“Which is the same age Ronan and Cassius were when they joined Kieran, Athan, and me on their first missions,” he reminded me as he stroked his hand up and down my spine in a soothing gesture.
“I know.” I heaved a deep sigh and tilted my head back to stare into his gorgeous blue eyes. “And I also know that Thana and Selene didn’t handle their baby boys heading off for their first battle against vampires any better than I am now.”
“Fair point,” he conceded with a deep chuckle. “Just keep in mind that your baby boy is an adult male daywalker with immense healing powers, the ability to teleport away from an enemy if needed, and years of training.”
“Being the mom of an immortal creature isn’t as easy as it’s cracked up to be.” I laughed softly and shook my head. “A century and countless missions from now, Atticus will still be my baby boy. Regardless of how many years pass or vampires he’s defeated, I’ll always worry about him.”
“As will I, my angel.” Stephan cupped my cheeks with his palms and brushed a kiss over my mouth, nipping my bottom lip with his fangs. “You and our children filled the empty void my life had become after so many years alone. I would never do anything to risk our happiness.”
He’d spent more time on his own than I had, but he hadn’t been the only one who’d been lonely when we’d met. I’d never known what having a family was like until I’d been claimed by Stephan and welcomed by the Bancrofts. Patting his broad chest, I sniffled again. “I know the work you do for the council is vital and that you wouldn’t take unnecessary chances with yourself or Atticus.”
“Never,” he vowed, sincerity burning in his blue eyes.
I flashed him a watery smile and smoothed the front of his black shirt. “Forgive me. I’m just feeling overly emotional today. It’s such a big step in our son’s life.”
“I wish we lived in a different world. One where we didn’t have to worry about the destruction those leeches wreak on our kind.”
“It’s a small sacrifice for the blessings we enjoy each and every day.” Rising to my toes, I pressed my lips against his before whispering, “Now go kick some vampire butt so you can come home and make it up to me in orgasms.”
