“It’s not enough. We’ll get hung out to dry if we run with that. You need more proof.”

“How about this?” She took out her phone, and played him the video that Dawn Chalmers had given her.

“Better, but how do we link that thug to Burke Holdings?”

“Listen to this.” Susan took out the digital recorder that she always carried with her for interviews. “These guys threatened me in the basement.” Susan played the clip of the men who had tried to warn her off the story. “One of the men in the car park was the guy on that video clip. Plus, I have two people who are prepared to go on the record.”

“I don’t know, Susan.” Flynn still looked doubtful.

“This is the kind of story that The Bugle has to run. It’s why I joined the paper, and I think it’s why you joined too. We can’t allow scum like this to ruin the lives of ordinary people in Washbridge. We should run the story, and link to the video and audio clips on our web site.”

  “It could be dangerous.”

“People like Burke won’t sue. They rely on their bully-boy tactics to get what they want. The last thing they need is the glare of publicity. If we run the story it will stop them—at least for a while.”

“I’m not worried about the newspaper being sued, I’m worried about what might happen to you. They’ve already threatened you, and I have to believe these characters are quite capable of violence.”

“That kind of risk comes with the territory. We have to run this, Flynn! We owe it to our readers.”

He took a deep breath, and said nothing for the longest moment.

  “Please, Flynn.” Susan pleaded.

  “Okay. Let’s do it!”
