“Yes. He came up here to see me. We got into an argument and I called him a pig and...now he is one.”
Joey expected Mama to shake her head and say her daughter was nuts, but Mama sighed instead. “I’m sorry, honey. I’ve put this off too long. There’s something I have to tell you.”
“What is it?”
“First, let’s change your friend back.” Mama took the squirming piglet from Joey to set it on the floor. As soon as she did, the piglet grew into a human. But it wasn’t Brad as he had been; this boy was probably three hundred pounds with brown hair in a bowl cut and an upturned nose.
“Hey!” he squealed in a high, nasal voice. “What’d you do to me?”
“I’m teaching you—and Joey—a lesson.”
“I can’t go to LA like this!”
“Oh, you won’t have to worry about college for a while, young man,” Mama said. Brad’s gut pushed out even farther as he shrunk about six inches. Pimples cropped up on his cheeks and glasses thicker than Joey’s appeared on his face. “I’m sure you can play offensive line for the jv middle school team next fall.”
“Middle school? But—”
“Yes, you’re a little young for that,” Mama said and Brad got even shorter. “Keep it up and you’ll be on the table with an apple in your mouth.”
Brad let out a wheeze and then turned to waddle away. Joey stared at Mama, her mouth agape. “What...what did you do to him?”
Mama patted her bare knee. “It’s time you knew the truth, sweetheart: we’re witches. Not the pointy hat kind, but close enough.”
“I’m...I’m a...a witch?”
“That’s right. All the Monroe women who ever lived here were witches. The way my mama told it—and her mama told her and so on—this here used to be Indian land. When the white man came, they killed an Indian woman, a powerful witch doctor. Her spirit stayed in the land. It’s been passed on to every woman who lived here—that includes you.”
“But you...I never saw you...do that,” Joey said, motioning to Brad’s clothes.
“I only use it when I need to. It’s a gift. One you don’t want to abuse too much. I got a might too abusive just a few minutes ago.”
“Is he...is he going to stay that way?”
“Long as I want him to. You want me to change him back?”
Joey shrugged. She grabbed the sheets to cover her shame from her mother. “I don’t know. Maybe he shouldn’t be that ugly and young.”
“Maybe. Men like him deserve some kind of punishment though. Easiest way to punish boys like that is to take away what gives them their power. Without his looks, a boy like that don’t have anything.”
“I...I guess. It just...it seems mean,” Joey said.
Mama smiled at that. “You’re a good girl. Too good for him. You shouldn’t have let him take advantage of you like that.”
“I’m sorry.”
“What’s done is done. I just hope he didn’t knock you up.”
Joey put a hand to her midsection. “Do you know—?”
“I’m a witch, not a fortune teller. We can get one of them tests in a few weeks. Until then, the wondering ought to teach you a good lesson.”
Joey could only nod and look sadly at the floor. “What happened to Brad...could I do that again?”
“Course you can, girl. So long as you stay here. The power only works on our land.”
“Oh.”
Mama patted her knee again. “You’ve used the power before without knowing it. Remember Matilda? When she had that calf the wrong way?”
“Uh-huh.”
“She was dead until you used the power. That was the first time I saw it in you. It usually starts to show up once you start bleeding.”
“Gross, Mama.”
“Sorry, girl, but that’s how it is. It’ll only get stronger as you get older and learn how to use it.”
“I don’t want to learn to use it,” Joey said. “It’s...it’s too much.”
“I know it can be scary, but you can learn to control it.”
“Like you did?”
“I keep it under control most of the time. I ain’t turned you into a pig, have I?”
“Have you?”
Mama chuckled. “You go on and get some rest. We’ll talk about it in the morning.”
“OK, Mama.”
Mama leaned over to kiss Joey on the cheek. “Goodnight, sweetheart. I love you.”
“I love you too, Mama.”
Mama picked up Brad’s clothes to take with her. Then she closed the door behind her. Joey turned over on the bed to stare at the window, the rope ladder still dangling from the open window. Brad would never come up that ladder again; she doubted he would be climbing many ladders for a while.
Despite everything that had happened, Joey found her eyelids turning heavy. She closed her eyes to drift into sleep—
***
Joey heard the rooster crow; with the window open it sounded like the bird were on her nightstand. Couldn’t it let her sleep just a few minutes longer? She was so tired—
“You going to sleep all day, Mr. Custer?”
Mr. Custer? Who was Mr. Custer? Joey opened her eyes and then sat up in bed—and screamed. Her breasts were gone! Her chest was completely flat and she was wearing a man’s suit. In a man’s deeper voice, she asked, “Mama? What’s going on?”
Mama shook her head. “You ain’t out of it yet, huh, Mr. Custer? Guess you really liked living my life.”
“Your life? What are you talking about?”
“It’ll come back to you soon enough, Mr. Custer.”
Joey put a hand to her head. But it wasn’t her head. This head had short hair and stubble on the cheeks and around the mouth. It was a man’s head. She was in a man’s body. But that couldn’t be, could it?
“You did this to me, Mama? Why?”
“I’m teaching you a lesson, Mr. Custer. The only way your kind can understand is if you experience it yourself. So I let you live my life. Walk a mile in my shoes, so to speak.”
“That can’t be. I’m a girl. I’m your daughter—”
“I wish you were, honey, but you’re not. You’re that miserable little man who came round here last night trying to run me off my land.”
“No. I’m not—” Joey put a hand to her head again as it started to throb. She saw through someone else’s eyes as he crept towards the house to pound on the door. Then she saw Mama. The man argued with Mama and then...then he took out a gun! But the gun wouldn’t fire. Mama taunted the man and through his eyes, Joey realized he was getting shorter, becoming a child.
“Oh no,” Joey mumbled. “It’s true. I...I was a man. I wanted your land for a...a resort?”
“That’s right. You tried just about everything to get it. Maybe now you see why I wouldn’t let you have it.”
Joe sagged back against the pillows. Tears came to his eyes. He should be angry at Monroe for tricking him, but he was angrier that she had changed him back. As Joey he had felt loved in a way he never had growing up as a boy. Joey had been poor, shy, and plain, but she had a mother who loved her, which was more than he could say.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m so sorry.”
“Today you’re sorry. I’m not sure how long it’ll last,” Monroe said. “In my experience most people stay who they are all their lives.”
“I’ll call my people. Tell them to leave your land alone. We can put the golf course somewhere else.”
“That’s nice of you, Mr. Custer. Maybe you can get them to turn my lights and water back on too.”
“Yes, of course.” He patted at the pockets of his suit, but his phone wasn’t in there. “Where’s my phone?”
“Here,” Monroe said, holding it out to him. He leaned forward to take it from her. He tapped at the screen, but his fingers felt so big and clumsy that he needed a few tries to get it right. “You want some privacy?”
“No, don’t go. Please? I still feel...weird.”
“You’ll get ove
r it.”
He nodded to her. Before he could say anything, his secretary picked up the phone. She didn’t sound too concerned that he had been gone all night. The security detail was apparently down the road yet, waiting for him. They were probably sleeping on the job.
“We’re not moving on the Monroe property anymore. I want her power, water, sewage, and all that hooked back up. No one is to bother her anymore. Got it?”
“Are you all right, sir? You sound strange.”
“I’m fine. Just do what I told you.”
“If you’re under duress, sir—”
“I’m not under duress, goddamnit!” Joe shouted. The anger made him feel more like his old self. He took a deep breath and then said, “Do what I told you. Have someone from the security team come pick me up. I really don’t feel like driving right now.”
“Yes, sir.”
He ended the call and then dropped the phone into his pocket. “Someone should be here in a few minutes for me. I should go downstairs to wait.”
“That’s fine. You want some help?”
“I think I can manage,” he said, but when he tried to stand up, his body felt so awkward and heavy that he toppled back onto the bed. He put a hand to his head. “Maybe I do need some help.”
“You’re just feeling a little out-of-place right now. It’ll be over in a bit.”
Monroe took his arm to help him up from the bed. He leaned against her the way he had when he’d been a young teenaged Joey. It was strange to think that hadn’t been real. Or it hadn’t been his reality. Those had all been Monroe’s memories that she had somehow put him into. “Ms. Monroe?”
“Yes?”
“Those were really your memories? All that about the chickens and cow and...that boy?”
“Yes. It all happened to me just as you saw it.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?” she asked as they started down the stairs.
“That boy. Brad. He was a jerk.”
“He was.”
“Did he...did he stay the way he was?”
“Oh, he grew up again. The porker is working for some software company in Memphis now. He’s still a virgin. The closest to a date he’s had is with his hand.”
“Jesus.”
“He shouldn’t have crossed me—and especially Mama. You think I was nasty to you, she could be hell-on-wheels when she got riled up.”
“What happened to her? Is she...dead?”
“She died when I was in school. Not even witches can live forever.”
“How did it happen?”
“Coroner said it was an aneurysm. Blood vessel popped and she went down in the barn. Was days before anyone found her and told me.”
“I’m sorry. She...she seemed like a good woman.”
“She surely was.”
They reached the bottom of the stairs without incident. Joe heard the roar of an engine. A car was here to pick him up and take him home. To his miserable, lonely home. “Ms. Monroe?”
“What is it, honey?”
“Could I see you again?”
“Why?”
He shrugged, still in large part feeling like a teenage girl. “We really got off on the wrong foot. I’d like a chance to make amends if I could.”
“Leaving me alone is amends enough.”
“I guess,” he mumbled. He trudged to the door. Before he could open it, she took his arm to spin him around. She kissed him the way he remembered Brad kissing Joey. Like Joey he let it happen, an electric thrill running through him.
When Monroe pulled back, she smiled at him. “Why don’t you come back tonight? I can whip us up something to eat.”
“I’d like that,” he said.
“But why don’t you keep this at home?” she said, handing the gun to him.
“I will.” He nodded to her and then backed out the door. The car he’d driven last night was still in the driveway, a black SUV behind it. A security man opened one of the back doors to let him inside.
“Where to, sir?” the driver asked.
“Take me home,” Joe said. As the SUV backed up, he saw Monroe on the porch, watching him go. He hadn’t gotten what he’d wanted from her, but now he might get something better, something both of them needed. He leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes, letting those memories of hers wash over him again.
