“Well, it won’t be long now and you can rest for a while. Take a long nap?”

“Oh that sounds so heavenly right now.” Claire laughed.

“Then let’s get this show over with so you can go home and crawl under the covers.”

“Yeah, crawl under the covers with Jack.” Claire smiled.

“Control yourself,” Janet laughed. “There’ll be time for that stuff after the baby. Oops, there’s my cue. See you at the altar.”

Moments later, with the sweet strands of the Wedding March floating to her ear, Claire began her walk down the aisle. As her eyes met Jack’s, she felt a strong pain, grabbed at her abdomen and paused.

She could hear the collective gasp from the onlookers.

The wave of pain passed and she continued her bridal walk.

Reaching the front, she grasped Jack’s hand, and took her place beside him.

  The ceremony began.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we are gathered here today-”

Another strong pain gripped at Claire and she moaned, grabbing at her abdomen.

“Skip that part, Reverend and get on with it,” said Claire

  “You okay?” asked Jack.

“I’m not sure, but I think we need to hurry this a bit.”

“Do you, Claire Marie Jones, take Jack Wakefield, III as your lawfully wedded husband?”

Claire stood silent. Her mouth clenched again as another wave of pain took over her body.

When it subsided, Claire whispered, “I do and, Jack, it’s time.”

“I do, too, and let’s get you to the hospital before it’s too late,” said Jack as he lifted her in his strong arms.

“No time,” said Claire as another pain rolled through her abdomen.

  “Bloody Hell,” said Jack.

Doc Brown got up from his seat at the back of the church and hurried toward Claire.

“Get her in the back room, there, Jack. Preacher you finish the ceremony and my wife has already called for an ambulance.”

“I now pronounce you, man and wife,” Preacher Smith continued. “You may kiss your bride.”

Jack bent down and kissed Claire’s forehead as he carried her through the door to the back room.

“You two can sign the license later,” said Preacher Smith as Doc Brown stepped around him into the back room behind Jack. Mrs. Brown hurried in behind her husband and closed the door.

Forty-five minutes later an ambulance pulled up in front of the church and two EMTs jumped out grabbing equipment as they hurried into the church.

The congregation, none of whom had budged since the whole fiasco began, pointed at the room where the little group had taken Claire.

Moments later the EMTs came back out.

“Doc’s got everything under control in there, folks, so we’re just going to wait here until we need to transport.”

A murmur raced through the crowd.

Another thirty minutes ticked by before a baby’s cry rang out. The crowd cheered. Some stood slapping each other on the back and shaking hands a though they’d all contributed in some way.

A few minutes later, Jack stepped out of the room.

“Bloody Hell,” he said, “it’s a boy-”

The congregation exploded into hand clapping, hooting, and hollering.

Jack raised his hands motioning for them to quiet down.

“And a girl!” he continued as a big smile lit up his face.
