Tyler kneeled down next to her. “That was pretty good for your first time doing this, but next time, it will be just me.”

Lisa looked up at Tyler and started to say something but was cut off.

“Calm down. I am not saying you have to do anything, but I know you want to. And don’t worry about your indiscretions at work, we will just dock some of your new salary for a few months to make it all even.”

Lisa smiled up at her boss who ran his finger along the side of her face.

“Let’s get you cleaned up and get you home so you can sleep in your nice warm bed. I know you must be tired. Do you think you can come in a little early on Monday?”

Lisa smiled. “Yes, Sir. I will be there early just for you.”

Rachel rubbed her gloved hands as she stepped out of her rented log cabin, then wrapped them around her chest as she took a deep breath, taking in the smell of pines and the fresh, crisp air of the secluded Utah ski resort.

It was as if she was taking a breath for the first time and in a way, it was. She had been officially divorced just two weeks ago, after all, ending a three and a half-year marriage that had started even before she graduated from college.

Rachel had met Drew while doing her hotel internship for her hospitality course. He had been a guest at the prestigious Asian-themed hotel Rachel had been interning at, and during his long stay, had taken a liking to her. She, on the other hand, had been completely taken in by his intelligence and gentlemanly charisma, not to mention his good looks which seemed to belong on the front cover of a fashion magazine, which was why she had agreed to his marriage proposal in the middle of the hotel’s romantically lit Japanese garden just three weeks after their first meeting in spite of all her apprehensions.

At first, everything had gone well, but shortly after Rachel’s graduation, when Rachel had to move to Chicago with her husband, the trouble started. Not only did Rachel not know anyone there, she was also immediately thrust into the role of a business executive’s wife. Still, Rachel had endured – endured all the cocktail parties where all the men talked business and all the other wives had on either hypocritical smiles or scrutinizing glances that would put reality show judges to shame, all the gym and spa appointments she had to keep and the dietary restrictions she had to follow to play her part well, and worst, all the weekends and holidays that she had to spend alone because her husband was so caught up at work in the office or away on a business trip. Rachel had endured them all up until three months ago when learning that her husband was having an affair with a business client. That had served as the last straw and a rude wake up call.

Finally, she was free, free to be herself, to do the things she enjoyed yet never had time for, and to make new discoveries, which was exactly what she had come to the ski resort to do. Feeling the need for a change of scenery and something exciting at the same time, she had booked the finest log cabin at the finest ski resort in Utah and signed up for private skiing lessons. She had gotten herself the best skiing equipment and the most fashionable skiing wardrobe and, too – all paid from her alimony payments, of course.

Right now, she was wearing a thermal long-sleeved shirt and thermal capris to keep her warm under her white nylon ski pants and cream-colored fitted fleece shirt, which, in turn, was concealed under a fuchsia ski jacket with a fur-lined hood. She had on a white beanie hat over a pair of earmuffs, wool-lined gloves and fur-trimmed snow boots, as well. In spite of all that, though, Rachel could not help but still feel a little cold, suddenly wishing that she was staying inside her cabin that morning, sipping hot chocolate in front of the fire instead. She quickly shook off the thought, though. She had come to learn something just for the fun of it for the first time in her life and she would not back down now.

Her spirits back up, she picked up the bag that contained her skiing equipment and started walking down the stone path to the skiing lodge, which she had spotted yesterday. Already, there were plenty of skiers putting on their skis and she could see even more just over the hill, testing the slopes. Seeing some beginners struggling, a tinge of fear crept into her and she suddenly wondered if it was right for her to choose to learn how to ski. She could have chosen something easier or less dangerous, after all, like ballroom dancing or baking.

She was still wondering about that when she felt a tap on her shoulder and she turned around. She almost felt her breath knocked out of her as she found herself face to face with the most beautiful man she had ever seen. He was even more good-looking than Drew, in fact, though she could hardly remember who Drew was or anything else, for that matter, as she stared into his gorgeous blue eyes.

“Are you, by any chance, Rachel Turnstone?” the man asked.

For a moment, Rachel could not answer, too fascinated by how his voice sounded just as handsome as he was, crisp yet warm at the same time, making Rachel wonder if he was a singer or a DJ. When she finally came to her senses, though, she could not find the words to say so she merely nodded while mentally scolding herself for acting like a schoolgirl with a crush on the leader of a band.

Stop drooling and get a grip, Rachel. He’s just a man. You’re 24 and you’re making a fool of yourself.

“So you are Rachel Turnstone?” the man asked again.

This time, Rachel managed more than a nod. “Yes, I’m Rachel Fiel…I mean Rachel Tu…Turnstone,” she said, immediately wanting to slap herself for stammering. “Sorry. I’ve just been divorced so I’m not quite used to using my old last name again yet.”

Good work, Rachel. You just dropped your chances of going out with him by telling him you’re divorced.

The man didn’t seem to mind, though. Instead, he flashed her a smile, which sent her heart pounding by how much more dashing it made him look. “No problem at all. I’m Curtis. Curtis Holden. I’ll be your skiing instructor starting today.”

Fwooot. Rachel could almost hear someone whistling in the back of her mind. She had hit the jackpot this time, alright.

Rachel shook his hand, wishing that it was not concealed under the thick glove he wore but feeling her heart pound even faster, nonetheless. “Nice to meet you, Curtis,” she said, trying to keep her voice even. “I’m Rach…well, you already know what my name is.”

Fuck, Rachel. Get a hold of yourself already.

“Right. Ms. Rachel Turnstone. You still want to learn how to ski, don’t you?”

“Of course,” Rachel answered quickly. How could she not when her private skiing instructor was a Greek god incarnate, only better?

“It’s just that I saw you a while ago, looking at the others. Are you scared?”

The knowledge that Curtis had been watching her nearly made her forget what the question was. “N-no. I mean, maybe a little, since I’ve never tried skiing before, but that’s why I’m here to learn.”

“May I ask why you decided to learn skiing?”

Rachel felt that Curtis could ask her anything and she would give him the answer he wanted. “I just wanted to try something new. I am beginning a new phase in my life, after all.”

And I wouldn’t mind it if I had a new man to start it with, either.

“Of course, you are, and there’s totally nothing wrong with that,” Curtis said. “So, are you ready to put on your skis?”

“Sure, just let me change into my ski boots and put on my…” Rachel stopped as she nearly lost her balance on the bench she was sitting on.

Really, Rachel, how clumsy can you get?

At once, Curtis was at her rescue, his arm around her back. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Rachel said, trying to sound as convincing as possible. “Just so you know, I’m usually not this clumsy.”

“It’s okay,” Curtis said. “Why don’t I help you get your skis on?”

Rachel only nodded, watching as Curtis took off her snow boots and replaced them with the red and black ski boots she had purchased. She m
ight as well allow herself to be pampered even just a little bit since it had been a long time since a man had paid attention to her. Besides, she had paid a hefty fee for the skiing lessons so she was sure it was no trouble for Curtis.

When Curtis had finished strapping her boots on, he helped Rachel to her feet. “How do they feel? Snug enough?”

  “Perfectly fine,” Rachel answered.

“Good. They should be tight enough but not too tight,” Curtis said. “Now, let’s go put on your skis.”

Rachel followed Curtis out into the snow, struggling as she tried to adjust to the feeling of wearing ski boots.

“These boots sure weren’t made for walking,” Rachel remarked, dragging one foot after another.

Curtis chuckled. “Try taking long steps. It should feel better.”

Rachel did as she was told and true enough, she felt slightly better.

They walked until they reached a flat area near the trees which was not crowded. There, Curtis took Rachel’s skis out of the bag and fastened each around her boots. Then, he handed Rachel the poles and put on his own skis.

“You’ve got some good skis there,” Curtis said.

“The saleslady helped me pick them,” Rachel said. “I was told they’re the best.”

“They sure are one of the best,” Curtis agreed. “Let’s put them to good use, shall we?”

  Rachel nodded.

“Let’s try walking on skis, first. Point your skis like this.” Curtis pointed his skis away from each other. “Then take a small step, bending your knees and using the muscles in your legs.”

Rachel nodded. It was, however, easier said than done, and Rachel struggled with the first few tries. On the fourth try, she nearly fell forward, Curtis catching her just in time. It was an awkward position, though, with Curtis’ arms wrapped tightly around Rachel just below her breasts and she immediately felt herself blush.

“Sorry about that,” Rachel mumbled, hoping that her blush would not be too apparent.

“It’s alright. It happens all the time. Let’s try again, shall we?”

Rachel did. She tried again and again while doing her best not to make a fool of herself and finally, she managed to walk around in her skis. As Curtis smiled and applauded her, she nearly jumped for joy. Since she had her skis on, though, she only succeeded in stumbling again, this time backwards. Again, Curtis managed to catch her. If they had been in an awkward position earlier, though, this was even more embarrassing, since Curtis was holding her like he was about to kiss her, his face just mere inches away from hers.

For a moment that seemed like an eternity, they just stayed in that position. Then, Curtis helped her to her feet and stepped back.

  “I-I’m sorry about that…again. I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s alright,” Curtis said. “I think you’re ready to try the bunny hill now so let’s go take the lift.”

Rachel nodded, once more feeling like a fool and almost wishing that the ground would crack open and swallow her up. Quietly, she followed Curtis to the chairlift, where they fell in line and waited for their turn.

When it was finally their turn, Curtis grabbed her hand so that they were standing side-by-side as the chairlift swept them up, then he let go of it. As they sat in silence on the chairlift, Rachel found her eyes drawn to the couple in front of them. They were a couple, alright, their fingers entwined and their mouths meeting for a quick yet sweet kiss. It made Rachel wonder what it would feel like to be kissed by Curtis even though she doubted she had a chance for that now.

“When we reach the top of the bunny hill, you should hold your poles firmly, point your skis forward and go down,” Curtis instructed, breaking into her thoughts. “Then just go ahead and push yourself forward down the slope. If you want to slow down, just…”

Rachel, however, was no longer listening, her eyes on his mouth, following his lips as they moved. Surely, it would do no harm to steal a kiss from him, even just one.

Her thoughts, however, were interrupted, as she saw that they were nearing the top of the hill and she barely had time to brace herself before it was their turn to go down the lift. Remembering what Curtis had said, she pointed her skis forward and jumped down, then pushed herself forward down the slope, bending her knees. All too soon, she found herself going down the slope faster than she expected and was about to try slowing down when she realized she did not know how. She had not been listening properly, after all.

She looked around frantically to see what the other skiers were doing but they were moving too fast and before she knew it, she was falling, her face crashing into the snow. Quickly, she wiped off the snow from her face with the back of her glove and tried to get back on her feet. On her first attempt, though, she winced, pain shooting through her entire left leg.

“Rachel, are you hurt?” Curtis asked, suddenly beside her.

  “I’m sorry, I didn’t…”

“That’s fine,” he cut her off. “What matters is that you’re not hurt. Are you?”

“My left leg hurts a little,” Rachel admitted.

At once, Curtis’ brows furrowed in alarm. “Let me have a look.”

Rachel watched as Curtis rolled up her pants to examine her leg and even she was alarmed when she found it swollen.

“You seem to have sprained your ankle,” Curtis said. “Stay here and don’t move while I call the first aid patrol.”

Rachel obeyed, not having any other choice. When Curtis finished making the phone call, he started placing snow on her ankle to help the swelling go down.

“Does it look bad?” Rachel asked.

“It’s nothing serious that won’t go away in two or three weeks,” Curtis answered and Rachel could tell that he wasn’t lying. “You won’t be able to continue with your skiing lessons, though.”

At that, Rachel’s heart sank and she almost felt like crying. She had been looking forward to spending time with Curtis more than anything, after all, and now, due to her own stupidity, she had lost her chance.

Great job, Rachel. You’ve messed up your chance to spend your skiing vacation with a total hunk.

  Oh, shut up.

  ***

For the next few days, Rachel stayed in her log cabin, her left ankle all wrapped up. She had thought about going back to the house she had bought in San Francisco, but she decided against it, thinking that she might as well get her money’s worth and get her well-deserved relaxation. Walking on crutches, which the resort lent her, she managed to go into town to buy herself some books which she read in bed or in front of the fire. She managed to rent out some movies, as well, including some snow-themed movies like ‘Alaska’ and ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ and even got her hands on some knitting supplies so she could learn how to knit.

Still, that wasn’t sufficient to distract her from thinking of Curtis. Often, she wondered what he was doing or who he was with. Sometimes, she even imagined him naked in front of the fire, the firelight making his skin glow and his muscles more prominent and just the thought of it was enough to make her body burn and writhe with need so that once, she even had to relieve herself, using her fingers to vent her desires while imagining that they were his fingers inside her.

She had never expected to see him again, though, which was why when she received a knock on the door one evening, she grabbed her crutches and went to open it, thinking it was the cleaning lady who had forgotten something or perhaps the doctor on the resort who had checked on her twice already. When she opened the door, however, she was surprised to see Curtis there, and she had to keep herself from gaping as she remembered how good-looking he was, realizing he looked even better when he was just in regular clothes, instead of skiing clothes.

“Hi,” Curtis greeted, the sound of his voice making Rachel’s heart thump just as before. “How are you doing?”

“Not too bad,” Rachel said. “I didn’t know ski instructors were required to see their students even if they’re not having lessons anymore.”

  “N
o, I’m just checking on you since I’ve been wondering how you’ve been doing since the accident,” Curtis said, scratching his nape. “But if I’m bothering you, then I should…”

“Oh, not at all,” Rachel said quickly. “I mean, what’s a woman with a sprained ankle supposed to do, right? I can assure you, it’s nothing fun really. Why don’t you come in?”

To Rachel’s relief, which she tried her best not to show too much, Curtis accepted the invitation, stepping inside the cabin.
