I put on my ear muffs and stepped back as he positioned himself on one knee in front of the barrier. He pressed the button, sending one of the extra-large targets so far out in the field you could barely see it with a naked eye.

He began shooting without much pause, and no hesitation. He seemed confident in his landings, but continued to move in a motion that I found slightly odd. Maybe it wasn’t sighted correctly, although I’d never had a problem before.

Ethan didn’t stand up as he waited for his target paper to return to him. As it got closer, it was obvious his firings were all over the place. I felt bad, feeling that I may have ruined his first day with the gun I’d given him by setting it up wrong.

“Not so good, huh?” I said, shrugging my shoulders.

  “No. It’s perfect,” he said.

“You’re all over the place,” I argued, pointing to his messy target.

“Am I? Look a little closer,” he grinned.

I stared at the paper carefully, even squinting my eyes to figure out his pattern. I finally saw the letters, then what they spelled.

I turned to him, tears of joy in my eyes, and ready to wrap my arms around him when a ring box was pushed toward me.

He remained on his knee, placed the gun beside him, and asked what the target already had, “Will you marry me?”

“Yes!” I exclaimed, leaping into his arms.

My dad always told me there’d be a man that would love everything about me. That hunting, fishing, and my shooting skills would not only snatch up a great man, but the perfect man for me. He was right.

I always told myself he was with me in everything I did. But up until today, it was just something I’d told myself. I knew I hadn’t planned on giving Ethan that gun, but something made me do it. Something told me to polish it, sight it in perfectly, and have it ready for our date at the range. That something was my father, wanting to be a part of my special day somehow. And he was.

I couldn’t have been happier that my dreams had come true, and that my dad was able to send me his blessing; even though not there in body, he was there in spirit.
