  ‘But I was going to give you your ring back tonight,’ she told him, ‘and I was going away—’

  ‘Then I can thank Roberta for interfering with your plans!’

  She sighed suddenly.

  ‘Poor Ned! Do you suppose Anthea has any feeling for him at all?’

  ‘Give her time,’ he advised. ‘At the moment she’s a butterfly, spreading her wings, but one day she’ll need to settle somewhere, and then it will probably be Ned. But I wouldn’t worry about either her or Ned, for after all, you were difficult and prickly enough, weren’t you, my darling? And I won in the end!’

  Laurel settled blissfully against him. She couldn’t honestly believe that she had ever been difficult or prickly, but if Stephen said so then she was prepared to accept that it was true, simply and solely because he was Stephen.
