We kissed hard and long, then when he drew back his gaze was steady and resolute. “Are you going to take me on?” he asked, his voice low and husky. “Let me slip a ring on your finger?”
“If you’ll let me slip one on yours,” I said as my heart felt set to explode with utter joy. “Equality, and all that.”
“I’m going to tell you that I love you every single day of our lives,” he said, and I knew he was referring to when I’d told him my father had never told my mother that. “You’ll never need to doubt it.”
And as he slipped inside me as the sun went slowly down over the lake, I knew that I never would.
