No answer.
Trepidation builds with every step; to the point I can’t bear it any longer. I’m about to stand my ground and demand an answer when his pace slows. He comes to a stop, releases my hand, and fixes me with eyes that look almost soulless. Then, the slightest nod towards a neglected gravestone six feet beyond the path.
I stare up at him, confused, before shifting my gaze to the gravestone he now appears fixated upon.
On first inspection there is nothing remarkable about the simple slab of stone. Age-weathered, and covered with a patchwork of mottled moss and lichen, the engraved words are illegible from my position on the path.
“Look closer,” Clement orders.
I take half-a-dozen steps across the grass and the name of the poor soul inhabiting the grave comes into focus. There is no surname, but confirmation of the date he died — 9th December 1975.
On no level do I understand what I’m looking at. I now know the headstone is etched with a name I’ve become ever so familiar with, but confusion still reigns.
“I … I don’t understand,” I stammer. “Why are you showing me a grave belonging to someone who shares your name?”
“It ain’t someone.”
“Sorry?”
“You wanted the truth — that’s my grave.”
THE END
Before You Go…
I genuinely hope you enjoyed reading Clement’s latest adventure. If you did, and have a few minutes spare, I would be eternally grateful if you could leave a (hopefully positive) review on Amazon. A mention on Facebook or Twitter would be equally appreciated. I know it’s a pain, but it’s the only way us indie authors can compete with the big publishing houses.
