Olivia’s Obligation: The Alphabet Mail Order Brides

Chance’s chest vibrated against her cheek when he spoke. “Can’t sleep either?” He turned toward her and pulled the bedcovers tighter around their bodies.
“No. I was thinking about the letter Christopher left. The one Hiram gave us the day I returned home from the hospital.”
Her husband wrapped his arm around her and gave her a tender kiss on the top of her head. “Yeah, I knew that crafty old fox was clever, but even I had no idea what a legal strategist he is. He should be practicing in Washington, setting those politicians on their ear.” His sexy chuckled sent shivers across her body.
“Yes. He could have just given us your brother’s letter the day we arrived. It would have explained a lot to the both of us.” Olivia grinned in the dark and thumbed her new wedding ring with the beautiful, and very impressive, square cut emerald. Chance had given it to her their first night home from the hospital.
Chance gently pulled her closer to his body and she gladly obliged him.
“My brother was more cunning than I ever gave him credit for. It all makes sense now. When Chris found out he was dying, he set about to find a mother for his children and a wife for his brother. That’s when he found you.”
“Yes, he knew you were a good man and needed a woman you could count on. And I needed a man who would keep his promises. It took us some time, and a near death experience, to come to those conclusions, but I’m happy we were able to let go of our stubborn convictions and learn to trust each other.”
“Yeah, Chris wanted me to know what real happiness felt like and to experience the kind of love he shared with Tessa. And now, thanks to my brother’s last act of kindness, I surely do.”
Chance’s hands began to roam over her curves and she could feel his desire for her through her nightgown.
“Chance, you know what Doctor Howard said. I’m not supposed to do anything strenuous for another week,” she teased her husband.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart, I’ll do all the work.”
The next morning, a very contented Olivia rose from her bed before her family. She wanted to write the letters to her friends she had planned to write weeks ago and just never got around to doing it.
She tiptoed down the stairs and down the hall into the office and pulled several sheets of stationary out of the drawer. Pen in hand, she wrote letters to Nellie, Phebe and Quinlan. And then, she penned a heartfelt letter to Madame Wigg.
My dearest Wiggie,
I hope this letter finds you well and all of the rumors I heard about the seriousness of your illness were exaggerated.
The school I promised you I would build here in Creede, Colorado is finished and the children begin their first day of class in their new school next week. What started as an obligation to you has turned into an unexpected blessing for me.
I was very careful to heed your advice to choose a husband wisely, but fate has a wicked sense of humor it seems. The husband I chose willed me to his brother. There’s so much more to the story, but I’ll save that for another time.
I just wanted you to know that I’m married to a wonderful man who calls me sweetheart and I have four beautiful children who call me momma.
Thank you for everything you have done for me and the other misfits under your care all of these years. I will always have an open door for you should you wish to visit me.
With much love and affection,
Olivia Palmer Garrison

ABOUT THIS AUTHOR
Peggy McKenzie was born and raised in Oklahoma. She has been in love with books since as far back as she can remember when her earliest memories are of her summers spent roaming the Ada Public Library. Cool marble floors and polished oak tables transformed the quiet halls into the perfect place to fuel a young girl's imagination.
Fast forward to a few decades later when a move to the romantic southwest of Colorado lit the fire to write once more. Now, she is living her dream in the beautiful mountains surrounded by Ponderosa pines in her home she shares with her husband, Jim, and their two fur babies, Augustus McCray (Gus) and Miki (Mickie).
