George du Maurier, whose novel Peter Ibbetson so excited J. M. Barrie that he called his dog after Peter’s dog and his most famous character after Peter.
Mary Ansell, who gave up a promising career in the theatre to become Barrie’s wife.
J. M. Barrie at the time he started frequenting the Kensington Gardens.
Nanny – Mary Hodgson – at first resisted Barrie’s involvement with the boys and was lampooned for it as Irene in The Little White Bird.
One of Barrie’s earliest photographs of the boys – this is Peter being dried and dressed by Sylvia at Rustington-on-Sea in 1899, the summer before Michael was born.
Michael at Black Lake Cottage, waving his foot for luck as his brothers set off with bow and arrow to shoot his dinner for him.
The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island.
Happy and carefree, they mostly went naked ‘that strange and terrible summer’.
Michael was only two when he, his mother Sylvia and Barrie began taking holidays without Arthur.
In 1904, Arthur moved the family out of London, distancing Michael (foreground) and his brothers from Barrie.
Sylvia and Michael in 1905.
This was Barrie’s favourite shot of Michael at age five.
Michael, suitably costumed by Barrie, playing Romeo to Sylvia’s Juliet at the hotel in Dives, France, wh
ere they holidayed in 1905.
Michael and Barrie in the garden of Black Lake Cottage, in the summer of 1905.
Michael, mascot for Barrie’s famous cricket team, the Allahakbarries, being presented with the match ball.
Michael and Barrie enacted the fantasy until a scene for the play emerged. In 1905 the Black Lake was the mermaid’s lagoon and death by drowning ‘an awfully big adventure’.
Michael in the Peter Pan costume Barrie bought for him.
Barrie playing Captain Hook to Michael’s Peter Pan in 1906.
After the scene at the mermaids’ lagoon, Michael developed an unnatural fear of water.
Michael (in the distance) and his brothers learn to fish on their first holiday to Scotland in 1906.
Sylvia in 1907, grieving the death of Arthur. ‘She had one of the saddest expressions on her face we had ever seen.’
Michael, now with all the gear, fishing the burn near Dhivach Lodge in 1907.
The Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens by Sir George Frampton – after pictures of Michael taken by Barrie: ‘He prefers the Peter [Pan] clothes to a nude child.’
Less than two years after Arthur died, Sylvia collapsed complaining of a terrible pain around her heart.
Scourie, an unspoilt dream of a place on the far north-west coast of Scotland, where in 1911 Michael met Johnny Mackay and caught his first sea trout.
Michael (eleven) and Barrie sitting together on a bench outside Scourie Lodge. Nico standing in front; George and Peter behind.
Michael at twelve. Scourie had replaced something he’d been missing since his mother died and he was enjoying life more than he had for a very long time.
Barrie and Michael pictured before the long journey to the Outer Hebrides in 1912: ‘He wore his fishing basket on his back all the time, so as to be able to begin at once.’
