“That makes sense,” Ava nodded her head stopping quickly. This recovery was going to suck.

“Then why didn’t he bleed?” Key asked them.

“He was blasted through his chest parts of his vital organs were missing. The only thing keeping him alive was the Shadow part of him. His body was in a state of shock shutting down to prolong his life. Would you have bled?” Tristan’s voice was droll as he looked around the room like they were a bunch of two-year-olds.

Locke shifted sitting up on the couch.

“Where are you two going?” Tristan demanded as his hand carded through Mira’s hair.

“There’s a hammock with our name on it.”

“Take it easy.” There was no sense yelling at them; Locke had that look in his eyes.

The trip to the backyard seemed to take forever, but Locke got them there with only a minimum of stumbling. Once they were settled in the hammock, a groan left his lips.

“How’s my prince?” Ava forced her eyes open.

“About as well as my princess.” He chuckled softly. “We were quite the pair and your acting sucks.”

  “It does?”

“Where did the tears come from?”

“I pulled them from my past. It’s filled with lots of pain and I thought I should use it for something helpful.”

“Please, Ron,” he raised his voice to imitate her. “For old times sake, if not for me then for you.”

She chuckled. “The thing was I meant it. I wanted him to take a different path to become a different person. All that talking he did about high school, I wanted to see him as a good man who made a mistake. Not one that embraced what he had become.”

“Maybe at one time he was. We don’t know enough about the Shadows or the process to make a judgment call. We do know this the Shadows were once human. They are now bonded with another being. That was something we didn’t know before today.”

“You’re right and that may give us an advantage in the future. I know someone else who is bonded with an alien being.”

  “Oh, who?”

“Who indeed,” she leaned down to kiss him. The feel of his lips turned her on. She wanted to get up and ride him hard. Her head protested when she tried.

  “What are you doing?”

“I want you,” her lower lip came out as she settled into a pout.

“I want you too, but there will be no making love until both of our heads stop trying to roll off and find more grateful bodies.”

She giggled softly, “You know there is this band call the Grateful Dead, I never appreciated that name as much as I do right now.”

  Locke chuckled enjoying her humor.

“We have a lifetime, Locke. You, me, and our family. This is something I never thought I would have. I think I understand the appeal of marriage more than ever. It’s more than two people declaring love for each other in front of their families and friends. It’s a chance to build a future together, to change a small part of the world with their love. That’s what I want to do. I want the whole world to know I love you so much that whatever we face we’ll face it together.”

“We’ll build a future that buries the past and gives everyone in our family a fighting chance.”

Ava snuggled down into Locke’s chest. They were at war, but that didn’t stop them from loving and planning for tomorrow. Soon they would be well, and the war would rise around them again. She was determined to enjoy the time she had with her prince. When all of this was over, she’d prove it wasn’t a fairytale by talking about having children.

  From the desk of…

We’re at the end of the book again. Where did the time go? I don’t know, but I love getting lost in a good story. I hope you love it just as much. Writing Locke and Ava was a revelation I didn’t expect. Locke opened the world of Enigma One to me, showing there was more beneath the surface than I first thought. Kayden and Keva drove that point home, but that’s next month’s book.

I love that moment when someone decides they are going to be true to themselves. Ava had one of those moments when she closed the bedroom door behind Locke. Yep, I was cheering her on.

Then she showed her compassion at the end of the book with the shadow. This is just the second book in the series; there is more fun to come next month when Kayden meets Keva.

I’ve already told you I’m working on a super-secret project. I’m doing it in my “downtime. ” Yeah, I’m laughing myself silly over that one.

Julian will be released in August. I haven’t made up my mind what to release after that.

In personal news, all is quiet on the eastern front. Not much going on here treading water as quickly as I can and sweating. It feels like the ninth circle of hell has come to visit and will never leave.

I almost broke down and looked at pictures of snow. I hate winter as much as I hate summer! Guess I’m not into extreme weather, if only it was a sport I could opt-out of.

Until next month: Peace, love, and happy reading.
