  She snapped at me when I asked how to light the red candle. Her thin bony finger pointed to the knife next. Swirly Celtic knots were intricately carved into the blade. Firelight glinted off the silver. The stain in the etching looked like it was moving.

  I touched the knife as the clock struck midnight and the room fell into blackness.

  I don’t remember anything until hours later when my dad walked in, dawn light framing his tall figure.

  Blood stained the front of my dress and the knife in my hand. And Madam Zelda was gone.
