I build the border dutifully and then we pile some rocks on top of the mound.
“I’m not going back to that commune, Israel.”
Shock and disappointment grip my belly, and he explains. “Communities are founded upon trust. I’ve been on the road too long. I’ve gone through too much now after that heap. I want you to go back to those children. You’ll grow up to be a fine man and you’ve seen more of this world than they have in that little border town. You’ll be able to lead them into tomorrow when the time comes, but I can’t stay with you. I’m too much of this world, too much of the previous world but you all will build another tomorrow.”
“But Olly that’s crazy, you can’t go out raiding alone…...”
He doesn’t let me continue. “I won’t be out raiding Israel. There are people out there who need help. Wives and daughters, other children. I need to try and make a difference.”
I begin to cry and so does Israel.
We spend the night sitting around a fire, reminiscing for a while, then just sitting in silence with our thoughts.

When I awake the next morning, Olly has gone.
I collapse the tent, breathe in deeply and think about all the people we have lost over the years, then I set out for the commune.
I have no recollection of ever being here before, though this is where I was born. I arrive at the gates like our mother had done so many years before.
Macey comes down to the gate and opens it for me. She can’t help but notice that I’m alone.
“Where’s your brother?”
“Let me pass, I will tell you all about it inside.”
Macey smiles, and we walk towards a new future together.
