  The portal died, Beverley cried and Evan swallowed hot puke.

  “Your Majesty, the soldiers are dispatching. We’ll have more information when our spokespersons return from Nepal. There’s camera crew and journalists swarming the gates and students are packing,” said Gerard, stepping up to Nath the minute he rose from his throne. He bounced slightly on his heels in something like nervous excitement.

  Evan frowned. A hammering on the door turned his stomach. He leaned over his throne sucking deep breaths, willing himself not to throw up. He needed a moment to collect his thoughts.

  “Your Majesty!” said Will bursting in, face pallid and clutching a newspaper. He thrust it at Nath; animosity appeared to have vanished for those heart-stopping seconds.

  Terror clawed up Evan’s throat, his breath coming in pants.

  Nath’s face was unreadable. He rose from his great throne and the palace blazed with brilliant purple light so intense Evan had to squint. The dawn of a new reign had begun. “This isn’t a declaration of independence, this is a declaration of war.” He turned to Evan, a million stories flashing his eyes. “All projects must rest aside for the moment. You must lead preparations for my coronation. Before we fight for our country, I must be crowned.”
