by Mandy M. Roth

The funnel cloud dissipated, and the lightning and thunder stopped.

I continued to hold my friends’ hands. “D-did we do that?”

“Damn straight we did,” said Marcy with attitude. “You don’t come at one of us and live to tell the tale. Not when the backup bitches are close.”

  “Is Dragos dead?” I asked.

“Maybe,” said Marcy. “Maybe not. Time will tell.”

We released one another, and Poppy ran for Brett.

He swept her up and off her feet, kissing her thoroughly.

I found myself being spun around by Jeffrey.

He cupped my face and then ravished my mouth with his. When he was done, he stared at me and brushed something off my cheek that I strongly suspected used to be part of a ghoul. “Legs, I love you, but we really need to work on you running away from danger, not at it.”

“Don’t waste your breath,” said Nonna.

Jeffrey concentrated on me once more. “Maria was right. You are a tornado.”

  My cheeks heated.

“And it is just one more thing I love about you. What about you, Dana? Is there anything you love about me?”

“Yes.” I nodded. There was a lot I loved about him.

“Good.” He chuckled. “Now, about my cannoli stuffing skills.”

“Dana,” said Bram, appearing on the porch.

Jeffrey nudged me slightly. “Legs, give him a chance.”

With a small nod, I headed for the porch. When I got there, Bram reached out to touch me but stopped just shy of making contact. He drew his hand back and sighed. “Are you injured?”

  “No,” I said.

“Good,” he returned. “I’ll go. Dragos is no longer a threat. My men will handle cleanup here.”

The next thing I knew, I was hugging the man. Granted, it was an awkward hug, but a hug all the same.

He wrapped his arms around me, squeezed me tight, and lifted me up off the porch. He then set me down and kissed the top of my head. “I’m sorry for everything. If I had it to do again, I’d change every move I made.”

Nodding, I stepped back from him.

“If you’re willing, I’d like to have a relationship with you,” he said. “I want to be part of your life and that of your children’s lives.”

I scoffed. “I’m not really the nurturing type. I don’t really see crotch…erm…kids in my future.”

Marcy eased up next to me, looping her arm through mine. “Hello, Mr. Dana’s Father. Nice to officially meet you. How about we let her be surprised by the news?”

  “What news?” I asked.

“Nothing, sugar,” she said, wrinkling her nose playfully. “I love you, but you smell like a ghoul—again.”

Bram stared at Marcy with an odd expression on his face. He didn’t blink this time either.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

He cleared his throat, wrenching his gaze from her. “Y-yes.”

“That sounded very convincing,” I said.

“There you are,” said Marcy as Burgess scaled her quickly, taking a seat on her shoulder. She puckered her lips and kissed him. “Good job staying out of harm’s way.”

Bram’s eyes widened. “She just kissed a—”

I shrugged. “You get used to her and him.”

Marcy tipped her head as Burgess made tiny noises. She then glanced at Bram. “You don’t like squirrels? Like father, like daughter. This is going to be very interesting. Bye for now, Mr. Dana’s Father.”

She went to walk past him, but he stepped in her path. For a second, I wondered if he’d grab her and ravish her. From the look on his face, he was considering it.

“Bram,” he said fast. “My name is Bram.”

“I know,” she said, strolling off toward Austin and the others.

Bram glanced at me. “She’s very peculiar.”

  “Yep,” I replied. “She is.”

He stared in the direction she’d gone in.

“Bram, what, exactly was Dragos so mad at you about?” I questioned.

He inhaled sharply. “That is a story for another day.”

Jeffrey eased up behind me and began rubbing my shoulders. “Legs, why don’t you go back to the Proctor House with Brett? You can take your grandmother and her friends there too. This place is a mess right now. I’ll get it cleaned up and come and get you.”

“Mess?” asked Nonna, something off in her voice. “I don’t see a mess.”

Jeffrey and I turned to find the window was back to the way it had been prior to the fighting, as was the door. In fact, nothing was out of order. Not to mention, there were no ghoul bodies in the cabin any longer either. It was as if a battle hadn’t just occurred.

The only signs there had been one was the fact Poppy was wearing ghoul bits. Her eyes were wide as she stood next to Brett, staring at my grandmother and Rita.

Brett was staring at Nonna too, with a shocked expression on his face.

Stratton and the others were there, but he didn’t seem stunned. In fact, he was grinning somewhat.

“W-what in the heck just happened?” asked Jeffrey. “This place was trashed.”

“Hmm, strange. It’s as if magik came into play,” said Nonna, retrieving her clutch and coming toward us. “We’ll be at the bed-and-breakfast across town. Enjoy your night, kids.”

Brett stopped looking stunned and blinked several times. “I’ll head to the Proctor House and check on Travis.”

Poppy tugged at her lower lip. “Rogelio has that covered.”

  “The bird?” asked Jeffrey.

  She nodded.

“Grimm Cove is a very weird town,” I said.

“Totally,” added Jeffrey, taking my hand in his. “But you’re staying in it, right?”

  I nodded.

“Swear it to me,” he pressed.

I winked. “I swear it on Richard Marx.”

  “That’ll work, Legs.”
