The Secret of Atlantis (Citadel World Book #2) Page 31

by Kir Lukovkin

The only relief was that this was not the possessed.

A strong pair of hands carefully took him by the shoulders, raised him up and supported his back.

“Can you hear me?” a male voice said.

  Rick nodded with difficulty.

The man who asked the question had a strong accent.

  “Can you see me?”

“No,” Rick gasped. “Who are you?”

“We came from the Tower of Peace. I am Doctor Xi Jiang.”

Something pricked Rick's shoulder. He guessed that it was the needle of an injector. An instant later, his head became clear and the fog lifted from his eyes so he could see the face of the man that came to help him. The man was wearing black armor, with a helmet on his head with its visor raised and a red cross in a white circle on his shoulder.

The man's companions looked the same, but they had weapons in their hands and different signs on their shoulder that Rick could not yet make out. He was also surprised by an unusual pungent smell.

“You have blood,” Xi Jiang noticed.

He stretched towards Rick to wipe his face, but Rick drew back because the arm of the doctor suddenly started to undulate like a tentacle and an inhuman green flame burned in his eyes.

Dozens of bright spots shone and faded before his eyes. Rick closed his eyes for a moment, as he felt a pang of sharp, burning pain and when he opened his eyes, the terrible creature was still staring at him and did not look human at all.

That's when Rick started shouting, “Don't come near me! Don't... Don't...”

The pain started to consume him and tear him apart. He wanted to smash his own head so that the brain would leak out. Rick jerked and hit a barrier and tried it again. His conscious mind came back for a moment and he shouted, “Kill me! Please kill me!”

The monsters surrounded him on all sides and mumbled incomprehensibly in a language only they could understand. Rick tried to tear himself away and did it this time, running away without looking where he was going, swinging his fists at the air and growling curses. He was using all his might as he spat out his lungs, he screamed, tearing his vocal chords until something sharp pierced his chest.

The pain suddenly went away, leaving a silent emptiness, where his fading consciousness continued to rage. Rick was no longer able to move and the world constricted into a bright spot. Soon, it also went out, sinking his mind into impenetrable darkness.

Aurora! Maya! I really wanted to come back...
