first, as they are already inside. She text me an hour ago, confirming that and mentioning that she has already told them about me and are excited to meet me.

The door opens and I am greeted by her dad. He seems a little nervous. Natalia jumps right in, introducing us. “Dad, this is Evan; Evan, this is my dad, Mark Day.”

“How are you doing, sir?” I hold out my hand to shake his hand and he returns it.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Daniels. I’ve heard great things from my daughter about you.” I smile, of course, he has.

“I heard twice as many nice things about you and Mrs. Day.”

  “Call me Mark, I insist.”

I nodded. “I will thank you.”

Hearing the sound of heels joining now is her mom. “Well, who do we have here?” She comes close to me and winks at her daughter. “Oh my, Natalia, you know how to catch them.”

“Evan, Mom; Mom, this is Evan.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Day.”

  “Oh, call me Lori.”

I tried to stop the blush coming up on my face. She gives hugs and kisses me for several seconds, feeling like minutes. I thought she wasn't going to stop. “You two stay here while we finish up here.”

They both finish up while Mr. Day and I are left alone. “I hear that you both have been seeing each other for a while now? So what’s a while?”

“A couple of months or so,” I say confidently.

He nods. “I understand you are an investigator?”

  “Yes, I am.”

  “Impressive.”

“Thank you. I’ve been in the field for a long time.”

I see his demeanor change and he looks to be feeling a little more comfortable. I am assuming he knows I’m not a young guy who wants his daughter for a quick fix. So I am taking more rope and saying what I feel. “I love your daughter, Mr. Day. I know it seems really early in our relationship for me to be saying this, but we are in this for a long time. I am glad I met you and your wife.”

He shakes my hand again, this time being more of an approval. “That was good enough for me.”

I hear heels clicking again and I look over to see Natalia walking out in her cap and gown looking beautiful as always. I smile at her with pride taking over me. She returns the smile. She hands her camera to me so I can take photos before we leave.

“Okay, we are ready to go and Alyssa just text me right now. She’s waiting for us.”

We all leave together in one car. We arrive at the venue a couple minutes early. We all engage in conversation before it was time for Natalia and Alyssa to enter the building for the graduation ceremony.

I look around at everyone. They are all happy, clapping, and interacting with one another. Alex is whistling and clapping for his girl. Natalia’s parents are glowing with pride for their daughter’s accomplishments.

I hope they feel the same way when they know the truth about their soon to be here grandbaby. I look up to find Natalia and she is searching for me through the crowd when our eyes meet. The best feeling in the world is seeing her turn her tassel and throwing her cap it in the air after the ceremony ended. I saw her beautiful face full of happiness and triumph. I just want this night to be over just so I can have her all to myself over and over.

Although Mr. Day insisted for me to join them for dinner, I decide to decline the offer.

“Why are you not joining us?” Natalia asks with a sad look while I hold her in my arms.

“I want you guys to be together in this moment. Once you’re done with your parents, call me and I will come and get you anywhere you are at. How’s that?” I ask, holding her tighter as we both stare at each other.

  She nods and smiles.

“Go and spend time with your family and Alyssa; besides, I have a lot of work to do,” I say. “Have fun; we will have our fun later.” I wink.

Blush creeps up her neck to her face, and then I hold my pointer finger on her lips as I make the “Shhh” sound. Smiling, she nodded her head.

I wanted to get her a surprise gift, so I can give it to her tonight when I see her. I want it to be special and I know exactly what will it be. As I walk to my car, my phone rings. It’s Marissa. “What do you want now?”

I hear her breathing on the other end, “Nice way to answer your phone.”

I laugh. “I’m joking, but what do you want now?”

“Well, I am calling since you have been out of the office lately to update you on work.”

I enter my car and start driving. “I’ve been busy, but I am listening.”

“Well, Evan.” She starts rambling on about some minor cases we are assigned to together. I’m listening but not listening, my mind and attention is on Natalia as I’m driving. Work is the furthest thing from my mind today. I will just say yea every so often so she can believe I am listening to her.

“Oh and our last case of Frederic, well he pled guilty after all this time. He was charged for drug possession, drug trafficking, running an organization involving the drugs and prostitution. I’m pretty sure he is not getting off easy on this one. Last but not least…” She clears her throat.

  “SHIT!” I yell.

  “What's wrong, Evan?”

“I almost didn't make the red light.”

“Stop driving like a maniac. Well, we need to get on with Alyssa’s mother and bring her in to charge her with
conspiracy since she lives here in NYC and it is in our jurisdiction,” she continues.

I didn't hear her last words she was saying, all I heard were car horns blowing. I was rushing home and I was trying to hear her on the phone then that’s when I felt a big hit coming from the right on my passenger’s side, the headlights blinding me, and a rush of a sudden fear. I whipped my neck to view where the hit and noise was coming from and I noticed my car was being dragged down the street. I hear another hit.

I didn’t have time to look, but I instantly felt this excruciating pain on my head as it is slammed against the window, and I feel blood running down my face. I am dizzy instantly. I’m trying to keep from passing out when I hear people yelling, “There's a man in that car.”

I hear an ambulance getting closer and I try to move only to realize I cannot move my body. I can taste blood in my mouth. I can hear people trying to open my car to let me out, but not being able to open the door. I can't help it and I am getting frustrated.

I hope this is not the end of me. Not now. I found my lost piece of the puzzle and this cannot be the ending. This cannot be my death. My Natalia and my baby that is all I can think about right now. This can't be my last chapter in my life. I need to survive this. My mind is turning black and my eyelids are closing on their own. I am trying to fight it and keep my eyes open, but it is getting difficult to do so.

That is when I heard glass shattering. Someone broke my window. I cannot see whom. I feel arms grabbing me from inside the car pulling me out. I see people, cops, and firefighters looking in, blurry, but I see them. My last thoughts were of Natalia and my unborn child. I stopped fighting my eyelids to stay open. I let my conscious go. I felt my lungs fight for the last gulp of air and now I see black.
