  When she finally announces we’re ready, Kenneth and I stand in between the sticks we’ve stuck into the sand as she ‘marries’ us, which involves a lot of repeating ‘we are gathered here today’ and bits and pieces of traditional wedding vows - plus some that seem to come directly from her head - with her telling us to say ‘I do’ a dozen times, in the middle of half of her sentences.

  It must take ten times as long as vows usually take, but I can’t stop grinning the whole time, giddy and somewhere between bursting into laughter and bursting with happiness. It’s silly and totally ridiculous, but it’s also perfect standing here with Kenneth, the gentle wind curling around us and the sound of the waves in the background, thinking about being married to him.

  Being his wife.

  It’s an intoxicating feeling.

  I had never been one of those girls to dream of their wedding since they were little. Not having a Mom or Dad growing up, I hated the idea of any of it - it just seemed fake and stupid to me - and then when I got older, kind of pointless. I didn’t want to trust anyone like that.

  So I have no idea what kind of wedding I might like with Kenneth.

  But as I stand here like this, getting married by a girl who has just turned five-years-old, I’m not sure I could want anything more than this.

  “Now you kiss!” She announces, startling me.

  Kenneth leans forward, giving me the barest peck on the lips in front of Abbie, but his eyes say so much more, and he mouths ‘later’ at me. Heat flares through me.

  “Okay!” Abbie yells excitedly, jumping up and down. “My turn! I want to get married now!”
