He took in a deep breath, and she thought she would die.
“I love your scent.” His voice was deep and ragged like he was trying to hold himself together.
She lifted her head to look at him. His eyes were wide almost blown. He was telling her the truth. The hand that clenched around her heart let go.
“I have to taste you.” He buried his nose in her auburn curls taking another deep breath before his lips lapped over the lips of her pussy.
She stopped trying to act like she wasn’t crazy with need. Words that weren’t more than sounds poured out of her as her pussy rubbed against his face.
“I need to feel your mouth on me. Eat me, suck my clit.” Her head tossed back and forth. Maybe her words weren’t elegant, but he didn’t leave room for thinking.
His finger separated the folds of her pussy stroking up and down. His tongue came out licking up her slit until he found her clit. He lashed at it before drawing it into his mouth. Her fingers clenched in his hair pulling him closer while she thrust her hips against his mouth grinding into him. She was done over the moon and heading for the sun.
“Please Locke.” It was all she could say. She moaned it over again as her body moved restlessly beneath him.
He sucked on her clit while his fingers worked her pussy, first one then another. He pushed in deep withdrew then pushed in again. She screamed while her hips canted upward. She needed him to touch her deeper, suck her harder. Damn, he nipped her just enough to take the pleasure to the next level.
The ball of fire that was growing in the base of her spine went off like fourth of July fireworks spreading pleasure through her body. Her pussy spasmed while wetness flowed from her.
Locke licked it up. He was humming as he drank down her offering.
He wanted to keep her was the thought as he looked at her limp on the bed.
Chapter Seven
She opened her eyes but didn’t move. Locke kept his word last night. He showed her the sun and several planets. Then he drew her into his arms and held her all night. She was cuddled up to him. He was the big spoon, and she was the little one. She wished she could get a picture of this for the lonely nights to come.
This was the first time in her long life; she was only thirty-four, but there were times she felt ancient. This was the first time that she wanted to keep a man in her bed and her life. One-night stands had become her go to. They were easier than trying to explain how she was different from the average woman. In this, she knew she wasn’t alone. There were many women out there that felt different enough that they stopped trying to convince some man that their differences were worth putting up with.
One person, she talked to put it like this. “If the right one comes along, I’ll hold on with both hands and feet. I’m not doing that just so I can say I have a man.” She was in total agreement with that statement, but she never asked her how she would know when he’s the right one.
“Hi, Ava.”
Her lips tilted in a smile as his deep voice greeted her. She couldn’t remember the last time anyone spent the night.
“Hi, Locke.” She sat up holding the cover over her breasts. It seemed kind of silly he had seen it all and spent hours worshipping them.
“You spent the night.” He could have left when she was asleep, but he didn’t.
His hand went to cover hers. “I won’t leave until you ask me to.”
He was tempting her to change her mind and ask him to stay. “Don’t tempt me. I might keep you here forever.”
He didn’t reply, but his green eyes sparkled when she said that.
“Are you hungry?” After eating like royalty last night, she was surprised to realize how hungry she was.
“I am.”
“Let me take a shower. I have an extra toothbrush you can use.”
“Thanks.”
She went into the bathroom and pulled out the toothbrush along with two towels and a washcloth in case he wanted a shower. She had laughed at herself when she bought several extra toothbrushes because maybe. Now she was pleased with herself.
She took a quick shower and then left the bathroom to him. She put on a pair of shorts and a tee before going into the living room. She picked up her phone to find a message from Keva.
It said, well did you do the dirty? She laughed, she couldn’t help herself. Only Keva would call it the dirty and she knew she was going to wheedle all the details out of her. Details that she was planning on living over and over again.
She went to the fridge happy to find that she had meat. Locke and the rest of them had made short work of the protein on their plates last night. She put the rest of the sausage in one pan and the bacon in another. Then she took out the eggs and toast. She took out the orange juice before looking at the juicer. The recipe for a green morning shake was taped on the wall beside it. Somehow, she didn’t think Locke was a green shake type of guy. She’d have to work on him.
He’s not yours Ava. You can’t keep him like he’s your forever man. He didn’t make love to her yet. She argued with herself. They fooled around, he ate her like there was no tomorrow, but there was no penetration. She wanted penetration!
“Bacon and sausage.” She jumped not hearing him come in.
“I have eggs and toast, cheese eggs if you want them.” She placed the bacon on several paper towels to drain while she finished the sausage.
“Regular eggs will be fine.”
“Locke, what do you do for a living?” she asked as she started the eggs.
“I don’t work. Right now, we are investigating the Shadows.”
“Oh, that must be fun. Is that what all of you do?”
“Mira was an exotic dancer, but I think she is going to give it up. Tristan hates her showing her body off.”
“She’s a what?” She almost choked thinking she heard wrong.
“She dances in a club. That’s how Tristan met her. She does this thing with a pole and then she slides down. We are forbidden to watch her dance.”
Mira was not a small female. She worked a pole and danced wearing little to nothing and men came to see her?
“I’ve spent too much damn time in the house.” She placed a plate in front of Locke.
“Then you should get out, show off your wicked curves.”
“You’re serious.”
“Yes.”
“But what will I do?” As much as she hated being psychic it really helped in the stock market. When she was younger, she hung out downtown and learned where to place the money she had to make more money as fast as she could. Now she didn’t need to do that anymore. All she wanted was to lie somewhere that allowed her privacy in her own head. “I can’t do that. My head.”
“Is that what Ven was talking about when he pointed to his head. He tends to be cryptic.”
“I don’t know. I should tell you that I’m psychic. No, I can’t tell you what your thinking. You seem to stop the ability.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t want to interfere with your gift.”
“Sit, please. I want you to interfere. It was driving me crazy and getting worse. The voices were getting louder and harder to escape, even up here in my sanctuary. My meltdown yesterday, I couldn’t take the voices in my head. They were beginning to overwhelm me to the point that what they believed became my own thoughts. I hadn’t realized how bad it was until I spent this time with you.”
“Now?”
“It’s quiet up here.” She placed her hand on the side of her head. “It’s been a while since it’s just been me. I’m not sure if I know who I am anymore.”
Locke’s phone rang making both of them jump. “Hello? Ven, where? I can go check it out. No, I don’t need back up. I think I have that covered. Yeah, I’ll call in when I know what’s happening.”
He hung up the phone and stared at Ava.
“What?”
“Do you want to go with me while I check out an area of Shadow activity?”
“Should you be taking me on your top-secret mission?”
“We took Mira.”
Then it couldn’t be that dangerous. Besides what can a Shadow do, it was daytime.
“I’d like that. Let me change my clothes.” She hurried to the bedroom. It was time to say goodbye and go back to her lonely life, but she was reluctant to watch him walk out her door unless she was with him. She grabbed a pair of jeans a cute shirt with a bold print that flared from the breast down.
“I’m ready. I told them to bring my car around.” They stepped into the elevator.
“I did the dishes.”
“You what?”
“Did the dishes while you were getting dressed.”
“Thanks.” She never thought of a man doing dishes. Yeah, it was sexist, but she couldn’t remember her father ever cleaning a dish. Not even when her mom was sick.
“Thanks, Jim.” He handed her the keys to her car. She handed them to Locke. “Drive, since you know where we are going.”
“To the west side. We have an address today.”
Ava spent the time wondering what kind of Shadows he could be investigating. The sun made Shadows. Was this a game he was playing?
“About these Shadows?” she said as he parked the car.
“They’re deadly. Ven said the tip sounded more like a prank. I don’t expect to find anything, but we can’t afford not to run down every clue we receive.”
He opened her door then led her down the street. “This is where we parked yesterday. I don’t want to pull up in front of the house.”
“Right, because the Shadows are deadly.”
He beamed at her nodding his head in approval.
Ava rolled her eyes and went along with it. “Do you hear that?”
She put her hand out clutching at his arm. “Locke, don’t you hear that?” She was staring in front of her before she crouched down.
“Ava, what do you hear?”
“It’s a low noise almost a hum, but it sounds like it could be words that are being run together or maybe another language. It’s in my head rolling around it. I swear it sounds like it is right in front of us.” She went to stretch out her hand. Locke picked her up and walked backward.
“If it’s a Shadow trap, it’s deadly to humans.” A green light appeared in his hands. He walked closer stretching the light until it formed a film. When he stretched it over the area, she could see a box with something reminding her of feelers on the sides of it.
“What is that?”
“A Shadow trap. You heard it.” There was awe in his voice as he shaped the light in his hand to surround the trap. “We need to get into that house, but not without back up. Let’s get this back to the car. We’ll put it in the trunk for now.”
She shivered and followed him back. This wasn’t a game or an answer he made up from the top of his head to stop her from asking questions.
“These Shadow things, they aren’t the Shadows the sun makes.”
“No, these individuals are beings on this planet. I don’t know if they are the next step in mankind’s evolution or an evolutionary dead end. They could be something entirely different. Whatever they are poses a danger to humans.”
She thought of the voice in the bathroom that assaulted her mind shields. It seemed more sinister now at she knew there was a being not human lurking around the planet.
“Ven, I need back up. Where is Cade he didn’t answer? I’ll wait for him. Cade’s on his way. He didn’t like the thought of me checking this out alone. Knowing Ven Cade’s not coming alone.”
Two cars pulled up. Cade got out of the first one along with Key. Tristan and Mira got out of the second one.
“What happened?” Cade asked them.
“We found another Shadow trap.”
“How did you get free?” Key asked.
“We didn’t spring it. Ava heard it talking. She stopped to investigate the sound. That’s how we found it.”
“Ava, you can hear them?” Mira went to stand by her.
“I heard something.” She went to the car and opened the trunk. “It’s louder now like it’s in distress.”
“Can you make out words?”
“No, it’s more like a hum or when you hear something that’s garbled. Like in a scary movie when the words are twisted together and low and sinister enough to scare everyone. That’s how this sounds.” She leaned closer to the box careful to stay out of the way of the feelers that were reaching for her.
“I don’t know what a Shadow is, but I’m pretty sure the words are twisted on purpose.”
Chapter Eight
“You have to see them to believe them. Or at least see what they have done,” Mira explained as they walked up the street.
“Ava listen to pick up any psychic backlash they left lying around. I doubt they knew humans would be able to hear the traps,” Locke told her. “Mira can see them.”
“I can, but after talking to you Ava, I think what I see is a cluster of emotions. They have weight and color, and that’s what I see when the traps are around.”
“That would be in line with your gift.” The fact that Mira was an empath didn’t bother her. Keva was the one who convinced her there were more people in the world like them. She was the first person who made Ava feel like she wasn’t alone. Knowing Mira would help with that.
There were no traps between them and the house. Locke went to walk up the stairs to the porch. Ava grabbed his arm.
“Everyone let’s take a minute to appreciate the fact that this house reminds me of the Amityville horror. I swear it’s looking at me.”
Mira looked up and shivered. “You have a point, Ava.”
“Is that a movie?” Locke asked.
“It’s based on a true story. Personally, I would destroy every house that looked like this, but no one asked me. The house is creepy, and I swear there is a hum coming from the boards.”
“Tristan and Mira take lead. Locke and Ava take second,” Cade ordered. “Key you and I will go last.”
Ven walked up with a smile that Cade ignored. “He’ll be with us.”
“Aren’t we supposed to fan out, like on the detective shows?” Ava asked.
“We only have two couples that can spot the Shadow traps if we separate you, both could fall into a trap. That would make it much more difficult to get you out,” Cade told her.
“Don’t mind me I’m just along for the ride.” What he said made sense. It was hard because she was still thinking of this as some kind of LARP game. How could it be real?
She followed Tristan and Mira into the house, making sure to stay by Locke’s side. The first floor seemed clear. It was an old creepy house until she walked by the staircase. A low hum of sound pounded into her brain. It sounded like a witch doing a spell or a demon consigning an innocent soul to hell. Her hand went out to clutch at Locke. Her nails digging into his skin.
“Ava?” His voice was quiet, he was asking her what was wrong.
She pointed to the wood staircase. On the side was a wall done in a paper floral pattern that was out of the sixty’s, embedded in the wall was a door. It probably served as a coat closet once upon a time. What she was hearing was coming from there.
Locke pushed her back while he took cautious steps towards the closet. He stopped to look at Tristan and Mira. They both shook their heads they weren’t seeing anything. He reached out to twist the knob and then stepped back. The door swung outward. The gasp that went through the room said it all.
There was a young man around twenty pinned up by his underarms. His eyes were wide, his mouth open on a silent scream.
“Is he dead?” Ava asked.
“No, I’m getting baseline emotions from him. Nothing but fear and a wish for death.”
“We have to get him down.”
“Not yet, Ava, we need to see what is keeping him up,” Locke told her.
“I’ve been working on a tool that will help.” Ven handed each person a small black cylinder ro
ughly the size of a cigarette. “This won’t help you detect a Shadow trap, but when you have one, it will help you see it. He held it up and touched one end of the cylinder that was a dark gray.
The area in front of the male lit up. Ava screamed before she shoved her fist into her mouth. Locke pulled her back.
“What the hell was that?” She was bent over trying not to lose her breakfast.
“That is several of the Shadow boxes in action. It’s draining the young man of his energy. The Shadow’s seem to be attracted to humans with higher than average mental abilities. We have determined that the majority of the population has some type of ability. Most of it is a low level, or they have found a way not to acknowledge what they are experiencing. What do most people call it? Déjà vu? They refuse to acknowledge that they have the ability to see the future.
She nodded. There was definitely some type of flow from the young man to the feelers that were buried deep inside of him.
“How do we help him?”
“Ven and Key are going to figure it out. The rest of us will search the house. Start on the first floor. No one goes up the stairs until we can go together.” Cade waited for them to move.
Together sounded good leaving sounded better. She would have if the face of that boy wasn’t playing over in her mind. The thought of who else may be in here suffering was causing an ulcer to form.
She walked into the kitchen with Locke. The only thing they found were mice scurrying for holes. If there were mice… she shivered not wanting to complete that thought.
“Nothing else down here,” Cade said when they made their way back to the living room. Every eye went to the staircase.
“Mira and I will take point.” Tristan headed up first with Mira following.
Locke waited until they were halfway up before he tugged on Ava’s hand. They followed them up with Cade bringing up the rear.
They found three women in the first bedroom. They must have been here longer than the boy downstairs.
“I’ve got them,” Cade said. He took out the device Ven gave him. It showed that there were several of the Shadow boxes attacking the women. These were different from the one’s downstairs. “I think the three of them are emitting a higher psy energy. That’s why the different Shadow trap. Ven, Key I could use some help.”
