Epilogue
NEW YORK CITY, FEBRUARY 2019
Tanner finished telling Sara the story of May Ling and awaited her reaction. During the telling, they had moved into their bedroom and settled for the night beneath the covers.
Sara was quiet, and Tanner wondered what was going through her mind. After all, he had just confessed to murdering a woman who loved him. Despite the extenuating circumstances that would mitigate the harshness of that act, it was still a shocking thing to learn. More so, given his and Sara’s past relationship as adversaries.
Tanner had expected Sara to react with a display of distress, surprise, and possibly even aloofness. He had not been prepared for how she actually responded, which was to display compassion toward him.
Sara was pressed against Tanner with her head resting on his chest. He felt the wetness of her tears as she stretched her neck up to kiss him on the lips.
“I’m so sorry you had to live through that. I can only imagine how difficult it was for you.”
“You understand that?”
“May Ling had to die, yes. There was no way you could ever trust her again. If you had separated from her, she might have attempted to kill you, Romeo, or Spenser someday.”
“Yes, she had proved her ruthlessness by killing Emma. Emma loved her like a sister and May Ling repaid that love by murdering her in a brutal manner, and at the whim of her father.”
“But you still love her, don’t you?”
Tanner was surprised by the question but answered it truthfully.
“I still love the May Ling I thought she was, yes. Does that bother you?”
“Not at all. I don’t think love ever goes away, particularly when it’s a first love.”
The room grew quiet as they each became lost in thought. The silence ended when Sara asked a question.
“When you were at Giacconi’s funeral parlor, was that the first time you met Joe Pullo?”
“Yeah, and it seems like a long time ago now.”
“And what about your first year as a Tanner, what was that like?”
“That’s a story for another time,” Tanner said, as he reached up and turned out the light.
Sara kissed him while rubbing his chest.
“I’m not tired, are you?”
“Not in the least,” Tanner said, as his hand slipped beneath the nightgown she was wearing.
May Ling was in the past, Sara was the future, and their love was just beginning.
