“It’s about time,” Jett calls out.
“Oh my God, shut up,” Keanna says. “They finally got together, don’t embarrass them.”
I turn around, eyes wide, and see my friends and Jett’s parents all staring at me. Mrs. Adams presses her lips into a disapproving frown. “Son, leave them alone.” She looks at me and winks. “You made a good choice, Avery.”
I turn back around and bury my face in my hands as I sink down next to Clay, my empty cider mug forgotten about. “That was so embarrassing,” I mutter as Clay wraps his arm around me.
He chuckles. “Get used to it when you’re around these guys.”
“Hey, that’s a compliment,” Mrs. Adams says. She turns to her husband, who nods and holds out his mug.
“Welcome to the family, Avery.”
Epilogue
Jett whispers my name.
I turn to him, not sure if I actually heard my name or not. It’s Christmas Eve, eight in the morning, and Clay and I are saying our goodbyes so we can drive back to Green Leaf before my parents freak out that I’m missing the holidays with them. Jett is staring right at me, so I wasn’t mistaken.
“Get Clay,” he whispers, his eyes darting to the group of people who are gathered in the living room and kitchen. “Meet me on the front porch.”
I nod, and do what he asks.
Clay and I wait on the front porch for a few minutes, wondering what’s going on. Jett slips out the front door, closing it softly behind him. “Hey,” he says, all smiles.
“What’s going on?” Clay asks.
“I need your opinion.” He reaches into his pocket, glances back at the house, and then reveals a teal little box. When he opens the lid, Clay and I both gasp. The diamond ring inside is beyond gorgeous. I didn’t even know rings could be that beautiful, but it’s not an engagement ring. It’s a white gold band with several smaller diamonds on it.
“Whoa,” I say.
“Yes,” Clay says, nodding quickly. “I will marry you, Jett.”
I punch him in the arm and he smirks at me.
“Sorry, Clay, it’s not for you,” Jett says. He’s grinning but also seems nervous. He keeps glancing back at the house like he’s afraid his girlfriend will walk out here and catch him. “I proposed a few months ago, but we haven’t done any planning yet. We don’t even talk about it, really. I think she doesn’t feel like the engagement is real.” He frowns and shakes his head. “I’ve been so busy with work, and it’s like we got engaged and then forgot about it. I hate that. I want to plan the wedding. I want to set a date and make it official.”
“So what is this for?” I ask.
“It’s the wedding band that matches her engagement ring.” Jett bites his bottom lip. “I was thinking I could give it to her and tell her we should start planning the wedding.”
“That’s really sweet,” I say.
“Do you guys think she’ll like it?”
I glance at Clay and he nods. “She’s going to love it.”
Jett inhales a deep breath and then hides the jewelry box back in his pocket. “God, I hope so. I’m so scared.”
“Of what?” Clay says. “You two have the perfect relationship.”
Jett nods quickly. “Yeah …. Yeah, I know. But still… it’s scary. I want everything to be perfect for her.”
“When are you going to do it?” I ask. I’m already excited at the idea of their wedding. She and Jett are such a great couple. It’ll be the wedding of the century.
Jett smiles and his entire face lights up. “Soon.”
