  [28] ἕκαστος τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐξέθλιψε, καὶ ἕως αἰῶνος οὐκ ἀπειθήσουσι τοῦ ρήματος αὐτοῦ.

  [28] None of them hindereth another, and they shall never disobey his word.

  [29] καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα Κύριος εἰς τὴν γῆν ἐπέβλεψε καὶ ἐνέπλησεν αὐτὴν τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦ·

  [29] After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.

  [30] ψυχὴν παντὸς ζῴου ἐκάλυψε τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς, καὶ εἰς αὐτὴν ἡ ἀποστροφὴ αὐτῶν.

  [30] With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof; and they shall return into it again.

  CHAPTER 17

  ΚΥΡΙΟΣ ἔκτισεν ἐκ γῆς ἄνθρωπον καὶ πάλιν ἀπέστρεψεν αὐτὸν εἰς αὐτήν.

  The Lord created man of the earth, and turned him into it again.

  [2] ἡμέρας ἀριθμοῦ καὶ καιρὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τῶν ἐπ᾿ αὐτῆς.

  [2] He gave them few days, and a short time, and power also over the things therein.

  [3] καθ᾿ ἑαυτοὺς ἐνέδυσεν αὐτοὺς ἰσχὺν καὶ κατ᾿ εἰκόνα αὐτοῦ ἐποίησεν αὐτοὺς

  [3] He endued them with strength by themselves, and made them according to his image,

  [4] καὶ ἔθηκε τὸν φόβον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πάσης σαρκὸς καὶ κατακυριεύειν θηρίων καὶ πετεινῶν.

  [4] And put the fear of man upon all flesh, and gave him dominion over beasts and fowls.

  [5] ἔλαβον χρῆσιν τῶν πέντε τοῦ Κυρίου ἐνεργημάτων, ἕκτον δὲ νοῦν αὐτοῖς ἐδωρήσατο μερίζων καὶ τὸν ἕβδομον λόγον ἑρμηνέα τῶν ἐνεργημάτων αὐτοῦ.

  [5] They received the use of the five operations of the Lord, and in the sixth place he imparted them understanding, and in the seventh speech, an interpreter of the cogitations thereof.

  [6] διαβούλιον καὶ γλῶσσαν καὶ ὀφθαλμούς, ὦτα καὶ καρδίαν ἔδωκε διανοεῖσθαι αὐτοῖς.

  [6] Counsel, and a tongue, and eyes, ears, and a heart, gave he them to understand.

  [7] ἐπιστήμην συνέσεως ἐνέπλησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀγαθὰ καὶ κακὰ ὑπέδειξεν αὐτοῖς.

  [7] Withal he filled them with the knowledge of understanding, and shewed them good and evil.

  [8] ἔθηκε τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς καρδίας αὐτῶν δεῖξαι αὐτοῖς τὸ μεγαλεῖον τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ,

  [8] He set his eye upon their hearts, that he might shew them the greatness of his works.

  [9] καὶ ὄνομα ἁγιασμοῦ αἰνέσουσιν,

  [9] and they shall praise his holy name,

  [10] ἵνα διηγῶνται τὰ μεγαλεῖα τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ.

  [10] that they might declare the greatness of his works.

  [11] προσέθηκεν αὐτοῖς ἐπιστήμην καὶ νόμον ζωῆς ἐκληροδότησεν αὐτοῖς.

  [11] Beside this he gave them knowledge, and the law of life for an heritage.

  [12] διαθήκην αἰῶνος ἔστησε μετ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ ὑπέδειξεν αὐτοῖς.

  [12] He made an everlasting covenant with them, and shewed them his judgments.

  [13] μεγαλεῖον δόξης εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ δόξαν φωνῆς αὐτῶν ἤκουσε τὸ οὖς αὐτῶν.

  [13] Their eyes saw the majesty of his glory, and their ears heard his glorious voice.

  [14] καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· προσέχετε ἀπὸ παντὸς ἀδίκου· καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς ἑκάστῳ περὶ τοῦ πλησίον.

  [14] And he said unto them, Beware of all unrighteousness; and he gave every man commandment concerning his neighbour.

  [15] αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτῶν ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ διαπαντός, οὐ κρυβήσονται ἀπὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ.

  [15] Their ways are ever before him, and shall not be hid from his eyes.

  [17] ἑκάστῳ ἔθνει κατέστησεν ἡγούμενον, καὶ μερὶς Κυρίου ᾿Ισραήλ ἐστιν.

  [17] For in the division of the nations of the whole earth he set a ruler over every people; but Israel is the Lord’s portion:

  [19] ἅπαντα τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ὡς ὁ ἥλιος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐνδελεχεῖς ἐπὶ τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν.

  [19] Therefore all their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.

  [20] οὐκ ἐκρύβησαν αἱ ἀδικίαι αὐτῶν ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτῶν ἔναντι Κυρίου.

  [20] None of their unrighteous deeds are hid from him, but all their sins are before the Lord

  [22] ἐλεημοσύνη ἀνδρὸς ὡς σφραγὶς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, καὶ χάριν ἀνθρώπου ὡς κόρην συντηρήσει.

  [22] The alms of a man is as a signet with him, and he will keep the good deeds of man as the apple of the eye,

  [23] μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξαναστήσεται καὶ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτοῖς καὶ τὸ ἀνταπόδομα αὐτῶν εἰς κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν ἀποδώσει·

  [23] Afterwards he will rise up and reward them, and render their recompence upon their heads.

  [24] πλὴν μετανοοῦσιν ἔδωκεν ἐπάνοδον καὶ παρεκάλεσεν ἐκλείποντας ὑπομονήν.

  [24] But unto them that repent, he granted them return, and comforted those that failed in patience.

  [25] ᾿Επίστρεφε ἐπὶ Κύριον καὶ ἀπόλειπε ἁμαρτίας, δεήθητι κατὰ πρόσωπον καὶ σμίκρυνον πρόσκομμα.

  [25] Return unto the Lord, and forsake thy sins, make thy prayer before his face, and offend less.

  [26] ἐπάναγε ἐπὶ ῞Υψιστον καὶ ἀπόστρεφε ἀπὸ ἀδικίας, καὶ σφόδρα μίσησον βδέλυγμα.

  [26] Turn again to the most High, and turn away from iniquity: and hate thou abomination vehemently.

  [27] ῾Υψίστῳ τίς αἰνέσει ἐν ᾅδου ἀντὶ ζώντων καὶ ζώντων καὶ διδόντων ἀνθομολόγησιν;

  [27] Who shall praise the most High in the grave, instead of them which live and give thanks?

  [28] ἀπὸ νεκροῦ ὡς μηδὲ ὄντος ἀπόλλυται ἐξομολόγησις· ζῶν καὶ ὑγιὴς αἰνέσει τὸν Κύριον.

  [28] Thanksgiving perisheth from the dead, as from one that is not: the living and sound in heart shall praise the Lord.

  [29] ὡς μεγάλη ἡ ἐλεημοσύνη τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ ἐξιλασμὸς τοῖς ἐπιστρέφουσιν ἐπ᾿ αὐτόν.

  [29] How great is the lovingkindness of the Lord, and his compassion unto such as turn back unto him!

  [30] οὐ γὰρ δύναται πάντα εἶναι ἐν ἀνθρώποις, ὅτι οὐκ ἀθάνατος υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου.

  [30] For all things cannot be in men, because the son of man
is not immortal.

  [31] τί φωτεινότερον ἡλίου; καὶ τοῦτο ἐκλείπει· καὶ πονηρὸς ἐνθυμηθήσεται σάρκα καὶ αἷμα.

  [31] What is brighter than the sun? yet the light thereof faileth; and flesh and blood will imagine evil.

  [32] δύναμιν ὕψους οὐρανοῦ αὐτὸς ἐπισκέπτεται, καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι πάντες γῆ καὶ σποδός.

  [32] He vieweth the power of the height of heaven; and all men are but earth and ashes.

  CHAPTER 18

  Ο ΖΩΝ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔκτισε τὰ πάντα κοινῇ·

  He that liveth for ever Hath created all things in common.

  [2] Κύριος μόνος δικαιωθήσεται. καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλος πλὴν αὐτοῦ

  [2] The Lord only is righteous, and there is none other but he,

  [3] οἰακίζων τὸν κόσμον ἐν σπιθαμῇ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντα ὑπακούει τῷ θελήματι αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς γὰρ βασιλεὺς πάντων ἐν κράτει αὐτοῦ, διαστέλλων ἐν αὐτοῖς ἅγια ἀπὸ βεβήλων.

  [3] Who governeth the world with the palm of his hand, and all things obey his will: for he is the King of all, by his power dividing holy things among them from profane.

  [4] οὐθενὶ ἐξεποίησεν ἐξαγγεῖλαι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ· καὶ τίς ἐξιχνιάσει τὰ μεγαλεῖα αὐτοῦ;

  [4] To whom hath he given power to declare his works? and who shall find out his noble acts?

  [5] κράτος μεγαλωσύνης αὐτοῦ τίς ἐξαριθμήσεται; καὶ τίς προσθήσει ἐκδιηγήσασθαι τὰ ἐλέη αὐτοῦ;

  [5] Who shall number the strength of his majesty? and who shall also tell out his mercies?

  [6] οὐκ ἔστιν ἐλαττῶσαι οὐδὲ προσθεῖναι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐξιχνιάσαι τὰ θαυμάσια τοῦ Κυρίου·

  [6] It is impossible to diminish or to increase them, and it is impossible to search out the wonders of the Lord.

  [7] ὅταν συντελέσῃ ἄνθρωπος, τότε ἄρχεται, καὶ ὅταν παύσηται, τότε ἀπορηθήσεται.

  [7] When a man hath done, then he beginneth; and when he leaveth off, then he shall be doubtful.

  [8] τί ἄνθωπος καὶ τί ἡ χρῆσις αὐτοῦ; τί τὸ ἀγαθὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τί τὸ κακὸν αὐτοῦ;

  [8] What is man, and whereto serveth he? what is his good, and what is his evil?

  [9] ἀριθμὸς ἡμερῶν ἀνθρώπου πολλὰ ἔτη ἑκατόν·

  [9] The number of a man’s days at the most are an hundred years.

  [10] ὡς σταγὼν ὕδατος ἀπὸ θαλάσσης καὶ ψῆφος ἄμμου, οὕτως ὀλίγα ἔτη ἐν ἡμέρᾳ αἰῶνος.

  [10] As a drop of water unto the sea, and a grain of sand; so are a few years in a day of eternity.

  [11] διὰ τοῦτο ἐμακροθύμησε Κύριος ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐξέχεεν ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ.

  [11] Therefore is God patient with them, and poureth forth his mercy upon them.

  [12] εἶδε καὶ ἐπέγνω τὴν καταστροφὴν αὐτῶν ὅτι πονηρά· διὰ τοῦτο ἐπλήθυνε τὸν ἐξιλασμὸν αὐτοῦ.

  [12] He saw and perceived their end to be evil; therefore he multiplied his compassion.

  [13] ἔλεος ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ, ἔλεος δὲ Κυρίου ἐπὶ πᾶσαν σάρκα· ἐλέγχων καὶ παιδεύων καὶ διδάσκων καὶ ἐπιστρέφων ὡς ποιμὴν τὸ ποίμνιον αὐτοῦ.

  [13] The mercy of man is toward his neighbour; but the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh: he reproveth, and nurtureth, and teacheth and bringeth again, as a shepherd his flock.

  [14] τοὺς ἐκδεχομένους παιδείαν ἐλεᾷ καὶ τοὺς κατασπεύδοντας ἐπὶ τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ.

  [14] He hath mercy on them that receive discipline, and that diligently seek after his judgments.

  [15] Τέκνον, ἐν ἀγαθοῖς μὴ δῷς μῶμον καὶ ἐν πάσῃ δόσει λύπην λόγων.

  [15] My son, blemish not thy good deeds, neither use uncomfortable words when thou givest any thing.

  [16] οὐχὶ καύσωνα ἀναπαύσει δρόσος; οὕτως κρείσσων λόγος ἢ δόσις.

  [16] Shall not the dew assuage the heat? so is a word better than a gift.

  [17] οὐκ ἰδοὺ λόγος ὑπὲρ δόμα ἀγαθόν; καὶ ἀμφότερα παρὰ ἀνδρὶ κεχαριτωμένῳ.

  [17] Lo, is not a word better than a gift? but both are with a gracious man.

  [18] μωρὸς ἀχαρίστως ὀνειδιεῖ, καὶ δόσις βασκάνου ἐκτήκει ὀφθαλμούς.

  [18] A fool will upbraid churlishly, and a gift of the envious consumeth the eyes.

  [19] πρὶν ἢ λαλῆσαι μάνθανε, καὶ πρὸ ἀρρωστίας θεραπεύου.

  [19] Learn before thou speak, and before illness, take care of yourself.

  [20] πρὸ κρίσεως ἐξέταζε σεαυτόν, καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ ἐπισκοπῆς εὑρήσεις ἐξιλασμόν.

  [20] Before judgment examine thyself, and in the day of visitation thou shalt find mercy.

  [21] πρὶν ἀρρωστῆσαί σε ταπεινώθητι καὶ ἐν καιρῷ ἁμαρτημάτων δεῖξον ἐπιστροφήν.

  [21] Humble thyself before thou be sick, and in the time of sins shew repentance.

  [22] μὴ ἐμποδισθῇς τοῦ ἀποδοῦναι εὐχὴν εὐκαίρως, καὶ μὴ μείνῃς ἕως θανάτου δικαιωθῆναι.

  [22] Let nothing hinder thee to pay thy vow in due time, and defer not until death to be justified.

  [23] πρὶν εὔξασθαι, ἑτοίμασον σεαυτὸν καὶ μὴ γίνου ὡς ἄνθρωπος πειράζων τὸν Κύριον.

  [23] Before thou prayest, prepare thyself; and be not as one that tempteth the Lord.

  [24] μνήσθητι θυμοῦ ἐν ἡμέραις τελευτῆς καὶ καιρὸν ἐκδικήσεως ἐν ἀποστροφῇ προσώπου.

  [24] Think upon the wrath that shall be at the end, and the time of vengeance, when he shall turn away his face.

  [25] μνήσθητι καιρὸν λιμοῦ ἐν καιρῷ πλησμονῆς, πτωχείαν καὶ ἔνδειαν ἐν ἡμέραις πλούτου.

  [25] Be mindful of a time of hunger in a time of plenty, of poverty and want in days of wealth.

  [26] ἀπὸ πρωΐθεν ἕως ἑσπέρας μεταβάλλει καιρός, καὶ πάντα ἐστὶ ταχινὰ ἔναντι Κυρίου.

  [26] From the morning until the evening the time is changed, and all things are soon done before the Lord.

  [27] ἄνθρωπος σοφὸς ἐν παντὶ εὐλαβηθήσεται καὶ ἐν ἡμέραις ἁμαρτιῶν προσέξει ἀπὸ πλημμελείας.

  [27] A wise man will fear in every thing, and in the day of sinning he will beware of offence:

  [28] πᾶς συνετὸς ἔγνω σοφίαν καὶ τῷ εὑρόντι αὐτὴν δώσει ἐξομολόγησιν.

  [28] Every man of understanding knoweth wisdom, and will give praise unto him that found her.

sp; [29] συνετοὶ ἐν λόγοις καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐσοφίσαντο καὶ ἀνώμβρησαν παροιμίας ἀκριβεῖς.

  [29] They that were of understanding in sayings became also wise themselves, and poured forth exquisite parables.

  ΕΓΚΡΑΤΕΙΑ ΨΥΧΗΣ.

  SELF RESTRAINT OF SOUL

  [30] ᾿Οπίσω τῶν ἐπιθυμιῶν σου μὴ πορεύου καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ὀρέξεών σου κωλύου.

  [30] Go not after thy lusts, but refrain thyself from thine appetites.

  [31] ἐὰν χορηγήσῃς τῇ ψυχῇ σου εὐδοκίαν ἐπιθυμίας, ποιήσει σε ἐπίχαρμα τῶν ἐχθρῶν σου.

  [31] If thou givest thy soul the desires that please her, she will make thee a laughingstock to thine enemies.

  [32] μὴ εὐφραίνου ἐπὶ πολλῇ τρυφῇ, μηδὲ προσδεθῇς συμβολῇ αὐτῆς.

  [32] Take not pleasure in much good cheer, neither be tied to the expense thereof.

  [33] μὴ γίνου πτωχὸς συμβολοκοπῶν ἐκ δανεισμοῦ, καὶ οὐδέν σοί ἐστιν ἐν μαρσιπείῳ.

  [33] Do not become poor by feasting out of borrowing, and you have nothing in your pocket.

  CHAPTER 19

  ΕΡΓΑΤΗΣ μέθυσος οὐ πλουτισθήσεται· ὁ ἐξουθενῶν τὰ ὀλίγα κατὰ μικρὸν πεσεῖται.

  A drunken worker will not become rich, and he who despises few things will fall little by little.

  [2] οἶνος καὶ γυναῖκες ἀποστήσουσι συνετούς, καὶ ὁ κολλώμενος πόρναις τολμηρότερος ἔσται·

  [2] Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away: and he that cleaveth to harlots will become impudent.

  [3] σῆτες καὶ σκώληκες κληρονομήσουσιν αὐτόν, καὶ ψυχὴ τολμηρὰ ἐξαρθήσεται.

  [3] Moths and worms shall have him to heritage, and a bold man shall be taken away.

  [4] ῾Ο ταχὺ ἐμπιστεύων κοῦφος καρδίᾳ, καὶ ὁ ἁμαρτάνων εἰς ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ πλημμελήσει.
