“That is encouraging, but she is not cleared of it yet.” With a bucket and towels at the ready, Saeldur handed them to him as Sparrow groaned louder and thrashed about. The mineral stones clattered as they rained from the bed onto the cavern floor.
“Oh dear God! Help me!” She doubled over and clutched her belly. “The pain is unbearable!”
Thalion tried soothing her and laid his hand on her shoulder. “You’ll be fine, Sparrow. This will all be over soon.” Pained that his efforts at comforting her were woefully inadequate, he asked, “Is there something we can do to relieve her suffering?” Like a lost child, he looked to his friend.
“All that must be done is in her doing.” Saeldur propped her up to sit with extra pillows and placed the pail in her lap. She scrunched her face, jugular bulging in agony, pressed her forearms into her gut and rocked back and forth, whimpering like a wounded pup. She then flung her head over the bucket and retched until all the vile poison gushed out from her. Her sighs echoed into the metal pail before the Spiritswayer took it away and she collapsed on the bed. “Her deed is now done.” He smiled with a sigh of relief.
Curled up on her side, her lashes fluttered as Sparrow fought the lure to sleep. “Not my finest hour,” she mumbled into her pillow.
Thalion dabbed her lips with a soft, damp towel and told her, “Earlier I feared I had less time than that with you in my life.” Cold shivers passed through him when he thought how close he had come to losing her. While gazing into the warmth of her eyes, the drab grey of his own changed to blue-violet.
Saeldur left them for a few moments and returned with a goblet of green-tinted drink. “Here you go,” he said, handing it to Thalion. “This will cleanse her of any residual toxins and restore her strength.” Sparrow propped herself up just enough so he could put the glass to her mouth. The liquid vanished after five swallows, and then her arms gave out from under her.
“Are you well?” he asked, rubbing circles along her back.
“I’m fine, thank you. And thank you, Saeldur.” She flopped down and pulled up a blanket to cover her naked body. “Though I feel I’ve been trampled by a dozen dragons.”
“Speaking of beasts,” Saeldur said, glimpsing the young elf’s crotch. “Lady Sparrow will need complete bed rest of seven days for a full recovery.” With a cheeky grin, he faced Thalion and continued, “So there shan’t be any cunny ticklin’ for leastwise a week, my friend.” As swift as his wit fled his lips, the healer gave the girl a wink and dashed out the chamber door. The two giggled like prankish elflings caught making mischief.
“I never would’ve expected such risqué words to fly from Saeldur’s tongue.” Her face painted pink against the champagne silk pillow, and his heart flew like a fledging from the nest. He loved seeing Sparrow blush again, the life revisiting her cheeks.
“You’d be amazed by the things the Spiritswayer can say,” he said, grinning.
“All I wish to do now is enjoy a nice bath, though I haven’t the energy to get up.”
Thalion kissed her forehead and replied, “You lie here while I draw one for you, my sweet lady.” And before she could utter another word, he ran toward the bathing chamber adjoining their room.
CHAPTER 21
EVENSTARS
The elf swept Sparrow up from the bed and carried her into the grand bathing chamber. The green jade walls were pale and translucent, giving the illusion of infinite space, and surrounded a generous clawfoot tub of ivory stone. Mounted on the wall was an owl’s head of similar stone spouting water from its beak into the bath. The clear cascade echoed a serene metallic drone, and gold flames flickered in silver-winged sconces throughout the room.
“It smells like sweet lavender roses,” she said as Thalion lowered her into the tub. Her body parted the rose petals he had sprinkled over the bathwater only moments before. Sparrow combed her fingers through it and brought her hands to her face to waft the scent. “Oh, how wonderful.”
“I must confess: This fragrance took numerous attempts to perfect.”
“I absolutely love it. Thank you,” she said. The elf smiled in return and dipped a sea sponge into the fragrant water, gliding it over her neck as she sighed. “That feels heavenly.” Sparrow closed her eyes while tilting her head to one side, comforted by the floral aroma and the trickling warmth down her chest. “Mmm. I could get used to this.”
“I’ll make sure you do.”
Thalion lifted her arm and rubbed the sponge over it before attending to the other. Then lifting her leg up from the bath, he lathered it and slid the sponge up between her thighs, setting her sex fluttering under his touch. Her excitement heightened while she watched him bathe her body with such tenderness, like a sculptor admiring his masterpiece as he burnished it with care. Any remnants of uncertainty concerning the depths of his feelings for her washed away that very moment. Thalion saved me. Though I know he blames himself for having to do so, he shouldn’t. Here, his affection was not founded on guilt. No. He truly loves me. While leaning into the edge of the tub, she whispered, “Why don’t you join me?”
“I’m not sure that would be wise,” he replied, lathering her breasts. “You need your rest.” Lilac and lazuli stirred in his eyes.
“I just want to feel you against me.” She lowered her chin on the tub’s rim and looked up at him, pleading and doe-eyed.
The elf paused for a while and regarded her longingly. “Oh, Sparrow, you have me so I can’t refuse you.” Thalion then rose and wished his clothes away. When she reached out to feel his velvety, erect cock, he moaned, rocked his head back, and confessed, “Maybe I shouldn’t. My”—his breath caught in his throat—“My hunger for you hurts so deep.” His stomach muscles twitched and chest broadened under her touch.
“No, please, join me,” she said, pulling her hand away. Through heavy-lidded eyes, he looked at her awhile, nostrils flaring. Thalion stepped behind her into the sudsy water, sat down, and cradled her in his arms and legs. Sparrow felt his cock against the small of her back as he washed her shoulders with soothing swirls. The girl could not deny how the feel of it piqued her arousal, though she realized she was in no condition to give or receive pleasure in that way. Reclining, she circled her arms around his neck while he indulged her breasts with several delicate passes of the sponge. Her nipples peaked under every stroke, and he tipped her over the edge when his warm breath misted her shoulder when he kissed her. Oh dear God! A tingling heat jolted her core. I need to think on something else. “Mmm.” Sparrow resolved to ease the tremor in her thighs. “This fragrance is divine. It reminds me of a perfume I once wore long ago.”
“Yes, I had hoped it would.” The vibrations of his voice tickled her skin.
She turned to him and asked, “What do you mean?”
“Romeo and Juliet. At the Globe Theatre. Your alluring scent had captured my attention when you passed by me.” Thalion continued to caress her breasts before meeting her gaze. “And when I saw your sweet face among the crowd and sensed your gentle soul as you watched the play, I was… hopelessly captivated.”
A vignette of that autumn day came to mind. “I… remember you,” she whispered, slowly recounting the memory. Sparrow had caught him staring at her and was intrigued by him—his silvery blond hair, chiseled cheeks, and full lips. And those eyes. They were vibrant and intense. No man had ever looked at her the way Thalion had. Yet she had not been unnerved by him. The young girl had been guilty of sneaking a peek at him whenever he turned away. “How long have you known?”
“Since our first night making love, when you told me you had gone to see Shakespeare’s play. A fertility rush had overcome me, and I had to leave swiftly so as not to be discovered.” The beam of joy on his face faltered; she sensed his regrets. “But I traveled to your world countless times over the years to find you.”
“You did?” Tears welled up in her cognac eyes.
“Yes, my lady. For many years thereafter, I searched for you. In my heart, I believe I never truly forgot you, Sparrow.” The elf
traced his fingers along her wet cheek. “Until one day it seems I had lost all hope in finding you again, and my memory of you was lost as well. I… I don’t know why. Please forgive me.”
The anguish coloring his eyes pained the girl.
“There’s nothing to forgive you for, Thalion. Perchance fate has allowed our paths to cross once more, knowing we belonged together. Either way, we found our way back to each other, and that’s all that matters.” The bathwater mingled with her tears as she plucked the sponge from his hand to cleanse the dried blood on his chin and neck from the princess’ blade.
Even Medlinya couldn’t subdue us.
Perchance our love can conquer darkness. I pray that it’s so.
What cruelty of the wicked princess had befallen him and for how long she did not know, but Sparrow vowed in her heart to love him so that one day remembrance of it all would fail him. “Amidst all the gloom, our lights shone, unwavering and bright, so we would find one another again.” She gave him a chaste kiss and saw the sober hues of his eyes morphing to lush lilac and lazuli. “You’ll always be my Evenstar, Thalion. As I am yours. Always.”
