Rise of The Mortokai Page 27

by D G Palmer

Daniel smiled as he imagined Finn finding the key and note. He was looking forward to the next chapter of his life, his formal mage training, and although he had lost a love, he was glad that he had another important friend to share it with.

The forest elves sang a sombre melodic chant around the funeral pyre. Atop lay the still, peaceful body of Trinity Evergreen. The beauty of the elf song took Daniel’s breath away. Then the moment came. The moment he had secretly been dreading; The lighting of the pyre. It was the finality of it he disliked. In his heart he was still hoping that Trinity would wake up from her sleep. He was willing her to.

Gydion was handed a flaming torch, and with it the honour and responsibility of being the first to light the kindling. The Mage, however, passed it to Daniel. He was reluctant at first but for the sake of his feelings for Trinity he faced the distinction with dignity.

Daniel set the torch to the pyre. The flames roared into life and enveloped the lifeless body. He stared into the fierce conflagration. Silently, he sent his last loving goodbye and vowed to become the Mage that she believed he could become.

Burning embers rose into the evening sky, mixed with the ashes of Trinity and rode the wisps of smoke through the air. Daniel watched them briefly in a reflective manner. He brought his attention back to the pyre, but if he could have followed the trail of the ashes and embers, he would have seen them do something very strange.

The matter drifted with purpose towards the Sacred Grove and there it descended to be absorbed by a sapling, which grew bigger and stronger with each passing moment that it consumed.

The new divine tree of the druids would be mightier than any that had come before...as would be the new spirit of nature that was growing within its trunk.
